Got discount when ordering from Apple

I got 5% off everything when I placed my order over the phone last week.
They said it's their way of trying to even out the difference in the $.
So, I bought more stuff and spent about the same.
Made me feel good about my purchase and about Apple.

If the currency stays the same for a couple months, maybe Apple will consider whipping out the good old calculator widget and adjust the prices but if they don't, I might just consider calling and trying to get some offer. I will buy my next mac in late july probably.

I thought your stuff was more expensive, not only because you get screwed on prices (cars? hello?) but doesn't all your stuff have a built in, automatic VAT (Value added tax) of some kind? But you call it GST or something?

Is that built into the price? Maybe that reflects the difference.

No. If I buy a 2200 MBP, I pay 2200+8%+5%=2486$. The 8% is the Quebec tax. Alberta has none and others mainly have 7% or 8%. The tax everyone has is the 5% tax which they are slowly eliminating.

Product pricing corrections are done slowly, over the long term. It would serve Apple no good to adjust the price now, and have the USD rise back up in two months. Suddenly the pricing in Canada is way behind and if they raise it then people will freak out, just as they are freaking out now because the pricing hasn't dropped in Canada quickly enough.

There was a time not too long ago where it was actually a BETTER deal to buy a Mac in Canada than in the US, if the exchange rate was taken into consideration.

While I believe the Canadian pricing can come down some on Apple products, it will never be equal. Canada has import tariffs that raise the price on products, plus you have shipping costs also.

So, a bit lower over the long run as Apple sees Canada's dollar stay around par...yes. A knee jerk reaction to drop pricing today, only to possibly have to put it back up next month... not going to happen.

Really though, not a reason to get uptight about. Just the same ol' same old in international commerce.

Taxes are added onto the price of a product, unlike VAT which is built in.

Taxes are over and above the price you see on apples site. :(

Hmm, not sure when you mean.
I got my first PB in 2001 and I pd about $4500, while the American site priced out around $3200. (give or take and options added).
The last time the C$ was on PAR or better than PAR was in the early to mid-70s.

I always remember thinking about buy my electronics/computers in the States. But if you get caught??????
So I never did. Just pd the price. Glad it's come down so much in the past 5 or 6 years.
