I am really hoping for the 32 GB version with everything mentioned. But what intrigues me most is the OLED screen, increased battery life (I drain mine like crazy on EDGE in my four hour class, just texting and visiting the facebook app. That is with wifi off and 3G disabled)

I wonder how much it is going to be without a contract? I am probably going to have to buy the phone outright and they are not going to do any deals for current iphone users (even though they did last time) I really don't care about spending full price because I want all the extra bells and whistles along with the 3.0 software. I just hope it launches before the end of june. I have been saving up for it and would like it asap.

I feel like they really need to hit it big with this iphone seeing as the pre is coming out like people have mentioned and blackberry wanting to keep its firm grip on the market.

the 3.0 software and new hardware have to put the focus back on apple. hopefully they can deliver.

A lot of things that you've mentioned we know for a fact are happening, mainly through 3.0 beta.

I would also like to put in a 'request' as it were; a light/flash for the camera so that you can use the camera at night a little better. It's useless in low light conditions

The main one of these features I would like to see is the OLED. The video quality of OLED screens is unmatched by anything, not to mention that it's a brighter and more efficient technology and will one day be used for all displays.

I can guarantee that we won't have the next generation iphone in our hands until AT LEAST mid July. It just won't happen.

I'm trying to think of what good can come from upping the CPU. Besides Safari and the core OS, increasing CPU performance and RAM for programs just creates a headache for developers in trying to create software for multiple devices. Do you code for older software and ignore speed and memory increases? Do you ignore older hardware and stick with the latest? And because Apple isn't even clear with the differences between the 2nd gen iPod Touch and the 1st gen iPod Touch (HUGE world of difference in performance), I'm wondering if they won't botch this in some way. In fact, in no official docs does it show the speed at which the iPhone OS is running for a device. Had we not found out through other methods, we'd just be wondering why on earth the 1st gen iPod Touch was so gosh darn slow!

Specs cannot stay the same forever. Developers will have to test the app against different devices. All you need is the iPhone you have now and the new one and you can make an informed decision on which hardware it will be available for. Just make sure whichever app you purchase is compatible. It is mentioned on the app store.

There was a chance of OLED but since Gruber didn't mention it, don't count on it. He's as reliable as they come. It's almost the same thing as an apple press release.

As far as battery life, if you're having that much of a problem get the mophie juice pack or some other external battery.

BTW, shouldn't you be concentrating on class instead of constantly texting for four hours? If you want iPhones of the future, better start getting good grades now.

Computer programmers have been dealing with this for decades. The iPhone isn't a console; it would be insane to expect a phone to stay the same for more than a year or so at a time.

ALL I WANT IS...

a 13-inch unibody machine (aluminum obviously) with FIREWIRE BACK and a dedicated graphics card!!!!

That's all I ask...I'd pay $1700 for that, that's how much I want that IN A SMALL SCREEN because not everyone wants a massive 15 or 17 inch screen.

While I know that John Gruber knows his stuff, just because he didn't mention the OLED technology being a possibility in the next update, doesn't mean it won't happen. And as far as the 1.5x battery life in the next revision, it won't happen without the OLED screen, they go hand-in-hand. Lastly, LG and Apple just signed a five year contract together saying that LG would provide Apple displays, and the displays LG talked to them about were OLED screens. If Apple gets OLED screens at all, they're coming to iPhone first. :apple:

Regarding rebranding of the macbook line, here's what I think.

Macbook pro: 13, 15, 17inch models all Alu with GPUs (so what is currently Macbook will get incorporated into this line up)

Macbook air: as currently.

Macbook: IS the tablet - and will do everything rumored, and what's more will be beautiful for reading... wait for it... books.

With the faster processor, I won't have to mentally restrain myself my throwing my iPhone against the wall when it lags and I drop my streak in Tap Tap.

Just realised...iPhones are going to be faster than my old 12" 867 PB...

I am pretty sure the tablet will be called t:apple:t = tapplet.

Damn I am so smart I should get a copyright on this one :p

Bloody hell. I am really going to need a laptop ASAP when I sell my laptop next weekend. The AAFES in Germany gets anything new so damn slow...

I really want to see what happens at WWDC but, the conflict of waiting and needing a new laptop plagues me as well.

