I just took delivery of my replacement Crucial RAM from Amazon and a few things give me reason for cautious optimism.

1) I immediately installed the two Crucial DIMMs on their own and ran Memtest86 in multi-CPU Parallel Mode and went through two passes with no errors. The ones I returned couldn't get through one pass without throwing errors.

2) Checking the SPD data with TechTool Pro I have confirmed that the specs of these new modules are identical down to every last value. This, too, was not the case with the Crucial I returned. It was almost identical, but some of the timings differed. In particular, tRFC (whatever that is) was 300 on the previous Crucial and is now 260, the same as the Apple Elpida. There was one other different value, but I can't recall it offhand.

3) There was no 20-30 second delay on initial boot up with the new RAM installed. This may mean nothing, but I had it every other time I installed new modules, so I mention it.

Thanks very much for the update. It's obviously far too early to make a definitive declaration on my replacement set yet but so far so good after 4 days of heavy usage. :)

The Crucial part number for your replacement is interesting. It seems to be specific to Europe. I'd be very interested to know the number on the DIMMs themselves once they've arrived if you could share that.

Best of luck!

Mine are in so far it's OK after an hour of use which the RIPJAWS were playing up
going to do some Photo Shop now to stress them a little

Sorry but, didn't read the post before installing so haven't read off the DIMMs

Codes on the packaging are as follows

2-8GB DDR3L- 1600 SODIMM MAC

CT2C8G3S160MBCEU maybe the EU is Europe ?

Bar codes read

6 49528 76213 9

6000037927

244455

These sticks have 4 chips per side

No worries, just by your description I can tell you got the exact same set as my replacement, which by the way is still going strong after a week.

Yes, I'm sure the EU refers to Europe and the fact that they are 4 chips to a side means they are the high density version. You would probably see an 8DED at the very end of the part number on the DIMMs.

The ones I returned were the 8 chip per side, low density. I'm not sure that had anything to do with the problems though because the Apple Elpida (2x8GB) DIMMs I'm using together with the Crucial are low density.

Anyway, I'm getting more hopeful with every passing day that these problems are behind me and I hope this solves it for you as well. :)

I have a late 2013 iMac with 32GB Apple stock RAM (Elpida I think)... and it kernel panics everyday.

I tried everything, I got it to the Apple Store, they re-installed all and told me everything was working fine in the hardware department and...

kernel panics everyday.
I'm going to check later if my RAM is 1.35V or 1.5V, because I'm reading everywhere almost all 2013 iMacs crash when using 32GB 1.5V RAM

And then I'm calling AppleCare because I have the 3 months free support and they end in April

Are you, by any chance, connecting the iMac to a Drobo or other external device that requires drivers?

There may be clues to the origin of your problems in the kernel panic log.

I could be wrong, but I don't think Apple ships any Haswell iMacs with 1.5V anymore. It's all 1.35V.

Have you tried running Memtest86 in multi-CPU parallel mode? It will burn right through it and you'll know fairly quickly if you have any errors. On the last set of Crucial I returned I had errors in Memtest but the Apple Hardware Test passed it with no problems.

And then I'm calling AppleCare because I have the 3 months free support and they end in April

I doubt very much they'll be able to do anything for you over the telephone for this problem. You need to send it in and for that you have a one year warranty.

I just activated the AppleCare for mine and highly recommend it. I get it on every Mac I buy. It will extend Apple's coverage to 3 full years from the date of purchase. You can buy it for about $115 at LA Computer or Amazon. Look for used deals for even more savings. I bought mine for $90 on Amazon because it was used, meaning the shrink wrap had been removed from the box. like I care. :D It registered just fine.

Nop, I tried to run for a time my iMac without almost anything connected and the kernel panics keep appearing. There seem to be more if I'm running Logic Pro X or Sibelius, but I get some surfing with Safari or just idling. The cause can be "coreaudiod", "Logic Pro X", "Mail", "kernel_task"...

