Ive got a mac pro 2.66ghz first generation, 2 X geforce 7300 GT and 2gb of ram nd 2X250gb RAID0. I installed the 10.5.1 combo update and then the 10.5.2 combo update. The translucent menu bar option of turning it off/on in the desktop setting is NOT there.

I can only turn off the translucence using Onyx (which is wrong because i shouldnt need to use 3rd party apps for a system based feature).

If a MP doesnt have the option then it sounds like an install issue. have you guys tried downloading the 10.5.2 combo update from Apple's Support downloads page and installing again?

I have the exact same issue on my iBook G4 1.42 GHz. I tried the Combo but it didn't solve the issue.

dotMac sync

Hey, I'm on a Core Image-supported (hardware-accelerated) 12-inch iBook G4 1.33 GHz. After the 10.5.2 update through Software Update, I also don't have the option to turn off menu bar translucency in Desktop/Screen Saver System Preferences.

However, I am able to turn off the translucency on my iBook by synchronizing my System Preferences through dotMac on my user account of my wife's MacBook (which successfully got the menu bar translucency option after updating to 10.5.2).

That is, to toggle menu bar translucency on my iBook, I first have to make the selection on my wife's computer, synchronize system preferences through dotMac on my wife's computer, and then synchronize dotMac on my iBook.

Not so practical, but it demonstrates that my iBook menu bar is at least "capable" of losing its translucency...and supports the report that Apple will fix this in the next update.

joekix the issue here is that iBook G4s (and other later model macs) that have core image supported graphics cards and translucent menu bars in 10.5, are lacking the option to switch to a solid menu bar in the Desktop/Screen Saver control panel.

This is clearly a software bug (perhaps some sort of identifier in the OS is botched *shrug*).

for those who don't have a translucent bar, did you read this? i have a powerbook and this explains why i don't have a translucent menu bar.

guys the fix is simply to take out the extra graphic card if you dont need it... I had gotten my double vid card setup cuz at first I didnt realize i could have 2 displays on the same card so it was a waste for me anyway. Ripped the extra unused vid card out and... boom, theres the option

this dbl vid card setup on the mac pro i have has been problems since the start (anyone else originally get the occasional "monitor not coming out of sleep mode problem") yea, that was pci express bus speed related which I ended up fixing with the expansion slot utility.

something is up with the setup really, and for future purchases im going to be a bit more careful with how "customized" i set up my BTO orders.

Starting to think this is a bug on these video cards. But only seems to effect some video cards. I wonder if the problem is with certain revisions with these cards?

Same problem here.

Running 12" iBook 1.33 GHz PowerPC G4 w/ 1.5GB of memory

I had a translucent menu bar before 10.5.2 and with the update I still have a translucent menu bar, but NO option to turn it off under System Pref->Desktop.

wow

I have the same exact specs as you and I'm getting the same results. No option to turn off the translucent.

just found this thread and thought I'd chime in.

I'm having the same issue after updating to 10.5.2. I still have a translucent menubar, but I don't have the option to en/disable it in my desktop system preferences. I was just assuming this was an issue with multiple monitors, because the only other people I've talked to have just a single monitor and have the option. I have 3 monitors and it's not there.

Here's a screenshot of my settings windows:

For reference, I'm running an octo-core Mac Pro

I don't want to disable the translucency, so it's not a big deal to me... but it's something that needs to be functional since it's a "feature" now. I wish they'd also give the option to bring translucency back to the menus though... it makes no sense to have opaque menus with a see-through menubar. I loved the decreased opacity in them and now they've gone and removed it.. ugh...

I'm also now having issues with my wireless signal dropping where I never had the problem before the update, but that's another issue altogether.

an ongoing problem

its a plist file somewhere deep in the system that controls the menu bar. this file was easily editable early on with people hacking it with various leopard tweaking tools. The particular file(s) need to be the same as they were on a default installation to get your tick box back.

unfortunately for you reading this i cannot provide a fix, but rest assured, apple will eventually release an update (10.5.3 as it is not a stability / security issue) that will reset the file(s) to their defaults (as there is no legitimate reason for them to be changed) but if anyone could provide a lovely terminal string to fix it in one fell swoop, you will be the first on the net (to my knowledge) to do so

I have an iBook G4 1.33 which has a translucent menu bar but the option to en/disable it in my desktop system preferences is still missing after the 10.5.4 update.

Any info yet to fix this?

Wow, people are still having this issue!? I was having it on my aging Powermac Quicksilver but since I sold that, my Macbook has been fine. But a Mac Pro! Come on Apple, get this straight .4, and still not solved. Tisk, tisk.

I posted this over at Apple Discussions

and was directed to a third party app Onyx
and after installing go to

Parameters -> Finder and there your can adjust the menu bar transparency to opaque.

The Option in system preferences desktop is still missing but at least I have option to change between opaque and transparent.
