I finally got my problem fixed!! I read a number of posts talking about the relationship between the 10.5.7 problems and the presence of an external drive when the update was done. I didn't have an external drive hooked up when I did the update but still had the problems. I did, however, have a USB hub plugged into my iMac. When I unplugged it my problems went away. When I would plug it back in the problems returned. So I plugged it in and eliminated the USB plugs in the hub one at a time and found that I had a D-link for a bluetooth wireless mouse that was either bad or incompatibale. Either way when I removed it everything was fine. I could shut down and restart, etc. with no spinning beach ball. Not sure if this will help anyone but check it out and see.

Success

I have successfully installed this update with -0- problems on my Imac. This is how i did it, for what it's worth
1) Repaired permissions
2) Verified disc
3) Backed up
4) D/l Combo Update
http://support.apple.com/downloads/Mac_OS_X_10_5_7_Combo_Update
5) disconnected my peripherals (all usb and firewire)
6) Installed update
7) Repaired permissions
8) Backed up
Absolutely -0- problems and my Imac is running a tad faster.
If this helps anyone I'll be happy.

I switched back from Safari 4 beta to 3. Cleared the user cache, reindexed Spotlight, it seems to work better now. No idea what the problem might have been.

...still experiencing the spinning beach balls of death. they appear after waking from sleep, and keep me from performing a clean shutdown or restart of my system. have deleted the various plist files i saw in other posts, to no avail. finally spoke to an apple product specialist tonight. he had me delete a couple of cache directories. since my symptoms are not immediately reproducible i'm going to hold out for a couple of days to see if things have improved. will provide updates if there's anything exciting discovered. hoping to share good news shortly.

24hrs in, and all is well. No SBBOD (so far). It appears that clearing my cache directories may have been the culprit. I'll wait a couple of more days before claiming victory, but pleased at this point.
