...Which is funny, cause isn't there a new version already slated for Leopard? I'm guessing the 10.5 version will allow the app to play Blu-Ray and HD-DVD?

you wish.

Uh, it already DOES play HD discs.

Look in the very, very lower right. You have to play them off the hard drive since there isn't any hardware in a Mac that can play discs, but the software itself is ready.

I really hope it fixes the bloody volume issue on my PowerBook where it slowly increases the volume one increment at a time whilst making a ticking noise regardless of how fast I push it until some sound plays through the system to free it up again. Very annoying.

Oh and the first person to re-open the whole 10.4.10 issue again gets a chair broken across their teeth :)

What kind of chair would you like? It seems that you've started it. :D

Eeek. They're touching USB again. I expect another round of kernel panics coming from hot plug issues.

Good. I've been having a ton of freeze ups on my MBP when it comes to USB. USB is not happy on the MBP. I have to imagine part of the reason is because so much of the internal hardware is running across USB. :(

Okay, they can fix the Intel version and leave the PowerPC version alone. I really don't want to go through any long running hard drive fixes after the kernel panics.

They're getting to the point that they're going to be able to start applying performance fixes, too. Hopefully, Tiger will become a lot faster, finally.

Aah USB...

*crossing fingers*

My Intel iMac (still feels weird typing it, although demoing Far Cry last night made me glad that my iMac G5 totally gave up the ghost) has had a number of USB-related problems. It shipped with 10.4.4, in which the keyboard and mouse would freeze fairly frequently. Updating to 10.4.7 has fixed this in Mac OS X, but XP still exhibits these same problems.

I've heard that buying a powered USB hub will fix these problems...but damn if I'm not a cheap bastard ;-).

Erm... if it works in Tiger but not XP... you need an update to BootCamp and not Tiger (or a firmware update). Because BootCamp isn't likely to be included in the Tiger update, and nothing that changes in Tiger effects you while you're in Windows.... :(

But by the way, do you have a thread on this issue? Are your kb/mouse wired or BT?

Java applets? Maybe the Safari update will help.... though I think it's more of a Java problem... 'cause I can't go to any page with Java and not crash. I have it disabled for now. I'm on 10.4.7.

Sounds as though you have other problems since other people use Java applets daily.

I know - it's a shot in the dark. It's a wired apple keyboard w/a mighty mouse. I've read a few entries in apple's official discussion forums about it, in the Boot Camp section, as well as across the mac web. There are a number of supposed fixes, none of which have really worked for me. It's odd - XP chimes a lot when it's going on, as though the USB cable is being pulled from the computer and then reinserted. I've yet to try a different keyboard/mouse combination, or another hub, although I've heard a hub can help. Oh well, they're cheap, and might come in handy anyway.

Would the big size of the updates be due to all the debug stuff they put in for developers? After it's fixed they take out the debug routines and the size drops quite a lot...

Intel is newer and thus requires a bit more work.

A Universal application is not double the size, it's not two copies of everything - one for PPC and one for Intel. A Universal application includes a PPC version of the binary and an Intel version of the binary, the resources remain common, therefore a Universal app is only very slightly bigger than a PPC-only app. Binaries aren't all that big, it's all the resources and stuff that make up the app that take up the most room.

On the other hand, bug fixes are (almost) always with the binary, not the surrounding resources.

That would be my guess (not for the entire OS, but I would suspect that certain subsystems do contain debugging information still), as well as my guess for the difference in size on Intel vs PPC (because PPC code sure as hell ain't smaller than x86 code, but the debug info can have a radical effect on the build especially if Apple's having the same DWARF debug info problems others have reported on Intel, meaning they're shipping STABS-based debuggables where needed for Intel and DWARF where needed for PPC).

Im only interested in Safari. Apple needs to address the RAM issue, Safari is the fastest browser for me out there and i've tried most if not all BUT the memory issue still annoys me as i have to quit/reset safari at least once a day. Not ideal.

i hope with the new login window, you can log off but still have apps running in the background so no one has access to your computer...that's the one feature i like about XP

True. I use iAlertu (googel it, it's free). It lets me lock my Macbook with the remote like I lock the car. Even makes the sound and takes a photo of you if you try to steal the computer (sudden motion sensor). So your computer is locked but the apps are still running.

Another app is Sizzling Keys. You can control itunes with it and it locks the screen just like XP with apps still running all you need to do is press Cmd+L (well in my case that is)

hrm I wonder if this upcoming release will fix my whining issue with my macbook under osx. It would be so nice not to have to run macbook pro. Btw wine doesnt exist under xp when i tried it out for a bit. Anouther thing that points me to belive they are working on that is the fact that they are working on usb because I was able to replace iofamilyusb or whatever its called with an older version and that stoped the wine as well for awhile till i decided to reinstall osx.

Isn't it weird that it says HD DVD and not Blu Ray since Apple is a BluRay member?

Apple support both formats - they're just on the Blu-Ray board of directors.
