FWIW, I have never had a good experience with any built-in sound on any computer. Whether they were Creative Labs, Realtek, or some other cheap garbage, the sound quality and drivers were lousy. Until consumers demand better quality en masse, we will continue to be limited to this.

FWIW, HP's laptops with Altec Lansing speakers sound very, very good. They would make a good model for Apple to try to copy if Apple is interested in improving audio quality. I will say as much in the feedback form.

I'm sorry for you guys who have this problem .

...I was going to get one for using with Serato Scratch Live ....not sure what to do now especially as there is that 'issue' with the USB as well that I read about all over the Serato site .

Do you / anyone think that Apple will actually do a recall or fix this someday at all .

How would that work IF they did ?

cheers and luck

I just got it yesterday, and right now, i decided to try my earphones on it. Furthermore, i don't think i have any problems, except apple should edit the red yellow and green button at the top left of an application, so you don't have to click right in the middle of the circle. that is more irritating than the audio popping.

what usb issue?

Well I'm going to be using one for Ableton Live and a Firewire Audio card, which is superior to USB based ones because information is constant rather than in bursts on USB.

Admittedly, the issue with the on-board sound card is not addressed by my previous posts as I have little desire to use it, however I do agree shipping a product with this magnitude of quality with an entirely unsatisfactory component such as this is wrong and should be addressed.

what usb issue?

http://scratchlive.net/faq
from scrachlive . net FAQ:

Apple MacBook Pro - USB dropouts on some USB ports
On some MacBooks and MacBook Pros, Scratch LIVE will have USB dropout problems on one USB port, but not others. If you are having problems with USB dropouts on your MacBook or MacBook Pro, try connecting your Scratch LIVE interface to a different USB port.

Several users have reported that the dropouts are particularly bad when using the trackpad. We have alerted Apple to this problem.

Note:

It's been posted on the forum that a replacement driver from a 3rd party developer: ragingmenace.com Sidetrack 1.5 can fix the trackpad dropouts, at the expense of two finger scrolling.

Sir , would you be kind enough to point me to a place where I could get info on decent soundcards etc to use with Ableton & / or LogicStudio ?

I'm about to embark on a rampant spree of music production ( as I'm new to the digital side of things )
:)

I just got it yesterday, and right now,

please would you start a thread with your findings / experience with the MBP and Serato
?

sorry, I don't understand how that could cause more of a problem than 'bad audio' ..its just clicking a button

To all..... I'm sorry for the tripple post btw ...I'm quite new to all this

I got the apple wireless keyboard and mouse with it, and i think sometimes the connection isn't very good, so it doesn't click on the buttons, but next to it. This is irritating.

Wanna hint?

I have something to try... it won't work all the time, but it sure as heck works for me.

Guess what.. good news for you... go ahead.. get online... start surfing around.. you'll hear the static, strange goings ons... ok. Now... Turn airport off... ahh the silence...
I was testing to see if I had the Airport Extreme Update 2009-001 audio error. Sure enough I did... But when I shut it off... my noisy line shut up too.

Anyone have odds on the atheros card?
my bet is that it constantly loads to a noisy part of the processor.. I know... retarded.. but hey, it worked for me.

Interesting huh.:apple:

Did not solve my problem. 2 week old MBP 2.5 GHZ.

Murph:mad:
Have you done all of your system updates yet?
Listen to see if there is a quantitative difference after the Airport Update.

*edit*
After downgrading the Airport Extreme Update 2008-001, the sound is back all the time. When I didn't have it, it was only when the wifi card was on.
So apparently for me, it's either stuttering, or r2d2 giving me hearing tests.

I have a BlackBook SR 2.2 and whilst i hear the noise that abounds when the sound card goes into/wakes from power saving mode, i have no popping issue at all

And no weird noises during audio playback either.

Well this truly sucks..... so the MB and MBP have ***** speakers, poor external headphone support and stereo out???

So why buy them if you want to watch a movie or listen to music???
I really want one, but will NOT buy if the audio is so problematic..... comments pls

So what is the main consensus on here?

....is this a software or hardware problem ?

thoughts / opinions please (I'm thinking of buying soon)

thanks :)

I think the majority consensus says it is a hardware (wiring insulation) issue, and will probably be fixed in the next revision of the product. I would suggest to anyone thinking about purchasing to wait for a couple weeks until the keynote is complete and we see what all is revised. If you look at the macrumors front page, somewhere there is an article about screen orders for a new MacBook line in Q3, which would put the timeframe in September sometime. Now whether this includes the Pro or not is completely up in the air. I definitely would not buy before the 2nd wk in June.

Thank you :)

I am definitely going to wait till after the keynote and will probably purchase a refurb unit when the new stuff comes out ...

...that's why I wondered about a fix , I just thought that IF it is software then a fix could come eventually ....that said if it is hardware then surely Apple will fix it , no? . as if they don't I'm screwed for buying till the next gen go's on the refurb store which could be an age away .....arrrgghh

This is really poor :apple:.. I just cannot believe that this is happening on a top end computer

Yep, have the beepies

A very high pitched steady whine if the speaker volume is cranked up high enough. A second or two of R2D2 noises at the end of an audio track, again if the speaker volume is way up high. (Bear in mind this is a 200 watt Klipsch system though, so at any reasonable volume in the speaker you can depend on the computer volume controls to crank out the noise without the interference).

And, more seriously, no matter what, the occasional lone pop at regular volume, which I get the feeling seems to be associated with application switching or something.

The built-in speakers seem just fine, fortunately.

I suspect a lot of it could be fixed with a firmware update. I wish Apple would come clean with what is going on; whether it is hardware or firmware or Leopard; whether they're waiting on firmware from Intel, or what.

I've not heard of MacBooks having the problem by the way; just MBP.

Calling Applecare today to get some answers on this folks. Will let you know how it turns out. Was trying to watch a movie last night and it just beeped my last nerve ha. I did notice something though, I not only have random pops from headphones, but speakers attached to my Airport Express... That just doesn't make any sense, unless the pops are coming from iTunes. BUT they happen when itunes isn't even open as well... Hopefully the call will either put this whole thing in the right direction, or get mine fixed at the least.
Add-on: The built-in speakers on my Penryn mbp do not pop as others have described, just sources connected to the audio out port.

Does anyone know if a similar problem exists in PC laptops with the Santa Rosa chipset? If both MacBook and MacBook Pro have had the problem since last summer (when the Santa Rosa motherboard was launched with the Merom C2D -- the recent update simply put a Penryn C2D processor on the SR motherboard), it follows that if PC laptops manufactured during the same time have it too, there's a hardware issue, while if they don't, there's a driver or firmware issue.

I think it's back and forth between faulty wiring or firmware at this point, but it would be interesting to hear some feedback (or the lack thereof ha) from SR pc owners.
