Hi all,

Just wanted to know if any other LCD manufacturer makes these 17" Hi-Res screens?

Anyone else got any other results other than 9C79 (Samsung)? I for one thought that the LG panels on the previous revision Merom MBPs had better colour gradients.

Hi all,

Apologies to you all if I'm monopolising this thread.

Was doing some digging about the Samsung LTN170CT LCD panels that are being used for the 17" Hi-Res matte displays on the current Penryn MBPs.

Noticed that the Samsung site doesn't state if these panels are LED, whereas the 15" one states it specifically. Take a look:

http://www.samsung.com/global/business/lcdpanel/productList.do?upper_fmly_id=601&fmly_id=611

The specs also don't state is this panel is TN-film or IPS. But I've found the AnandTech article that mentions that the new Penryn MBPs use IPS. Here's the link to the specific page:

http://www.anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=3246&p=8

Now I'm really curious. I did Google TFT and found a Wiki page about the new 24" Al iMacs using H-IPS panels. It's under the heading "IPS".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TFT_LCD

So does anyone out there have a 17" matte Hi-Res display with a different manufacturers' code? I would really like to know.

EDIT: Would like to see a LG.Philips LP171WU3 (even better, the LP171WU5) in the 17". Don't have the link, but I think you can Google these.

Also, if anyone can shed some light on whether the new 17" matte Hi-Res displays are still TN or if they've really transitioned to IPS (of some variant), please let me know.

So far it looks like Apple is using all the same model screens for the high-res matte. Not sure about the glossy.

That article seems to be very 15" centric; not sure it applies to the 17". It'd be nice if there was a way to find out definitively if it's TN or IPS.

Hi

I definetly think there's no samsung LTN170CT display put into the mac pro 17" HR matte, cause it isnot LED. Or Apple doesn't put LED displays into it.. and its a marketing gag...

I really prefer the first point...

Well, that's true. It did sound like a sweeping statement to me at the time I read it though.

I think the MBPs equipped with LG displays fair better as LG.Philips utilises S-IPS for their panels. Here's hoping that Apple makes a switch to LG panels on the 17" matte Hi-Res screens.

As I mentioned in my post earlier, I really hope that the LG.Philips LP171WU3 makes it way into the 17" MBPs.

Check out the LG.Philips LP171WU5 though. The specs state that it's a 8-bit panel. With a 8ms GTG refresh rate. But doesn't go into mass production till Q3, 2008. Rats!

Here's the link. The specs for the WU3 and WU5 are in the PDF linked to the "Digital Catalog" option.

Hadschi: At this point of time, I'm really not sure what's going on. If I had to make an informed guess, I'd say yes. The LTN170CT is LED backlit, but I think it's still a TN panel.

Not that I've known even on bigger external monitors on LG screens look pretty bad, the colors are always washed out and not as vibrant as samsung.

I've exchanged about 10 times on the SR mbp and I've compared every millimeter of each panels and have to say that the LG while looked the most white all around, the colors had too much brightness saturated to make it looked washed out, (I had 4 lg). I actually preferred samsung and in the end the slight yellowishness or different white color at the bottom didnt bother me and the samsung screen is very very vibrant. The lg had too much white saturated into the colors and the red and blue and green didnt look as strong as it should and it all looked washed out.

But the SR mbp that I ended up keeping was the very last one I purchased (after 8-9 exchanges I took a final restock fee on the 9th mbp and I bought the SR mbp again 4 months later). I ended up with a 9c66 (I think its AUO or a chimei but its the best I've seen on the mbp screen. It has no yellowing and it has vibrant colors as well. *Also I exchanged about 8-9 times because I went to 2 different apple store here 4 from one and 4 from the other with no restock fee! Complaining works wonders and the managers at each stores were very nice.:D

The beast finally arrived! I updated the original post with first impressions and what I thought was the best looking ICC profile out of the eight or so I made at various brightness levels.

So far I'm liking this quite a bit!

rez... your profile seems really purple to me... :|

Is that your initial reaction? If you're used to really yellow greys, neutral greys will look blue. That's why humans are terrible judges of color. Of course, your screen could be nothing like mine at all, but I'd use it for a while and then switch back to the default Color LCD profile and see which you prefer then.

yeah that was my initial reaction. I have been using it now for about 20mins and its seem much better... still seem a little purple...

Cool, it usually takes me at least a day or so to adjust. Once you've sort of "forgotten" that you're using the new profile, switch back to Color LCD and see what happens.

I have to admit I'm not actively using the new screen; it's really my girlfriend's computer. I'll have mine in the next few weeks and it should be interesting to see how different (or similar) the calibrated profiles end up.

Anyone else have a calibrator that can upload some profiles? We need some diversity in here :)

Hi all, first post and new to Macs.

I was looking around for good color profiles for the 17" LED Hi-res penryn, and couldn't find any. I figured I should stop being lazy so I made an attempt at making one. After coming from a 4 year old Dell with what I now realize was a crappy, dim and yellowed screen, this looks good to me, but so would nearly anything.