That's what I'm going to do right now, I was creating the USB dongle with Memtest86

I know they can do little by phone, but they told me they can get to my home to grab my iMac, my nearest Apple Store is 80km away and they did very little to solve the problem.
Anyway I'm en Europe, I have 2 years warranty here, but free AppleCare for 3 months, as they told me in the Store

Yeah, that sounds very familiar. :( It sounds like bad RAM.

Well, that's great that they'll come to you. AppleCare here works similarly because my nearest Apple Store is 185km away in Osaka. They send a courier with a special shipping container to pick it up, fly it to Tokyo the next day and generally have it back the day after that.

Please post with the results of your Memtest.

Is there a label attached to the other side of the DIMM? I think that would glean more useful information.

****, I already started the Memtest xD

Will post the results, but I think this is going to be a looooong test

Be sure to hit ESC when Memtest86 starts up and change the CPU setting to Multi-CPU and Parallel mode. Not only will it run many times faster (about 30-40 minutes for a full pass) but you are more likely to see errors as well.

I saw no errors when running it in the default single CPU mode but did in multi with my bad RAM.

Yep, I'm doing it Mult-CPU Parallel

Yep, I'm doing it Mult-CPU Parallel

Actually, it might take about 60 minutes to complete one pass through all of the tests. I can't remember exactly, but it was around that. With the bad RAM, I got single errors in each of the tests from about test 5 on.

If that runs without errors, please post a pic of the label side of the DIMM. On the Apple Elpida in my machine it says DDR3L 1.35V right on the label.

Well this is weird, because the test got 0 errors.

I'm confused because all the signals are saying it's bad RAM but if it's ok I have no idea what the problem is. My logs folder is full of kernel panics reports from a lot of different apps.

Maybe I will try the test but with more passes, sometimes It's many hours for a KP to appear

Maybe the problem is Mavericks bad memory management when dealing with "non-original" apple memory at 32gb.
My imac have 16gb(2x8) 1886mhz memory modules from g.skill running perfect. People had kernel panic only when installed 32gb. I don't think it's a bad memory problem but something related to memory management from the system or hardware or both when the memory aren't the ones sold by apple.

Apple doesn't make memory and the modules he is having problems with ARE the stock Apple RAM that was shipped with his machine at 32GB.

I am using 2x8GB of Apple's stock Elpida RAM now with 2x8GB of Crucial DDR3L for 32GB total with no problems at all. I was having major kernel panics before with other brands.
Well this is weird, because the test got 0 errors.

That is definitely Elpida 1.35V DDR3L, although I believe the model number is slightly different than my own.

Sorry, I know I probably asked this before, but, in the kernel panic log under the section

loaded kexts:

Are there any third party drivers? That would be anything above where you start seeing com.apple.xxxxxxx

I've started with adding 2x8GB sticks from my Mac Mini to 2x4GB stock sticks. Kernel panics... thanks to this thread learned about 1.35v rams.

Bought 2x8GB Ripjaws (F3-1866C10S-8GRSL) 1866Mhz, tested with only two of them: worked @1866 and Geekbench benchmarked memory performance ~14-15GB/sec

Added stock 2x4GB 1600Mhz sticks to the mix, stable but dropped to 1366Mhz and Geekbench memory speed dropped to ~9-10GB/sec. (I've tried every possible slot combination to rule out dual-channel)

Then I bought two more Ripjaws, out of fear of not being able to find same spec'd sticks in the future. 4x8GB running at 1866Mhz, Geekbench says ~14-15GB/sec memory speed, and stable for 3+ weeks.

That's the problem, it's the stock RAM! I tried to remove some modules to run with 16-24GB but my iMac refuses to power up without the 32GB.

And there is one third party kernel module: com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard
But it's not causing the problem (it's a USB dongle licenser) because I have many kernel panic logs before installing that driver...

This is one of the first panics after recovering my computer from the Apple Store:

As you can see, no 3rd party kernel extensions are found.

