if my partner wants in to my phone he need only ask. =)

If you have secrecy and stuff so important you don't share with each other that it creates paranoia and suspicion that they would spy on you then you've far bigger issues than just a phone.

It will be able to hold information on multiple prints – I'd imagine 10 at the minimum. For other people who frequenty share your device I very much doubt that you couldn't get them to scan one of their fingers as if it were your own. And I doubt that the "slide to unlock" text will go away. Even with the fingerprint scanning for unlock active a password could be used, which you can give to anyone you'd like without giving up any information they could use to make payments.

Wow, I think that the fingerprint scanner will be an option like the pass that you can put now. And while sleeping you will feel someone grabbing your hand and so on. Overly attached girlfriend problems :D

If someone starts messing with the part of your body with one of the most nerve endings and you don't wake up, I think the issue maybe doctorworthy ;)

You guys would wake up if someone put a phone on your fingertip?

I think you're the ones needing a doctor.

I'm not agreeing with the paranoid types around here, but I'm pretty sure that a normal person doesn't wake up any time something lightly touches their fingertip. Certainly not during the deepest part of the sleep cycle. For instance, haven't you heard of the old prank where you put someone's hand in warm water while they're asleep?

I guess it depends on how much pressure the sensor requires.

Well OP, just don't put your $10 million swiss bank account information on the phone.

to all the non-foreveraloners on here, what if your significant other wants to get into your phone?

easy.. wait for you to sleep and then use your thumb to gain access.

Ok, if you are living with someone and share keys to the house, they already have access to a lot more of your confidential information than your phone. They could steal anything while you are asleep.

Financial statements, credit cards, car keys, tax returns, passports, social security cards, dogs, cats, and on and on. Having any of that stuff stolen is usually a lot worse than stuff on a phone being looked at.

Personally I'd be really upset if I woke up and found my Labrador missing, but its just silly to be paranoid about that. I'm not married to the NSA for heavens sakes.

My first thought was the difficulty my SO would have when I wanted her to use my phone. It's not a privacy concern between us.

In any case it's easier to look over someone's shoulder when they enter their pass code.

We use the same kinda sensor at work, and whilst I was being slightly hyperbolic - it is still pretty obvious.

Here's another thing nobody seems to have considered so far. Imagine the only way to unlock you device would be through the fingerprint scanner, and ahortly after setting it up you lose both hands due to a tragic accident involving mad squirrels. Then how would you ever unlock your phone again, let alone use it at all?!?!11/ maybe Apple is smart and it doubles as a nose scanner...but still, the thought alone makes me shiver

Even if you had a password lock, you still wouldn't be able to unlock your phone. You could use your nose, I suppose - but hardly practical.

First, it's not overlooked. This is at least the 3rd time I've seen this exact scenario brought up.

Second, you don't have to use the fingerprint scanner. I'm sure you'll still be able to choose to use a passcode.

Third, as others have said, your relationship and trust issues aren't Apple's problem.

I'm also certain that if a person plans on drinking with people they can't trust or if they have things on their phone they don't want their friends to see they can disable the scanner as a precaution. Also, we can get password protected apps to hide incriminating data...free none-the-less.

Actually, the OP has posted a scenario that reflects what my ex would've done….or I should say tried, since I'm a very light sleeper! Just a tad bit of insecurity and paranoia going on….

My wife knows all my pass codes and I knows hers. Not once in my 10 year marriage have I ever felt the need to look at anything of hers at all. No trust in your marriage, that's not Apples fault, that's your own.

inb4 "but then there's no trust.. blah blah blah"

dude, if your wife is cutting off your thumb to gain access, you got bigger problems than phone snooping...

Seriously, just suck your thumb. It will put you to sleep and protect your valuable data.

No, really seriously. Sleep with your phone in your shorts. You should wake up when she goes to get it. And if you set the phone to vibrate, you smile every time you get a call. :D

No, really, seriously serious this time: Buy a droid. She'll leave you and then, problem solved!...

The new finger print scanner will be so advanced, it will actually know when you're awake or sleeping and only activate when you're awake.

They still haven't figured out how to stop it from working if your finger has been removed from your body and your gf just uses it whenever she wants. They're working on it, though.

Not a problem at all, I'm already going to turn on both FP scanner and passcode, and when they have a retina scan, I'll turn that sucker on too:D

If you're sleeping at work it's probably not a deep sleep. When you were a kid, didn't the tooth fairy ever take a tooth and slip some money right under your head without waking you? :p

what's the point buying fingerprint identity sensor? if the sensor cant figure out?

again how you gonna unlock 5s if your finger got slightly cut via sharp paper, knife etc...

You can add more than one finger print to the phone if one does not work, try another. :D

If you're married I don't see the issue with your other seeing your device. Not going to debate on that though.

Because I have law firm stuff on my phone, my wife is not allowed to see the stuff I have on my device, though she doesn't concern herself such that she would want to nor attempt some spy stuff and try to gain access... :D

She says she does admit and gets curious sometimes, but that's only because she wants to hear the crazy stories some of my clients have.

You can swipe/passcode to get in to the phone.

Or you can press/fingerprint to get in to the phone.

No problem here, move along folks.

Here is the answer

In media demos of the FP feature it was stated that you can scan multiple fingers and independently name them. Meaning that you can have multiple people scan fingers and identify the person associated with the finger.

This also enables you to delete a 'person' (set of fingers) from the phone when your wife kicks you out ;-)

Problem solved. Move along.

TS, I guess your significant other already has lifted prints of your fingers at the ready for paperwork anyways  :p
