Damit, this is my first Mac and it has been nothing but problem after problem. Now I'm getting an error in Time Machine it's the error "Unable to complete backup. an error occurred while linking files on the backup volume." When I look at the console it says "Backup failed with error: 12."

I was told that Time Machine is a reliable backup and I could just set it up and forget about it.

Anyway, dose anyone know a fix for this problem, or at least what these error's actually mean so I might be able to fix it.

EDIT: Thank you to the guy at Apple that suggested my TM data may be bad on the backup drive. I deleted the backup file and everything works again.

time machine failures

I just bought a new SATA external 1TB HD to use as my backup for my MBP and I formatted the disk and partitioned it, but not only can't I use it for backups because of this issue. It also screws up my 2nd partition I use for storing my photos saying that:

Anyone have an idea what's going on?

Do you mean that you deleted your entire backup, or are you talking about some other file?

I have been using TM for 16 months without any issues and just got the "error occurred while linking files" last night for the first time. I'm still experimenting to see how it can be avoided.

I guess wiping out my 16 months of backups would be one option, but that kind of defeats the purpose of Time Machine.

I was getting the "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while linking files on the backup volume" message.

It finally went away when I changed the backup drive to another disk and immediately disabled new backups, I then switched back to my regular backup disk. It worked! Finally no more error messages, after trying many other things that didn't work.

No idea why that worked or what caused the problem to begin with.

I got rid of this error by repairing my TM disk. The repair said that it fixed some problem with links. I don't know how the filesystem could have gotten crufty, but it seems like TM is working OK now.