I have many peripherals connected, but I tried without anything connected and it persists.

Anyway, they're not some weird accessories. My iMac has to work with things like them without problems...

That's the problem, it's the stock RAM! I tried to remove some modules to run with 16-24GB but my iMac refuses to power up without the 32GB.

Wow! Now that is unusual, Vitet. It sounds to me like you may have something more seriously wrong beyond the RAM. Perhaps at the logic board/memory controller level. Alternatively, you may have a defect in the DIMM slots themselves. Are all of the DIMMs seated firmly? You can apply a fair amount of pressure when seating them. There should be a satisfying click when pushing down evenly on both ends of the module.

Absolutely!

Send that machine back to Apple for replacement right away. The fact that it won't even boot without the full 32GB loaded is proof enough it has issues. There should be no questions asked.

Then I bought two more Ripjaws, out of fear of not being able to find same spec'd sticks in the future. 4x8GB running at 1866Mhz, Geekbench says ~14-15GB/sec memory speed, and stable for 3+ weeks.

Glad to hear about your success.:)

As mentioned above, I have 32GB comprised of 16GB Apple Elpida and 16GB Crucial RAM at 1600Mhz and my Geekbench memory scores are also generally between 14-16GB/sec.

Also, I see that this particular panic was on 10.9.1. Have you tried updating to 10.9.2?

I don't think that's behind your problems but there were some crashing/freezing issues involving USB3 devices that were resolved for me in 10.9.2.

Yep that was before updating. Now I'm on 10.9.2 but it's the same.
The bad thing about this is that it's completely random, and the KP appear when more things are going on in the computer, so when the Mac exited the Apple Store all was right, but to put things in perspective, I got about 1-2 KP everyday I used the computer.

The causes were
Code:
com.apple.MailSe
Sibelius 7
kernel_task
Sibelius 7
Sibelius 7
Sibelius 7
coreaudiod
Sibelius 7
kernel_task
Audacity
Sibelius 7
coreaudiod
Sibelius 7
Logic Pro X
Logic Pro X
coreaudiod
coreaudiod
kernel_task
Logic Pro X

As you can see, the app causing it is just the one I'm using. I started working with a score in Sibelius and now was working on music in Logic Pro X.
And they are completely random, because they appear when I'm working, surfing or just when the computer isn't in use (at night if I keep it on, for example)

I'm going to try the memory thing (pushing it a bit more) now

EDIT: I was testing (again) for the peripherals. I just got a KP caused by Logic Pro X with nothing connected (not even my secondary display):
Code:
USB Device: BRCM20702 Hub
USB Device: Bluetooth USB Host Controller
USB Device: FaceTime HD Camera (Built-in)
USB Device: Keyboard Hub
USB Device: Apple Optical USB Mouse
USB Device: Apple Keyboard

EDIT2: I managed to boot with 24GB, extracting the first dimm from the top instead of the bottom one.
Let's see what happens from now

I forgot to mention the layout of the slots. If you are only looking to use two modules for 16GB, they should be in the bottom slot and the second one from the top. For 24GB, you now have the correct configuration with the bottom three slots occupied.

That said, how has your system been running with the 24GB? No more kernel panics? Weirdly, for a lot of people who experience the crashes at 32GB, the machines will often run totally stably at any lesser configuration.

This is obviously not a permanent solution though. I would still send the machine back to Apple to let them sort it out in that case. I was about to do the same if the Crucial hadn't finally worked for me.

With 24GB i got one KP, and now I'm on 16GB with >16h uptime, let's how this ends up.
When I end the tests and the work I'm doing I will call AppleCare and explain everything

EDIT: WELP, that's it, another one :(
This seems something more deep than bad RAM
As I stated earlier, as soon as I finish what I'm working, I'll call AppleCare. Will keep you informed

Yeah, I have to agree there is definitely something wrong there under the hood. I'm sure Apple will sort it out for you. Looking forward to hearing your good news.
