Flash in Safari is eating up your RAM, dude. Whatever you're running...kill Safari.

i switched to firefox why are there still 5gb being used?

Try upgrading flash. For a while apple shipped their computers with older version of flash that was a memory hog. Not 100% if that'll help.

Sort by "Real Memory" to see where the RAM goes to. Just know, that 256MB is used by the Intel HD IGP.

Not 256, it's actually 512MB being used by the iGP

Edit: As for the OP i would try clearing out all caches both system and user...

Only peripherally related, and I apologize.

Why does the 64 bit kernel use like 3x the memory from the 32 bit kernel?

As for the OPs slowness. Over 6 GB of RAM usage without a VM or any memory hungry audio/video apps does seem odd. However, with over 2GB free, I wouldn't think this would cause any speed issues. I can notice some beach-balling if Free RAM is around 10MB, but I wouldn't think using a lot provided there is still a lot free should affect speed.

Safari is my browser of choice, but it is a memory hog, along with Flash, and both are bad about releasing memory. I tend to quit Safari every now and again and relaunch it to free up memory.

Why 5GB of RAM was still being used when the OP was using Firefox is a mystery. Still wouldn't explain the slowness, though, I don't think.

Nothing to worry about.

Wired: Wired memory contains information that must always stay in RAM
Active: Active memory that contains information that is actively being used.
Inactive: Inactive memory contains information that is not actively being used. Leaving this information in RAM is to your advantage if you (or a client of your computer) come back to it later.

You have a LOT of free RAM. Don't worry about Inactive RAM. OS X is smart enough to know what to do with your RAM.

As simsaladimbamba said, open Disk Utility and check your hard drive's S.M.A.R.T status.

I dont know whats going on but the color wheel keeps appearing constantly when using safari and other applications which seems weird to me having these specs. I also restored it with time machine with the backup from my old computer. Might it be some malware or something? Thanks

What old computer did you restore from? Mac OS 10.6.6 that was installed on it has drivers for the Sandy Bridge chipset. Did you overwrite it? My 2011 MBP 2.2 with 8 gb of Crucial memory screams!
