So glad this is not just me. Mine has been all jacked up using my 1920x1200 external in clamshell. Same problems as described above. Hopefully this will get dealt with right away. I thought I was sitting pretty after updating the mini, so I did the laptop soon after.

I am afraid to even plug in my external now...

When i did the graphics update, i did it with external LaCie hard drive and external monitor connected. I wonder if that's why it got messed up? The test is to disconnect and then try again but...NO WAY. System is great now with 10.5.2 and w/out the graphics update.......

Odd

This was working fine for me yesterday during the day. Last night I unhooked my external display used as a conventional laptop and then powered down. When I restarted today and tried to hook up my external monitor the settings had been lost and the monitor was not mirroring.

That fixed, I hooked my monitor entered sleep mode after mirroring and when I tried waking from sleep - nothing. MBP is waking up and then keeps trying to wake up with no information going to the display.

My external display is 1280x1024, I would be interested to hear if any of you are still having this problem.

Oh forgot to say, I downloaded the combo update and not from software update I then downloaded the graphics update.

ya... my MBP SR just doesn't like waking up. It hangs with the beachball at the unlock screen, without an unlock window. stupid.

Were people with this problem using the external as the primary display (menu and dock) when installing the update? Perhaps try switching back to the laptop as the primary display, disconnect the external, and reconnect then see if it will detect it properly? Is there a preference file that can be trashed?

My issue is very slow startup after update

I am using a Samsung external monitor with my MBP as an extension of my primary display. Before the upgrade, startup time was the same regardless of whether the external display was attached or not.

After the combo upgrade, startup will hang forever with the external display plugged in. Unplugged, startup appears normal.

I've never used clamshell mode, but I will see if I have the same issues as others do in that mode.

MBP display problems

I am having the same problem. I try to startup in Clamshell mode which before 10.5.2 sent the video signal to my external Viewsonic VX2025wm. After 10.5.2 and the MBP tries to send it external but ends up going back to sleep.

Don't they check this stuff before they send it out?

Apple is getting to be like Microsoft...

That's NOT good.

I imagine that re-installing Leopard, 10.5.1 and 10.5.2 but without the graphics updates should fix this. Has anyone tried ? It seems like a bit of a pain.

Guy

I havent had any issues with clamshell and external since the first time. I have NOT updated the graphics firmware or whatever. Who else updated 10.5.2 but did not update the graphic?

I updated to 10.5.2 as it came out 2 weeks ago. I immediately had the external monitor issue. A few minutes after, Apple released the graphic update and the issue was still there. In my case, the issue does not come from the graphic update.

Reinstalled Leopard

I reinstalled Leopard, ran system update on all the updates, updated to 10.5.2, but did NOT install either graphics update.

The problem has gone away !

I can now operate in clamshell mode, and plug the external monitor in and out as before with no strange behaviour.

This is a Macbook Pro 2.4GHz

I just encountered this problem for the first time today
i've been using 10.5.2 for a month already - strange

I found a solution on another forum.

Select restart. Close your lid on your MacBookPro. Let it reboot with the lid closed. It opens into and remembers my NEC MultiSync 90X and all its resolution settings.

What I do is I start the MBP without my external monitor connected. Once it's up and running, I plug the monitor in and it works fine. Before shutting down the notebook, I have to unplug the monitor. It's more complicated than before...but at least it works.

Works fine for me, I just have to make sure my computer is plugged in to the wall. If it isn't, it doesn't work.

So its been over a month and this issue is not yet sorted out?
All I want to do is to be able to plug in my DVI to RCA/SVid converter then plug in a RCA cable and hook up my MBP to a TV and watch a movie.

I have tried to do the restart, plug in external, close lid.... none of those methods work for me. I installed the graphic update yesterday, hoping it would sort this out, but no change. When I click detect displays it just flashes some scribbles across the screen for 1/2 a second then nothing.

So how are people getting around this? Why can't Apple issue a fix for this?

My fix is just not to install the Leopard graphics update (which is there everytime I do an update!!). Not an elegant solution, but i haven't had any problems.

Ok, I'm getting tired of this MBP display problem

What is the best way to get back to 10.5.2 WITHOUT this freaking Leopard Graphics Update that is screwing up everyone's laptops?

This is a travesty that a function SO entwined with the basic functionality of this laptop was not properly tested and has ruined the experience of a number of us Apple supporters - WITHOUT ANY RESPONSE FROM APPLE.

I'm steamed.

Brother I am with you, 100%. This is insane that it has gone on this long and no response from Apple. What are they doing??? So annoying! I mean I'm just pissed that I can't watch movies on tv, but what about people that can't do presentations with projectors?

Just did an archive install back to 1.5.0 and the problem persisted. I kept all my data and network settings. Do I have to do a clean install?

i did an archive install and then updated everything but the Leopard graphics update and everything was ok. I'm surprised this didn't work in your case.

Hmm. I think this bug just bit me.

I have a Mac Mini G4 and an iMac G5 connected to a Samsung LCD TV through a Belkin KVM switch. Pre-update, both detected the TV absolutely fine with Display Preferences showing 'SAMSUNG' in the title bar and listing the panel's native resolution.

Now, initially I had no problems at all even after the Leopard/Graphics updates. Right up until last night, in fact. Last night we had a 20 minute power cut. Since then, both machines show the TV as a VGA Display, with a bunch of generic resolutions listed.

Nether machine had actually been powered-off since the update. A reboot perhaps, but never a power-off. I wonder if this is a bug that only takes hold during some low-level initialisation. I know a reboot doesn't thoroughly reinitialise the graphics hardware.

Fingers crossed that this is fixed soon. I'll file a report at bugreport.apple.com to see if it gets marked as a duplicate or otherwise.

well I feel like a complete ass... I went out and bought a new DVI adapter and low and behold it worked fine... guess my adaptor died on me.

Sorry for all the negative vibes Apple

Hallelujah! Free at last! Free at last! EFI 1.5 works!!

I have come down from the mountain of despair that was called Leopard Graphics Update. Lo, an angel of the Steve came to me in a dream with a bouncing icon that said "download this" - an EFI 1.5 update for my severely disabled MacBook Pro.

I once was blind, but NOW I SEE! After sweating out the arcane rituals of updating the firmware, I have been SAVED! Now, my MBP is AWARE of my external monitor and, in a blinding flash I see ... what is that?.... ICONS! BACKGROUNDS!

I rush to the menu bar and DETECT DISPLAYS and, Glory to Steve, I see my Viewsonic VX2025WM's name and display capabilities. No longer am I lost in the depths of despair and mirrored MBP displays! I can clamshell my MBP and it WORKS!!!!!

Hallelujah!! Free at last! Free at last!

Thank you, Steve.

All my external display issues are resolved. There is peace in my mind again. I am content.
