I've concluded 2 things: those of you losing their minds at the "ugliness" have either 1) never worn a watch in your life and/or replaced the strap/bracelet. 2) don't know how to read and failed to see this is only a 3D printed PROTOTYPE...

Heads up, there's an adapter out there from a from GShock that works perfectly already. $12 comes in a bunch of colors.

My bad! I mearly quoted Johny Ive.... But then your question made me look into it a bit more... I found this article !

http://www.idownloadblog.com/2014/0...ections-6-finishes-18-bands-2-sizes-11-faces/.

6 finishes ( 2 in each catagory)

18 bands

11 faces

So given the above the practical combinations would be :

Each finish can have 18 different bands.. That's 6x18 =108
Each of 108 can have 11 different faces.. 108 x 11= 1188

Reapeat the same for the smaller size

So its close to couple thousend combos !

Formula for combination N!/( n!( N-n)!)
Formula fir permutation N!/(N-n)!
N os number of dustinct objects
And n is the number objects in our combination set ! In thus case 3.. Watch body, strap, face

I think Johny is mistakingly talking about all possible combination out of the above set of 35 for every n .... Including combinations that are the same parts but different colors Or material.. Like gold , stainelss and alum watch body as a combination Which is meaningless in actual application ! Or even incomplete combinations of 2 pieces or combinations with 4 pieces or more... Which again are meaningless ....

Thoughs welcome

I think Ivy was also including the digital watch face. The iOS will presumably ship with dozens of different faces that you can set it at. So that adds a fourth factor and increases the number of combinations significantly. Also, I suspect that there are more bands to come. One has to figure that there will be a metal band (possibly gold or gold plated) for the Edition.

Finally, is there going to be a storage size option? Could the watch come in 8gb version and 16 gb version? Apple has made a lot of money charging for that upgrade on their devices.

Storage size!!! Never came to my mind .... Good point ! :)

As far as faces i have included that in the calculations.. 11 faces... But im sure down the line there will be a lot more !

Ah I see what you meant by faces.

Hmm, it seems like more combos would be available. But a few more bands and a few more faces and the possibilities really start increasing quickly.

Agree. Words that sprung to mind.

Yuk cheap tacky

Lol, imagine running for the tube or metro, and next thing you know - your watch has fallen between the gap - boy would I be pissed!

No thanks, perfectly happy with the stock bands. May go for a the sports edition with the blue sport band - it would be nice if they did the bright orange they did for the ipad cases.
Alternatively, the all space grey stainless steel version is a close second.

From the presentation video of the watch, it looks like the bands lock in place with some kind of slide and click mechanism that's supposed to be easy to operate, and I'm willing to bet they patented it. I don't know how any third party could release their own band adaptors without retro-engineering one from apple, which is impossible without owning the actual watch !
Now, if they patented it like I think they did, they could sue any manufacturer who tries to copy it I suppose, which won't keep the Chinese from doing it anyway, but would make it harder for any US or Europe based manufacturer.

About that kickstarter thing though, prototype or not they could have done way better, heck even I can do better then some squarish design that looks like it was printed on a cheap consumer 3D printer. But the idea is honorable, and can't blame them for trying.

I like the prototype, and I commend them for coming out with a physical sample so quickly.

I wonder, however; if Apple really thinks that going to go all "Keurig 2.0" on small 3rd party makers everywhere will benefit Apple more than it will hurt.

Will be interesting to see how this develops.
