Honestly, the media costs are substantially more than for single layer, so unless you're doing something very specifically requiring that much space per disk, there's probably not a big need for it on a laptop.

Well you can come to find how much you need it when you have an 8gb video file you need to backup. Or an 8gb HD image from Virtual PC. I find I need way more. I need blu-ray NOW.

DVD-DL+R Media is about $1.50 while DVD-R media is about 21¢

Don't we all? I'd even rather have DVD-HD.

DVD-DL+R Media is about $1.50 while DVD-R media is about 21¢. Toast 7 lets you span large files across multiple DVDs. But I think the way to look at this is that the price of DL media is likely to drop radically in the next 12 months as DVD-HD (VHS) and to a lessor extent Blu-Ray (Beta) moves into that much more expensive space.

You do understand that DVD-HD will be the winner right? Industry analysts believe that DVD-HD will occupy 67% of the high density DVD market by the end of 2007. Blu-Ray will be the losing format. Why? Simple economics. DVD-HD is about 50% Cheaper on all fronts.

When is Apple going to have docking stations again? What a mess of cables....
That's three cables plus a lock. Add a docking station and you have... three cables plus a lock and a docking station :D

If the harddisk isn't turned off then a 7200 RPM harddisk spins exactly as long as a 5400 RPM harddisk: All the time. If it is turned off, then you spend a lot of energy to accelerate the harddisk to its speed. Energy is proportional to speed squared; so one third more speed means 77.77 percent more rotational energy.

Smaller capacity drives may have fewer platters, though, reducing the mass that has to be accelerated :)

Who said anything about anyone needing a GB Router?? My 5 Port Gigabit SWITCH cost $21 - You don't need a GB Router. You just plug a port from any cheap GB Switch to a regular Internet router and you have the best of both worlds cheap. :D

Where'd you get the cheap switch? You might could talk me into that. I paid $13 for my 6 foot FW400 cable :) Of course, I'd still need a way to put gigabit ether on my PPC Mini... :)

Thanks Multimedia.

i was going to leave the 1GB stick in from apple and wait for 2gb modules. but when i saw that 2 1GB sticks would cost $140 and downgrading ram in my arder from aplpe would get me $100 off, i called and changed my order with apple.

heh, now i can really wait for 2GB modules to come down in price.

I'm curious, where do you find that the 17" was too big to go? I carry my 17" with me every single day and I don't ever feel bothered by its size. I'm a musician so maybe its just smaller than everything else I carry so I don't really think about it.

yeah, i bought a backpack with mine.

but i think a lot of the complaints come from having to walk a LOT with the bag and something else. but i have encountered that with books and music gear (if only amps were light), so i don't think my lovely lovely computer will be too much to bear.

Yes they do - perfectly.NOT!Exactly neutrino23.Sorry matticus008, you win the Bonehead Post Of The Day Award. All FW peripherals may be plugged into ANY FW port NO MATTER WHAT its speed and work. FW800 stuff plugs into FW400 ports with adaptors or FW400 to FW800 cables and VICE VERSA.
Adapters and special cables, yes. But why replace the port that everyone uses when there's no need to change anything? Not that many people use FW800, and those who do have plenty of options for doing so. The Bonehead Decision of the Year goes to the Firewire team for creating an entirely new connector for FW800. You shouldn't force customers to buy an adapter or a new cable for no particular reason. Even if it's a $3 part--you want people who buy a Firewire device to be able to take it home and plug it in without any trouble.

It takes a really special kind of person to inconvenience 9 people out of 10 for a FW adapter, especially when you could also easily just daisy chain your FW800 devices on the provided FW800 port and not have to mess with half-speed operation. That's like putting a TOSLink optical port on the side and saying, "just remember to take this tiny adapter everywhere you go when you want to use normal speakers or headphones! We decided to irritate everyone just to make it easier for a few people to go overboard!" But great suggestion, all the same.

On the plane. In the car. Space on my desk next to my 24" display. And just the general moving from place to place all day long. I do warrantee work on....*chokes on the words* Dells. I move around A LOT. (And get the satisfaction of my working Mac sitting next to a disassembled Dell.) 17" isn't A lot more. Just enough IMHO to make it a pain to take it around town a lot.

