so has this issue been fixed by updates or ....

I just want to know before I drop my very hard earned

Not to my knowledge, but an I/O board replacement seemed to make it MUCH better for me. Now it just beeps very slightly when the speakers wake up, and don't continue to beep LOUDLY like before up to 10 seconds after said "wake up".

If I understand correctly , after 10 seconds the beeps etc stop , yes ?

After ten seconds of inactivity in the audio channel, yes the beeping stops. But if you change the volume or start/stop playing a song in itunes they will begin again.

Sorry to resurrect this thread from the dead, but I'll need to reproduce the hissing and beeping from the headphone jack for an Apple technician tomorrow, and I'm not sure what the best way is to do this. The only headphones that I can get the issue with are my high-end Sony's, so I'm afraid that I won't be able to convince them of the issue.

Does anyone know of some easily reproduced, sure-fire ways to get the beeping to start?

I can't find a great pattern to mine. It does it when it wants to, it seems.

I suppose the best way to get it going is to run iChat, or another chat program. It seems the short intermittent sounds can bring on a BEEPING fit, where it will buzz and beep until another sound is heard.

But, please, if you gain any ground on this tomorrow let us know! I've sent mine in twice already... and it's still flawed!

I will report back on what the technician says tomorrow.

One way to easily get the beeps is adjust the volume up and down rapidly, stopping intermittently to listen for beeps, but this is fairly subtle.

It doesn't seem to get louder when the volume does either. This tells me it's an electrical (hardware) issue instead of just the audio production in the software. I'm going to be calling on Tuesday with my laundry list of complaints following my last repair. Maybe I can end up with a replacement ;). Let us know how it goes though, hopefully they don't say "it's within technical specifications" or "part of the design" or some other rehearsed bullcrap. In the past I've had much better luck dealing with applecare on the phone because I have good technical knowledge to explain problems in detail to higher level techs who are VERY helpful to approve and schedule repairs.

I am having to go to an Apple-authorized service provider in person because it is 1/2 hour from my home, while the nearest Apple store 1-2 hours away.

My primary issue is a defective iSight camera, but I'm trying to accentuate the beeping in order to get some results. A Customer Relations rep. told me that if I could get them to verify the issues, I would probably be able to get a price-for-price replacement (just in time for the new MacBooks). The iSight was already sent in for repairs through the Apple Store with no change in the problem, six hours of driving to and from later.

I live 1.5hr away from the nearest Apple anything, so as soon as I tell them that, they usually send a box for repairs. I always take pictures and document well in lieu that they will ask me to get it looked at to "verify" the issue. That gives them proof that I'm having the issues so there is no question about my claims. Since my first replacement earlier this year, I've been much more prepared when dealing with warranty issues.

I don't get it with my speakers or headphones but I can hear it with my Shures.

It doesn't really sound like hissing/popping, more like it's making some bad music of its own

point them towards this tread when your at the store, might help to show that there is some concern about the matter . also the threads over on apple discussions as well .

side note : I'm so shocked this hasn't been classed as a recall and had the parts replaced , bad news apple

Two easy ways:

1) Open terminal, and then press backspace. The Mac will play the error beep and then you will hear robot noises for a few seconds.

2) Have a copy of Nine Inch Nail's Broken loaded up in iTunes. The first track, Pinion, demonstrates the problem incredibly well.

(the most recent thread that I came across when searching)

Does this issue still exist with the new generation MacBook Pro:s?

I'd love to get this thing fixed. Has anyone else tried that after the new version came out? Will they just fix the insides (assuming that there's a solution) or replace the whole thing (I'd prefer former, I'm not huge fan of those new glass screens)?

I tried exactly the same headphones and same song (played by iTunes 8) on a Sony VGN-SZ5XN (it's a little bit more expensive machine but about a year older than mine) and on my rev. E MacBook Pro. With the Sony there was no noise at all, whereas on the MacBook Pro I could clearly hear static during the playback, and beeps for a short time after stopping the playback.

new Macbook Alu bouhght in Japan same poor audio quality!!!

Hi,

I ve just register to inform you that the new Macbook alu and i thinh Macbook pro have the same problem of this annoying bad sound quality.... let me explain

French student in Tokyo, i was waiting for the new macbook with fix of all this problems, but i didn t know anything about the noisy earphone output and i ve to pay the price for. I bouht it last saturday in Apple Ginza store in Tokyo, and was really impressed by the quality of the macbook pro until today, in university librairie i plug a panasonic earphone and immediatly noticed the problem/ before playing system sound a noisy white sound, like "pssssssssssss" start and will stopp after 20 s when the sound card go in iddle mode. After used itunes to play jazz and classic, this is really bad you can hear the "pssssssssssss" in background. Off course many user will not notice this problem, if u play music at high level and rock, pop but for a student use in librairie...this is totally inacceptable for the 184.000 yens i spent for this.

The "pssssssss" is very loud this is the "hiss" issue for previous model, i checked for many forums and found that issue remained for 2 years, like the macbook pro and Apple seems to be not concerned with this issue.
This is my first Apple computer and my last, i went to mac store today and explained the issue in genius bar and nobody noticed, off course the coldplay lound music in background didn t help that.

For conclusion, i ve an Asus computer and used the same earphone, there is a little noise but never complained about this, this macbook is really noisy and seems to be an hardware issue with poor quality audio chip...exactly like cheap mp3.

the model i have is the new Macbook alu 2.4 ghz, 2 go ram 250 hdd and backlight keyboard japanese version.
i ll bring back it tomorrow and have to pay 10 percent!! that apple rules.

Apple didn t listen customer issues, don t buy this the audio is completely poor quality. i ll buy a vaio z that have no complain with audio quality.

Thanks a lot, i am too disapointed by this macbook how is possible to be ignorant for 2years with bad audio quality issue. I post on the link u wrote above, bring my computer tomorrow.

someone know if the 10% is required for a 5 days old computer?

Hey guys,

I didn't read the WHOLE thread, but I did read up to the ground loop suggestion. I'm an audio engineer/composer/guitarist and have a minor background in car audio. I'd been trying to run the headphone out of my 2nd Gen MBP into the Aux In on my Digidesign Digi002 (Pro Tools) so I could hear system sounds through my mains without having to use the flaky Core Audio driver for the 002. Anyways, it was always noisy as hell, so I never used it...when I read the ground loop solution I remembered I had an old ground loop isolator that had been used in some car audio install, so I snagged it and tried it out. Total silence now...problem solved for me. Cheap, simple solution....

The quick way to sanity check grounding issues is to run
off the battery. The noises will cease on battery.

My MBP makes the noises on the battery too.

Thats funny!
Apple produces those iPods "everyone" wants to have but they are not able to give acceptable sound to a wannabe top of the end notebook!

So did mine. Mine made noise on or off the battery, whether the screen was on or off, etc...ground loop isolator fixed it. If you haven't tried, I think you should.
