I'm going to be buying a MacBook Pro soon and given that an upgrade to 2GB is 270 I might as well install cheaper ram at a lower cost. I've never changed Ram in a computer before though- is it relatively simple? Are there any sites or guides that would explain how to do it for me? Thanks for any help...

No Worries dude. Just got back from BestBuy and installed 2gig in my macbook. I was a little unsure myself, but apple's website brings you through it nicely. Pretty simple. And I have to say that I can notice the difference between 1gig and 2gig, and I'm glad I did it. I will be using the book for more intensive apps, and I think the xtra mem will help. I didn't have to put it in on angle though. My computer recognizes it, and all is well as far as I know.

why the @*$% would you buy apples memory upgrade- what a waist if there are minumial advantages (I read there was a 5-10% difference with different brand memory side by side...).

Some people just don't know. Like myself. I thought I did all my research before buying the macbook, and upgraded to 1gig and paid 200 bucks at the apple store. Only to find a month later that changing the memory is common, and easy. I'm a little bummed, but I learned. I am happy for upgrading myself now.

For the newer machines Apple's rates for memory upgrades are fairly reasonable, so I would actually consider their upgrades instead. There are quite some perks you know, such as not having to worry about removing your third party installed components when you send it in for servicing.

Just for clarification. Why would one have to remove third party memory for servicing. I was under the impression that third party memory would not void warranty.

I think in general people worry about Apple not liking to service it with other's memory in there, they might take the easy road and say the memory is the problems, or, worst of all, if the computer is dead they might not switch it out when they send you a new computer.

Well, I just got back from BestBuy with my $99 memory (~$107 with tax).

Now all I need to do is buy my MacBook Pro...someday that will happen.

Sure, getting apple's ram can save you some hassel, but is $200 extra dollars REALLY worth the pain of possibly having to take out a ram stick if you need servicing?

give me $200 for something that takes 5-10 min to do, not to mention if you never have to send in for service

I just purchased this ram and wow I can really notice the difference. I took it to this tech guy I know to install and he did for free(because my pc I built had an hd failure was in for repairs).

I am still running 512 MB of ram on my intel iMac. Im sure this will be a huge boost...Im going out to buy it tomorrow. I regret not getting it earlier when prices were so cheap on newegg. Oh well...this RAM works with the iMacs right?

Got home from work to find my two gigs of RAM sitting in the mailbox! Never figured Best Buy would get it here in less than three days. Opened up my MacBook, popped the two DIMMs in, closed it up and now I've got two gigs of RAM. Easiest install I've ever done as far as RAM goes. Take out the battery, remove three screws, pop out old RAM, put new ones in, close it all back up. Took me 5 mins tops.

And oh boy this thing is wonderful now. This is the most memory I've had in a computer. My old iBook had 1.25 gigs and this baby with two gigs is simply amazing. I can't wait to do some Photoshop work tomorrow!

Just wondering...why would you buy two 512 mb strips for $90+shipping when you could have a 1 gig strip for $99+tax??

He swallowed the bit about matched pairs too heavily

They are matched pairs. 2x512MB will be a bit faster than 1x1GB. If you never plan on putting more than 1GB in then this is the way to go.

Although would 2x512MB be faster than 1x1GB+1x256MB?

If he's got 2x 256 strips in there now, better off going with a 1 gig and a 256 mb. 1.25 gigs unmatched is gonna be better than 1 gig matched.

I don't really understand Apple's position on this. They push it heavily on the MacBook, only selling RAM in the MB in matched pairs. But in the MBP they sell single chips? I know it is not required but it helps.

This was a good enough deal I didn't pass it up even though I am awaiting the information on Monday's pre Photokina Apple conference. So, we'll see, but thanks for posting this information! Always good to get buying tips!

Damn! I can't believe I was so slow on this. The deal is now over... However, at New Egg, there are a few $100 (ish) options:

A-Data: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820211031
Twin Mos:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820218096

There are also some, for these elevated RAM price days, decent buys in the $120 range for better names (Kingston, Corsair etc).

yt

I need some help guys. Just got a 2.0mhz white Macbook and want to upgrade to 1gb for the RAM. I don't mind paying $100-120 per stick, but the RAM listed above is not marked as working with Macs. Even the Corsair that everyone got from Bestbuy above, is the VALUE SELECT RAM and when you go to the Corsair site, they say that only the RAM picked through their ram configurator will be guaranteed to work and the VALUE SELECT does not match up with the Macbook. Even on Newegg, the VS has a bunch of people with Macs saying it does not work in their Macbooks. Any idea what is up?

Will the cheap stuff that is the same pin/speed work or not? It is odd that most manufacturers won't give a cheaper option in their memory configurators on their sites. Any idea's?
