I thought that part of the allure of the watch was the ability to buy 3rd party bands to personalize it. Apple's not allowing this?

I'm still not sold on the 'OMG I HAVE TO HAVE AN :apple:WATCH, RIGHT NOW!!!'

Maybe when I see it in person?

I have a Pebble, and a Tag-Heuer, and the Pebble isn't the 'earth moving experience' I thought it would be, but someone told me that I didn't give it enough time.

Honestly, I'm trying to do the best I can with what I have. It's a life... :D:cool:

I had a Pebble Steel for about a month, sold it on eBay. Got a FitBit Surge a few weeks ago, I'm bored with it too. Currently I work a shift-work position and for 7 days of the month I work overnights. I wanted to track my sleeping, guess what? I don't sleep even 1/2 what I normally do when on overnights. I already knew that though, lol. How does this data tracking help anyone? Seems like useless data. I don't get the point of the apple watch, I will probably skip it for now, but part of me goes back and forth. I really wish I had purchased and never opened a first gen iPhone, the one I did purchase I used. I might buy an apple watch and never open it.

I'm sure there will be the equivalent to MFI at some point.

It seems almost none of the posters here bothered to read the article before making judgements on "cheapness"

It a prototype. Not the actual band.

Dude you are on this site and you've had two smart watch braclet things in less than half a year. Don't kid yourself, you are buying this watch. ;)

Guys, I'm sure that the white plastic is just a very rough representation of the attachment mechanism.

Shame on them for establishing such a lame first impression. Really now, that's Elementary Marketing 101. The way to do it would have been to hog out a reasonable facsimile of the Apple Watch and make this accessory look worthy.

Functional straps

They said in the keynote that in order to use ApplePay with the watch you must authenticate it somehow with the strap. There is probably some sort of a circuit in the strap that verifies this. The steel circle that rests under the latch on all the straps they have shown probably has some functionality too- its probably not cosmetic.

That would be both stupid and outrageous, if they prevented 3rd party straps, or gone after to shut down 3rd party strap efforts.

It's a flippin strap. Let people put on whatever they like, however hideous.

Like cases for phones.

I honestly expected someone to announce this the day after Apple revealed the watch. It's a no brainer, just decided by who can reach the market first. Unfortunately it wont be a kickstarter campaign with some rough 3D printed prototypes.

Very good idea though.

They stopped 3rd party magsafe connectors. Why not watch bands?
You can't tell the difference between an electronic accessory and a mechanical one? Which do you think is harder to copy? What protections can Apple possibly put on a piece of metal or elastomer strap?

A product like this will eventually be released, but hopefully companies will be smart enough not to promote it until it is ready for purchase. I'm sure Apple will be all over this kickstarter project now that MacRumors has brought attention to it.

It's funny how Apple is promoting the personalization of the Apple Watch, but once the watches hit the market, I bet everyone will be wearing the same popular straps: Milanese loop, link bracelet, blue leather loop, and classic buckle. Not much room for individuality. I'm sure I'm not the only person who would love to use a nice alligator or crocodile leather strap.

Apple can block 3rd party MagSafe if they patented that design, same goes for this watch band, is that is a patented new design than they can block it.
Also looking at the classic band........it looks like apple already has this covered. Looks like it uses standard watch bands, pins and all.

Personally I think it would be smart to let other designers in. I know a lot of people who go with the iphone simply because it has more case options, especially from fashion brands.
It would be rad to be able to rock a MJ or Kenzo band on the Apple Watch.

Why should Apple allow any third party designers at all. Most have leaked new Apple products. You don't see BMW allowing third party designers on their cars and nor they should.

That's probably how it'll be done. But even that will be cloned by the Chinese within months. I don't see any way Apple could stop the sale of third party accessories for the watch.

a magsafe connector is a proprietary tech. a watch band is just a watch band. there isn't a thing in the world Apple can do to stop third party bands just like they can't control third party iphone cases.

Actually, I would not be surprised, if the connection between the watch and band may be more than just mechanical. I expect some sort of "authentication" that a watch is properly attached to a "certified/official" band.
Apple could have done something like that but they didn't. that's absolutely clear from the pictures of the bands on the Apple website. there is certainly nothing hidden inside the leather ones.

They've said absolutely no such thing. what they did say (not in the keynote btw) is that Apple Watch will use uninterrupted skin contact with the back of the watch to validate ApplePay purchases after an initial PIN authentication. but none of this involves anything built into the straps. they will be just that - straps.

"Click takes advantage .......Click allows customers to truly personalize the Apple Watch to match their style and at a fraction of the cost of Apple's Watchbands."

Ummmm? Trully customize?????
. Apple has already covered that by allowing for million plus combinations!

At a fraction of apples cost???
The pricing of apple bands is not out yet... What fraction are the talking about ?

Sure. Because I'm so going to crappy up my fancy new looking :apple:WATCH with some cheap looking plastic and generic bands.

No they didn't, it's by the heart beat sensor.

No, that bit is in the back of the watch. it would be very difficult to put any sensors into a steel band and have that send information to the watch.
