This is what eBay did, which isn't all that bad—considering Apple's dictatorship by the arbitrary. This is a better move than what they did by just wanking all of those apps.

Who brings in revenu in your family ? What with you having to be besides 4 kids at all times, it means neither you or your wife can go to work.

Unless... no... not home schooling ? I can't wait to see what kind of socially misadjusted peeps you've wrought on the world.

We have a family business and Yes we home school, home schooling is the fastest growing form of education in the US. It is the fastest growing form for a reason!

edit: If you mean socially misadjusted by not feeling at home in a strip bar, or an orgy, then yes they will be mal-adjusted.

This really is a "duh" move. So you're saying explicit apps should be in their own section? And invisible to users under 18? Wow!

I commend Apple for putting this in place but this is really how the rating system ought to have been implemented in the first place.

No, I meant socially misadjusted by having been taught that mistrust is the way of life and that not mingling with other people is probably for the best.

And yes, home schooling is the fastest growing form for a reason, that's because traditionnal schooling is well established and thus can only grow as population levels rise. Home schooling is the new fad on the block and can grow as much as paranoid over-protective parents that don't know any better can manage to make children.

Think of it like Old company selling 50,000,000 units per year, and suddenly selling 60,000,000 (traditionnal schooling) and New company selling 10 units per year and suddenly selling 20...

Your argument is as sound as people claiming New Company is set to overtake the market, "just look at their growth!".

I find it interesting that the term "porn", short for the word pornography, has morphed from its definition of "explicit sex acts" to anyone in a bathing suit.
Have we become that puritanical?

The problem with home schooling is when parents do it not because they think they can give their kids a better education, but because they think they can give their kids a more correct education. I know very liberal, upper middle-class friends who home school one (not both) of their kids because they couldn't find a good fit for his talents and interests. I also have several relatives who homeschool their kids because they believe an invisible white man in the sky created women to be subservient to men 6000 years ago.

Echo chambers are scary things.

Sounds to me like somewhat of a piecemeal solution.

I would have preferred if you could select filters in iTunes to select which categories to show or hide (not just adult/non-adult content); and this would apply to all views and top selling lists.

So instead of browsing through 150K+ apps, to find the gems that interest you, you can immediately cut out any in categories that don't interest you. You both get rid of the adult material, and cut out most of the trashy apps in one go.

Agreed, but the problem is, what Apple considers 'explicit' is actually PG-13 at worst. Every game that features a girl in a bikini or other sexy outfit must be marked explicit now? Gonna be a whole lot of 'explicit' apps!

They really hope Apple does add this

How can this be bad? Now Apple can allow access of this category to only people old enough to make their own decisions. I'm hoping Apple will have it set to blocked by default, allowing you to enter it upon entering a password, so no one who doesn't clearly indicate they want it has to see mature apps.

Anyone stupid enough to put it into another category will not reach the people who will buy their explicit app and they will be blocked forever.

This is how it should have been off the bat.

It is not just kids who have never been to a public school who are swelling the growing ranks of home schooled kids, it is growing so fast because parents are removing them from public and home schooling them for the first time, so your analogy is not quite right.

My kids are not taught mistrust. They are free to see everything on my computer as I see it on theirs, they can pick up the phone and listen in if they want to unless it is something the other party does not want known like a sickness in their family. My kids know for a fact that I don't go anywhere where they can't go, just like they can't go anywhere I can't go.

I respect them and they respect us. I live under the same rules as they do. Yes I hear you asking about martial sexual relations. It is possible to have privacy, but that is private.

My kids probably meet more new people in their own age group per week than the average child, they also have strong and lasting friendships. We go to lots of functions with like minded families.

We live as a family, under family rules, and there is none of this us vs them that so many families deal with.

edit: Sorry to all, I didn't realize how far off topic this has gotten. Any new posts from me in the thread will be on topic.

It's also going to be a mess. A swimsuit catalog in the same category as a game featuring a cartoon woman in hotpants in the same category as iWobble.

If they do add such a category and re-allow apps, it needs to be opt in based. I have no interest in seeing it either.

I still think it is a bad idea, as Apple has no way to know who is seeing such apps.

But whatever. I am not a kid, and I don't want to see them, so make people who do have to actively do so, not me.

The thing with traditionnal schooling is that it covers a wide variety of material at the high school level. Elementary schooling might be within the reach of your normal parent with a good education, but high school education requires mastery of a lot of domains.

Sure your kid might not be interested in Biology/Chemistry/Physics/Maths/Geography/History etc.. but he still needs to learn the basics in each of these, and who knows, he might grow into it.

I have rarely seen anyone who is able to cover all these subjects and teach them at a high school level, which leads me to believe Kresh's 16 year old is either a figment of his imagination or will lack a lot of knowledge to gain entry into college.