The only OLED screen I've seen (the 11" Sony one) had a terrible refresh rate. I mean it looked fantastic, colors/lines were crisp, nice viewing angles, white whites, black blacks, but the refresh rate. Ack. It was like looking a CRT at 40Hz.

Macbook Pro becomes a Macbook and all of the laptops come under the single name "Macbook" ;)

Good point about the environmental angle. If they are going to continue the plastic enclosures how does that jive with their green advertising?

Maybe the cost of the Aluminum casing is turning out to be more than anticipated? Could this explain the rebranding and return to plastic Macbooks?

Perhaps they're going to give bio-engineered plastics a go. These would be way better for the environment than all the energy required to cut the aluminium casings and would be also biodegradable!?

I happen to like the white Macbook...I hope it sticks around for a while yet. :D

rebranding MB and MB Pros

Other interesting tidbits include:

- Minor laptop refresh with branding change calling all aluminum-based notebooks "MacBook Pros" and leaving "MacBook" for the plastic units

I guess the distinction between the current gen of MB and MB Pros is very tight. The MB is a hit and probably taking more of teh Pro sales than expected. It has definitely brought more people to Apple.

About the rebranding of the current MB to MB Pro 13". I guess this would work, but they would need to add that FW back. Maybe some minor twiddling of the motherboard to include the drivers? The easy accessibilty was a minor point that saved it for me - although cloning.backing up over USB2 is a pain in the....

By re-introducing a plastic model, would be inline with Apples desire to introduce another layer of pricing - ie a cheaper model, altough not necessarily a netbook.

Unless... the new netbook/iTablet/e-reader is the Mac"book"!:D

I like the white one too, but the light gray palmrest looks bad very quickly and is tough to clean. There's something about matte gray... I think the reason PCs (and Macs) were beige back in the day was also so they still look beige after a year of use. Darker beige, but still beige. The white Macbook's palmrest looks gray at first, then gets beige left and right of the trackpad.

I would't mind some color actually, those original iMac in the fancy colors were beatiful

Am I the only one who wouldn't want a phone with a glowing apple on it? 'cause I really want something that'll shine like a beacon to anyone and everyone when I'm on my phone at night.

I don't have anything against plastic books as such, but if they're keeping the current plastic macbook I wish they'd change it a little. I don't want to buy something which is probably going to crack

How about that (pure speculation):

Phil Shiller points out a chart showing the number of people requesting the 8 hour integrated battery in the 15" Macbook Pro. Then unveils the updated 15" Macbook Pro: minor speed bump but double the battery life, same price. Then he says that "8 hours of battery life is a kind of pro feature, so we're calling the unibody 13" Macbook a Macbook Pro now. Yes, it's got 8 hours of battery life too, which also gives us enough space for a firewire 800 port".

Then the only Macbook (non pro) would be the white plastic one. Apple could introduce a new consumer line notebook, how about some plastic uniobody? It would need be a bit thicker to be relatively stable, but it would also be much simpler to manufacture: Mold plastic unibody, screw on logic board, screw on bottom plate. No more complicated frames. It would be thicker and heavier than the Macbook pro, but hey, it's the affordable consumer line.

The new iPhone won't be seen until mid-July, since Apple need to get FCC approval for it, and that is public. Therefore they have to announce it before they get approval, so they need the gap.

I mean they could release it in other countries (non-US) immediately (since they don't need approval), but Apple is so US-biased, it'll never happen.

As for the MB/MBP issue. If they add the 9600M GT into the current 2.4 GHz MB, then I will buy one. I have a 2.2 MBP currently and, recently, I've had to drag it all over the place. I have a 20" ACD on my desk at home, so I'm not bothered about losing a bit of screen res.

Hmm. Not to sure why anyone would be surprised about rebranding. It had to be done. You can't have a $1799 air (over priced) and a MacBook at $999 and release a netbook for $700. Apple has to take a hit somewhere. What will be surprising is the MacBook pro models, CPU, how many cores, gpu speed and such, in the future.

I forsee some sort of 4/8 core machine someday as laptops replace desktops, with the ability to turn off cores when working on battery power. Not a dream, but reality. Just a matter of when.

Interesting (the bit about the rebranding). If it happens, I would hope they add back in the black macbook. I can't stand the white ones for some reason. That said, I think Apple should stick with the branding they have now --and I think they will decide to.

And of course, a faster iPhone with more storoage capacity is always great news. I sure hope it becomes true!
