One space. The first time I heard of anyone doing anything different was when I opened this topic.

I've been typing two spaces after a period since I learned the fine art of touch-typing in 1976. I see no reason to change this, especially as LawyerBoss likes her correspondence and legal documents to have two spaces after a period.

Two. Back when I first learned to type, that was standard. Now I guess either is considered ok, but I'm so used to two spaces so I just continue to do it like that.

That is because vBulletin only allows one space. I personally only put one space. But I wish that if I hit it twice it would make a period like on the iPhone. :)

Not talking to you jmann per se, but...
Earlier in the thread it has been determined that it is in fact the web browsers that are changing the duel spaces to one, not vBulletin.

It seems the two space practice is an american thing, I still do it. I also noticed it being omitted by MacRumors months ago...

A four-point ellipsis? Surely they mean three?

A four-point ellipsis comes at the end of a sentence; a three-point ellipsis does not complete a sentence.

Examples:

I've always loved peanut butter and jelly. My brother, on the other hand...

or

Seems like no matter how hard I try, I can never get the stamp on the envelope straight. Maybe I should use a metering machine....

But on the topic, I learned way back in 8th grade that two spaces follow a period, exclamation point, question mark, or colon; and a single space after a period or semicolon. I've been doing it ever since and don't see any need to change - nothing looks unusual to me when I type a letter or memo.

In fact, before this thread I've never heard of doing it any differently, not even after 5 years of undergrad and 3 years of graduate school, or 15 years in the workforce. Oh well, I learn something every day *shrug*

Okay, so on that note, should commas and periods go inside or outside quotation marks? Obviously, in the instance of a quote, any commas or periods should be inside the quotation marks:

e.g. Bill looked at us and said, "Hey guys, I'm going to the store."

However, I'm one to believe that when using quotes to indicate a name or something specific, it is more appropriate to put the quotes before the punctuation:

e.g. After going into the "Apple menu", select "System Preferences".

See the difference?

Two spaces were only ever appropriate on a typewriter. In all typesetting that came before and after the typewriter, one space is the correct choice. The problem is so many of us learned to type on a typewriter, and old habits die hard. But die they must! :D
