no dual-channel 6g

Partly true. I am under the impression that the nVidia chipset runs the bottom 4GB in dual channel mode and the top 2GB on the second (4GB) DIMM in single channel mode.

But either way, the speed differential is minimal - on the order of 5% tops. And if you're hitting the hard drive for virtual memory swap, then going to 6GB and losing dual channel access is still going to be way faster than sitting at 4GB with dual channel access.

However for people that require more features than a standard user, whether it be for the sake of it or not, their options are now indeed limited.

The only option that disappeared was Express Card on the 15" MBP. The gains to "Professional" users of putting FireWire 800 and 8GB RAM capability more than makeup for that omission. I'll wager more users will benefit from those two additions that the loss of Express Card.

That said, it's too bad Apple couldn't have left the EC slot alone, and made an optional SD card reader that fit flush into that spot. That would have been an ideal solution...

It's just a name. In fact, their lineup is more like 6 consumer laptops, 1 professional laptop.

Anyone else thinks "pro" sounds stupid when used too often?

honestly if the 15" MBP isn't a 'pro' enough for you - then you don't need a laptop.

And how come you know what I need?

I often work with my laptop as a graphic design freelancer at various agencies. They often have bright, well lit offices and I prefer not to see myself but the dark photograph/layout/etc. I'm working on. Nope the 15" is not enough, but anyway I have a perfectly fine last gen. classic mbp I got for a very good price.

And please don't suggest "just buy a 17" then" or "you should use a 3k mac pro with a 2k eizo display anyway". I'm sorry, I don't have the money for that... ever heard of the cliche of the starving artist? ;)

Yup. And I'd hesitate to call the 17" MBP a professional laptop; it's just a desktop replacement, as are essentially all 17" laptops. Of course, a 15" or 13" can also be used as a desktop replacement for those inclined.

I've always thought it sounded stupid. Powerbook was far less condescending.

Well see it this way:

Pro as contrary to Con, the MacBook Pros dont have any Cons.

While the MacBook has, cracking issues :p

sarcasm aside, one glaring difference as well - ability to upgrade to 8 gig of ram...which quite a few actually care about. well, i know i sure as hell do.

the chipset in the UMB stated by ifixit.com can support 8gb of ram. ;)