Downgrade Apple RAM Order To Get Both Lifetime Upgradeable Sticks From Omni Cheaper

Gee I didn't even think of that. The beauty of ordering from Omni is that you can UPGRADE to 2GB sticks for the life of your RAM from them for only the difference between the cost of them. So buying from Omni is like renting 1 GB sticks until 2 GB sticks are more affordable and then just paying the difference. It is really an amazing policy they have that way. :D

Thanks for the tip about downgrading the Apple RAM to save $100. That means 2GB (two 1GB sticks) of Lifetime UPGRADABLE RAM from Omni cost a total of +$46. Brilliant!

That falls under the category of those "specific things" I mentioned, now, doesn't it?

4$ grand and then some

yep - same here. and the $4599 au price tag is not that appealing...

aussie_geek

Today, I checked out the Candian site and I reckon that the CDN and Aussy Dollar have often been very close, but completely decked out with the Apple care (no screen of course) is still only 4$ thousand flat. It is a big bit of carion, but well within what I would lay down next year or the year after for a new computer... with a bit of guilt. cheers:cool:

Anyone know if the ram from Crucial for the 15" works for the 17" Is it the same stuff? Because Crucial is MUCH cheaper.

Not sure if anyone responded to you, but everything I read is that the Crucial RAM does NOT like the MacBooks, and apparently even Crucial admitted that it hasn't been tested for them yet.

That's why I went with Mushkin, and haven't had a single hiccup.

Fry's all the time everyday price. :D

Ick. Verbatim 6x DLs run about $2 each when I catch a sale. My Plextor likes those better than the Memorexes, so I don't even bother with an offbrand, where I have no assurance of dye quality, etc.

Most of my backups and archives are done on $100 Seagate 300GB drives, however. Sometimes across FW400 :) They do my heavy lifting. And now they seem to be even cheaper than what I paid. Yes, 33 cents per gig is a lot more than the 23.5 cents per gig of the DLs, but hard drives are generally rewriteable and feed me data faster :)

Talk to me about cheap FW800 cases, though. Do they have fans?

Order Two 512 Sticks From Apple, Save $100, Then Send Omni $146 for Two 1GB Sticks

Omni Technologies' OPTIVAL CAS 3 via Ramseeker is the only way to go. Omni will let you upgrade your sticks from 1GB to 2GB each for only the difference in price for the life of your RAM. Two 1GB sticks are only $146. Discount your order to TWO 512 sticks, save $100 then order two sticks from Omni via ramseeker for $146. You are out a total of $46 for a total of 2 GB of lifetime upgradable ram until you can graduate to 4GB when the price gets right. :D

I was wondering why you kept mentioning them instead of someone I'd recognize from the PC side of things, like Crucial or Mushkin. But that does sound like an awesome offer. I'd have upgraded the Mushkins on my server several times by now, if they had this deal :) I assume Omni Tech also has lifetime ship-ahead replacement on defective parts? If so, they might be my new vendor.

I buy my 300 GB HDs for $70 at Fry's. No fans in those FW800 cases. Comp USA has them for even less than $50 from time to time. :)

Whoops, sorry, my last couple of posts were somewhat off-topic. So if you want to message me directly instead, with responses, that would be fine.

Seagates? wow. I feel really let down by the Fry's here in Dallas, then.
What brand are the CompUSA cases under $50? I bought two of their store branded USB2 cases last fall, and despite what the stickers said, they wouldn't support 300s. So I went with Adaptec's ACS-200s or whatever it is that does both USB2 and FW400. But I never use the USB side. These get pretty hot without fans, though. I just got a miniStack v2 a couple weeks ago, for my Mini, obviously, and it has a fan that blows constantly, but I really like it, because the drive is cool very quickly after I power down to swap drives :) So that's why I think my next external cases should be FW only, but have fans. And not be CompUSA's. :)

True. Thought I'd ask here first, though, because you're up, but I doubt they are :)
