Since I did the update the Adverts that appear in web sites (like this one) are now not working properly. I just see the Quicktime 'Q' with a '?' in the middle of it, seems like quicktime is broken for adverts?

Now THAT is a useful bug! A free QT ad blocker!

For anyone having trouble with the well-known "OMG, (insert update name here) hosed my Mac" syndrome, I have a question. Do you (a) just let your Mac sit there while it downloads and runs the update, or do you (b) carry on working?

If you answered (b) then you need to visit Unsanity's blog, here and read their analysis.

Definitely worth a read. I had long ago developed a "superstitious" fear of doing anything else while my mac updates itself but this article justifies and explains that fear. Apparently, there's a 100% reproducible bug on the prebinding (optimisation) that can render your mac unbootable. It's OK to carry on working while your Mac downloads an update and it's OK to carry on working while your Mac installs it but, while optimisation is running, do not touch anything and especially don't start any apps!

it takes apple longer time to patch OSX than M$ to windows! I hope Apple will patch more often!

at the same time, each patch makes OSX more slower, apple, do your job!

Like with the previous Security Update, no Adobe CS 2 app (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat) nor Word or Excel would start up (at least two other PPC apps still run, Camino, Drop Drawsers).

After a second restart they work normaly again.

Thanks. Very good to know!

That syndrome is probably not the explanation of what I experienced yesterday, when the updater hung during the optimization bit. (Never did finish "optimizing", btw, but happily it came up OK after I rebooted from the command line.) I'm not wise in the ways of objective-C , so I don't know enough about prebinding to figure out what probably happened :/

I agree that makes no sense what so ever. Infact people have been reporting speed increases w/ safari after this patch. Where are you getting your info?

Uh, this reminds me of Spinal Tap where all their amps go to 11 because thats louder than 10.

All Apple did was change the numbers on the battery you already had! They didn't give you a new battery! They just changed the reading so 85% equals 127% now.

"But major, 127% is better."

I may have exagerated the numbers just a little.

But Apple is giving me a new battery :D

Same thing here. Any idea how to fix this problem? Thanks...

You can't see ads? That isn't a problem, that's a solution! ;)

True, but it is quite annoying to see all these Q's with question marks in them where there is supposed to be something else...Anybody have any ideas? Thanks...

When are they going to fix the WEP security so my DS will work with it?

c'mon Apple... how hard could it be? The only way I can connect with my DS is if I turn security off, not that I'm always going online with my DS, but man, that is a hassle.

if you set your security to an exact 13 character passcode it should work, that's how i have mine set up. but you also have to have it be b/g compatible otherwise it doesn't pick up a signal. and yes it does work, and yes i have an airport extreme.

Sounds like a Flash issue to me. Re-download Flash player from adobe.com?

It is a Flash issue, indeed. A reinstallation of Flash Player fixes it :)

nice heads up with the flash issue, i thought the same thing. i think its solely what apple did to the way quicktime acts with safari and in some instances camino. Firefox loads everything correctly. Example: go to adobe.com with both firefox and safari the top banner loads in one and not the other.

You know, you could always hide that giant sack with the dollar sign on it, but we'd still know who you work for. :p

Ditto here. BTW, I had all the software updates current and definitely was NOT running any other apps during d/l, no apparent hang on optimisation, but when I went to my MySpace page and that of several others, the same image described above appeared wherever the player box on my page and friends' pages would normally appear. Just tested iTunes, no probs there.

Solution? Whatever it is, PLEASE keep it simple ;)

Thanks, all!

For others enduring the QT 7.1.6 update problems: I found these solution discussions at MacFixIt__

Considering the 7,000 hits on these two "work arounds" and the numerous Google hits on the 7.1.6 topic, we aren't the only unhappy campers. Of the solutions suggested at MacFixIt & MR, I've tried everything short of ditching all my plug-ins (root level deletions make me very nervous).

In the years of owning a Mac, I've never experienced this degree of difficulty after what ought to have been a simple update. Already, this "update" has cost me 2 +/- hours of time and anxiety and my laptop is still less than fully functional. Frankly, I don't consider myself enough of an advanced user to be attempting the suggested work arounds nor do I think it is the "Apple way". Only yesterday, I was bragging to a friend about how ordinarily easy updating Macs are compared to her continual struggles with her laptop from the Evil Empire.

I'll keep checking back, hoping someone finds a simpler solution to this less-than-perfect update to QT.