If you think your child is not getting challenged enough in school and you think he has interests in subjects not covered by school, your best bet is to do extra curricular activities with him, not pull him from school altogether.

The other problem with home schooling is lack of social interaction it causes in children and adolescents. This interaction is necessary as kids grow into adults and need to learn how to interact with their peers. This will be crucial in the job market later on and in general in their lives.

I find it interesting that the term "porn", short for the word pornography, has morphed from its definition of "explicit sex acts" to anyone in a bathing suit.
Have we become that puritanical?

"Cooper: You know America was founded by prudes. Prudes who left Europe because they hated all the kinky, steamy European sex that was going on. And now I, Cooper Harris, will return to the land of my perverted forefathers and claim my birthright. "

But what about violence?

This is a good first step. But I'm more offended by gratuitous violence (which IMO can do greater psychological damage to children). I wonder if Doom or GTA will be lumped in with "explicit?" Probably not....

Crazy parents, are you serious. A parent is crazy for wanting to keep smut from their children. That is just evil.

Yes a parent is crazy for wanting OTHER people to keep smut from THEIR children. I don't want my children seeing smut therefore YOU can't market it and sell it? Um no that's not how it works. You watch YOUR kid and YOU discipline YOUR kid if they do that kind of stuff. I have three kids. I don't say 7-11 is bad becuase 7-11 sells playboys and penthouse. I don't say ALL computers are bad because ALL computers have adult programs for them and I don't expect that Apple has ANY responsibility to monitor the apps on their phone/computer or anything else they make. That's MY job and it's crazy for me to think otherwise. I'm the parent I'll do my job and everyone else can go on marketing whatever they want to the rest of the adults in the world thank you very much.

Better than nothing right?

I would think some people might consider this progress verse nothing at all being allowed...

This is fantastic. The most important thing here is that Apple stop censoring Apps. This is an excellent move towards progress. This will allow programs/APP's which may be more intended for adults.

it is time for Apple to stop censoring any programs/content for Macs, iphones and more. Let the consumers decide.

if people are offended, they don't have to purchase anything, and of course, they can set their itunes preferences to not see this content.

Apple as an OS/Hardware/Services/Store company ought NOT ever get involved in any content regulation censorship.

Next thing apple needs to do is stop censoring app's which are competitive with their products. ie Allow Netflix to have an app on iphone/ipod. this app ought to be able to play back movies/tv from the Netflix on demand service.

The reason for Apple's addition of the new category is unknown, although it seems possible that the company may have reconsidered its decision to remove the "overtly sexual" applications in the face of backlash from developers and users and has decided to create a dedicated category in an attempt to find a middle ground in the controversy. The use of a dedicated category for explicit material could supplement the age-rating system used for all App Store applications to easily make the entire category invisible to certain users using Parental Controls.

The reason for Apple adding this additional category is not hard. The app purge was Apple, how did Obama say it, "acting stupidly"! Jobs says no porn and yet Playboy is fine but a ladies swimwear app for a swimwear retail outlet in the UK is not?!

C'mon, get real! Apple should have had this category all along, while still keeping the XXX pure porn banned from the app store.

Well Said!!! society ought NOT censor in order to help people be good parents. This parent ought to set their Itunes to NOT be able to see or download these app's. but... don't tell the millions of other iphone/ipod users that they can't get this.

This is great progress! culture and society need not replace good parenting. If a parent is concerned, you need to control the content in your own house. not others!!

Out here in Silicon Valley many family units have scientists or engineers in them who are more than able to teach math and science at a much higher level than can be taught in most of the public schools (some exceptions in certain towns, of course). And there are networks of home schooling parents, so, for example, if one parent is going to teach a unit on newtonian physics, other parents bring their kids over, and they all chip in for appropriate props, equipment, and other materials. Sometimes the class takes place in some family member's lab at Stanford or Berkeley. Some other parent may be best suited to teach history, etc.

In other words, the "home" in "home schooling" is a bit of an exaggeration, at least out here.

perhaps Apple ought not be in the Porn business, but they ought to NOT censor what App's people can install on their iphones. If someone wants a penthouse App, why not? i say let em, just stop censorship.

Let other developers sell and install programs onto their iphone via other ways. APP's ought to be able to be bought elsewhere, then added into the itunes software for syncing to your device. or being able to buy and download direct within your iphone/ipad.

The time for censorship is over. whether sold and distributed by Apple or not.

Aaah, total isolation from peers and handguns... Your kids will be perfectly prepared for the real world.

I hope you are not their language teacher, because your posts and signature contain quite a few errors..

Does this mean that "XXX pure porn" is now back on? I'm sure there's a category for it. I mean, other than Safari.
