A VERY QUICK thumbnail from the Aussie sites ...

Mac 17" base 4599 + applecare 579 + modem 79 + 2GB 460 = 5717

Dell M1710 (256 MB graphics model) base 4397 + premium service 412 + help desk 169 + 100GBx7200 disk 91 + bluetooth 23 + 2GB 229 = 5721

Mac misses out on hi-res screen, 3 x USB, MS Works, and maybe some other bits.

Dell misses out on remote control, 1 x FW800, camera, iLife, and maybe some other stuff.

Edit: Of course it's arguable whether the extended warrantees are comparable, and there will be some other differences (eg Dell forces a choice in version of Windows, whereas OS X arguably gives capabilities of both) and so on. My take is that price is about the same, depending on whether you want the hi res screen or the FW800 & camera & iLife (I don't rate Works - would buy Office & iWork anyway).

well, appleworks is better than m$ works, AND the 17" MBP DOES have 3 usb ports

my friend said fcp is bundled, i think he meant the banner that says it's universal on the MBP page, right?

Nice iCons...

Yeah, I get 5 hours on a regular basis.

Sorry for such a stupid question, but can you teach me how to make your icons show their information such as you did with your Mac HD and Windows HD partitions? Knowing the awesome Mac community, I should get a answer to this in no time so thank you in advance!

what's the resale value of typical PB G4? i have rev. A 1.25GHz, 80GB, 512MB, plus tons of installed software (final cut pro, mathematica, office 2004, iLife06, Font Book, Adobe CS 1, acrobat professional, iWork, Virtual PC, etc).....what would u guys think it's worth?

u all think i should sell it before no one would buy used PB G4??

if you sell it with all that software anywhere online, the piracy police will be right at your before you can say "forgot to wipe the hd"

Cams only use FW400, it's all they need... perhaps FW800 will connect with some cams with a 6 to 9 cable but it's no advantage.

Anyhow I've just ordered the 17" MBP an airport express (airtunes) and the ipod Hifi, but have I been too hasty.

No issues with the MBP, it seems like top value to me, but do I need the airport express to play my tunes from the MBP through the ipod hifi.

Hey,,, and is anyone aware of what I can carry my MBP around in.

Couldn't you just use a FW400 to FW800 adapter?
You could, but you wouldn't gain any performance benefit from doing so, and 90% of the firewire peripherals in the universe can't even use FW400 fully. FW800 is nice on paper, but it's still only good for extremely fast hard drives and a few specialized parts. There's just no good reason to kill FW400.

Because everyone with FW400 peripherals would be stuck without anywhere to plug them in...

Just use a cable with a FW800 connector on one end and a FW400 connector on the other. It works well.

If you're in the market for a 17" portable look no further. If your not, then do! Buy a 15" MacBook Pro, or have patience for you know what?

Thats what I was thinking. So why have a FW400 port then. Why not just have a FW800 port and an included adapter?

Bonehead Post Of The Day Award Goes To matticus008

You are correct, Multimedia, about firewire. I don't know why they just don't dump Firewire 400 and go solely with firwire 800. Do camcorders work with firwire 800 though?
Yes they do - perfectly.

NOT!

Sorry matticus008, you win the Bonehead Post Of The Day Award. All FW peripherals may be plugged into ANY FW port NO MATTER WHAT its speed and work. FW800 stuff plugs into FW400 ports with adaptors or FW400 to FW800 cables and VICE VERSA. There is no incompatability issue among these devices - only speed changes, manily FW800 devices run at half speed when in a FW400 chain.

I mix and mis-match FW800 HDs with FW400 HDs all the time and it is a non-issue. Yes MacTruck, everything COULD and SHOULD be FW800 with very inexpensive adaptors provided like Apple always ships a DVI to VGA adaptor with all their computers now. God only knows why the world isn't like that already. Must be some sort of engineering MENTAL BLOCK. :D As in "These Guys Must Be MENTAL".

What----? Where did you get that from?!?!?!

Whoa! I guess Mac Fly took those pics at NAB. Looks gorgeous.

Fingers crossed I can manage to snag one to run FCP on ASAP.

Whoever said the MBP 17" doesn't have 3 USB ports, it does.

Damn, this makes me want to trade in my stock 1.83 MBP and get a MBP 17"... it would cost $600 though... (with discount)

Especially if the thing runs cooler and doesn't whine. My MBP has a whole host of problems. The only widespread MBP problem I can think of that doesn't affect my MBP is the headphone sound click (though I rarely use the headphones!)

Question: is the lower-half (body) of the new 17" thinner than the old?

The overall thickness is still 1", and I assume that just like the 15", the lid part must be thicker to fit the iSight. So the body would be thinner (hard to believe, considering how thin the old 17" body was). Is that the case?

Just curious.

Both should have Express/54 anyway.
While fitting a bigger card would be nice (but impossible in the 15" due to no room?) I am glad in a way that Apple has standardized on the smaller size: the cards are smaller to carry, and now manufacturers will have to go all the way and fully miniaturize. I'd always rather have a 34mm card than 54. I'd rather small be the size that catches on!

He's in Las Vegas. Hey Mac Fly (film), please verify the 17" processor is also soldered directly to the mobo due to cooling and space issues. Thank you in advance for your help. Great shots. :)

How will he know that? Disassemble the whole machine?

The bad:

* No WUXGA (1920x1200) resolution, can't say I expected it though
* Still only ExpressCard/34, I was expecting a full-size ExpressCard/54 for a 17" laptop
* No 64-bit Merom CPU, it would have been a really nice surprise though :D

I agree. There are far fewer ExpressCard/34 options than ExpressCard/54 options. For a list of ExpressCard products, see this link.

I think you might be thinking of my earlier post.

I was comparing Australian prices and configurations of the 17" MBP and the Dell XPS 1710.

The Dell came with 6 USB ports, the MBP came with 3 USB ports.

So in comparison with the Dell, the MBP loses out by 3 USB ports (which is not important to me but might be to someone).