If anyone did anything better, post 'em!

I got my 17" MBP two days ago. I have a 9C7A display. SwitchResX gives me a model number of LP171WU4-TLA1. After Googling, it turns out it is a LG-Phillips display. The screen is perfect. Nice whites, no yellowing whatsoever, and very bright. Does anyone have a good calibration .icc for this display yet?

Thanks for the update. I'm waiting for Apple to deliver my replacement machine now. It's the Easter holidays here in Singapore, so I guess I'll be waiting for a while.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll not be yellow. I AM glad to hear that the 17" HR matte LED displays are manufactured by other manufacturers.

I read somewhere on this forum about a 17" MBP user with a 9C72 panel from LG (model: LP171WE2-TLA3). I think this is a 1680x1050 panel though.

rezonat0r: Thanks for posting the profile. Unfortunately, I don't have a 17" HR matte display to try it on. If Apple replaces me with one with the same model display, I'll give your profile a shot.

In the meantime, does anyone know if we're seeing more LG displays than Samsung displays in the 17" HR matte Penryn MBPs? Would be interested to know if the number of exchanges and/or returns are making any impact to Apple product development.

I'm still waiting on my 17" Hi-Res to arrive. However, I've read on this thread that others seem to be happy with their 9C7A.

rez: i think your icc profile is spot on. took my eyes about 30 seconds to adjust, but it's much sharper then the default. good job & thanks for the profile.

Interesting! Jeez, why can't :apple: pick one and stick with it? I updated the OP with that part (I can't seem to find any basic specs for it though). If anyone else has this screen please chime in.

I agree! I have been using it for a day now and its great! Thanks!

Excellent to hear! :D

Thanks for all the feedback, I feel as though there's still some hope for Apple's portables, especially the 17" HR matte LEDs now that there're reports of another panel manufacturer making the rounds.

Rezonat0r: I highlighted a LG.Philips panel I would have liked to see on a 17" MBP HR matte. And this was the LP171WU3. This is a "traditionally" backlit UWXGA panel from LG.Philips. I also mentioned another panel from LG.Philips that I hoped would be used for a future MBP, and this was the LP171WU5. Possibly the LP171WU4 is a "stop-gap" panel between CCFL (WU3) and RGB-LED (WU5) backlighting.

Rezonat0r + jjahshik32: Personally I'd prefer an overall white, then a proper calibration (using a Spyder system a friend owns) to correct 'other colour related quirks'.

jjahshik32: I feel your pain! I'm somewhat in the same boat. So far, it's like this for me: Replacement machine arrives. Discover bad display. Try calibrating ICC profile. Call AppleCare. Drive to service provider. Technician verifies. Apple collects 'old' machine. Wait for replacement machine. The whole process takes about 3 to 4 weeks. We have no brick + mortar Apple Stores here, just appointed authorised resellers, and with almost zero customer rights in Singapore, I'd still rather deal with Apple Asia directly. I fear that the way things are going, the MBPs will be Penryn on Montevina and I'll still be on the phone with AppleCare... *sigh*

To those that have the 9C7A display. I've been searching through the thread trying to find the best calibration profile and have narrowed it down to these.

The one I'm using is Spyder2express2.2, but ymmv. Give your eyes a few seconds to adjust when you switch between profiles. Also, have a good picture up so you can see the differences. What do you think?

So most of the screens used by the matte mbp are the 9c7a?? I hope I get the samsung screen though once I receive mine monday... I'm soooo eager and I'll try out the calibrations that you guys uploaded on this thread!! and I'm already familiar with the purple push calibration (there was a similar one calibrated for the 15" sr mbp and I'll probably use that one as well). I remember the whites being very neutral and very white. The purple one was pretty cool I thought at first it was too purple but little by little it just disappears and looks great.

There's only been one report of the 97CA (LG) screen, all the rest (in this thread at least) have been the 9C79 (Samsung). Let us know which one you get!

I second that! Also, if you could tell us what week your MBP was built. It's on your serial number, WXXXX, or something. Just the 1st letter and the 4 digits after that will do.

I'm waiting for my replacement to arrive and I was looking for some correlation on screens and manufacturing dates.

I'm hoping for a 9C7A display, from the feedback of the readers here and on the other MBP threads on this forum.

BTW, Happy Easter Y'all!

Got a 9C7A here. Originally picked up a 15", but got it home and found the yellowing problem that everyone talks about. Didn't feel like playing the laptop lottery exchange with 15 inchers so I brought it back and upgraded to the 17" hi-res "ultimate" model that apple store sells. Display is just awesome. Amazingly bright, great colors, even lighting, and NO YELLOWING. I can live with the 1.4 extra pounds going back and forth to work for a display like this.

Oh I did calibrate it with my Huey Pro and it brought out a lot more detail, not to mention much more natural looking color in the display. Here's my zipped ICC profile. (D6500, gamma 2.2).
