The 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPads that Apple is expected to debut at a March event aren't expected to ship until May or June, supply chain sources tell DigiTimes. An entry-level 9.7-inch iPad, however, is expected to ship within close proximity of the March event.

In January, DigiTimes reported that the 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPads were expected to enter mass production in the Q2 of 2017 while the 9.7-inch iPad would enter mass production in Q1 2017. The potential release dates partly line up with a recent report from Mac Otakara, which said the 10.5-inch iPad may not be ready to ship until May. However, that report said the three other iPad models rumored to debut at the March event, new 7.9-inch, 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPads, are expected to ship in March.

12.9-inch iPad shipments have been drying up around the world in recent weeks, slipping to shipping estimates of 2-3 weeks in the United States, Canada, Australia, France, Germany and Japan. While increasing shipping times are a sign of an impending refresh, in this case it seems to be a supply issue.

During Apple's latest earning call, CEO Tim Cook said that the company underestimated iPad demand in the past quarter and had an issue with one of its suppliers. Cook said the issue would probably not be resolved this quarter, likely leading to shriveling 12.9-inch iPad stock. Similarly, the supply issue could keep the refreshed 12.9-inch iPad from shipping before May.

The new 10.5-inch model is expected to be the flagship model in Apple's new iPad lineup, sporting an edge-to-edge display on the same footprint as the current 9.7-inch iPad. Alongside new iPads at a March event, Apple is also expected to debut a 128 GB iPhone SE and red iPhone 7 and 7 Plus color variations.

[doublepost=1487989770][/doublepost]I think having these iPads come out in May or June would be a good thing. It would be the first time that new high school or college grads might get a current iPad as a graduation present. Dads might get them as a present for Father's Day and those going off to college in August would be able to go to school with the latest iPad tech from Apple. I think the Apple Quarter 4 of its fiscal year could be a very good one.

Tim seriously focus on your products and stop playing Apple's version of celebrity big brother winner.

It's not s Mac Pro.....you are announcing and launching 2-3 months later....it's an iPad....your bread and butter. Stop making political statements and make some business statements to your teams to get their act together and hit delivery timelines .

do both, Tim!

Yeah I doubt that highly. Apple has barely been bothered spending time on iOS for iPads.

they have 12,000 employees moving over the next 6 months.
12,000 emploees work on more than one product.

Couldn't agree more. Apple announces product X and product y, yet they'll make about 1000 units each for worldwide sales and customers then wait months to get a back order and Apple will call it a runaway success launch.

sure they make a 1000 units worldwide and that squares away with their revenues and sales numbers right? i assume your comment was just sarcasm and not a real conclusion.

WWDC is primarily software/Developer based.

That hasn't stop Apple announcing hardware though on the past and there is nothing to suggest they won't do it again. Announcing the WWDC 2017 so early as they did this year should be just one of the hints that there won't be any March event. But of course this is just a theory and I could be wrong.

And? Doesn't change the fact that their iPad efforts after maybe the iPad 2 came out have been lazy, especially in terms of software.

You are correct, they have announced hardware in the past during WWDC, But that's become a thing of the past and is more rare than not. Also, the March keynote and WWDC conference have no correlation with each other. One the reasons I think they announced WWDC early is primarily because of scheduling conflicts in the amount of masses of people that they accustom too.

But I'm confident about the March KeyNote . It only makes sense, in announcing the anniversary of the iPhone SE to larger storage, iPad announcements (Rather they debut or not), Watch accessories updates, etc. From a consumer standpoint, it wouldn't make sense for Apple to skip the keynote or try to fit all of These hardware updates in with WWDC. I don't see any of that happening. From all the recent reports, I do believe there will be a keynote in March. Likely announced somewhere around the 7th through the 10th.

The iPad mini doesn't make sense anymore with the increasing sizes of the phones.

Well to you at least. Personally my two minis are essential to my jury-rigged whole home system. They are the perfect solution as an all-in-one: remote control, streamcast video to TV device, reader. I could do all this with my iPhone but I don't want to. Having a device in each room is more convenience for me and I don't have to worry if my Phone has enough juice. Also my iPhone is 4.7" small.

Different strokes for different folks. Not every product is going to make sense for everyone's lifestyle. The 13" is way more iPad than I'd ever want. It works for others. OTOH if Apple pushed out a 10" device and kept the 9.7" that would create consumer confusion and too many unnecessary choices.

What doesn't make sense is why Apple orphans so many of its products like a mother Panda. iPad mini + ATV + HomeKit education campaign is natural. But then again Apple doesn't do much with any of these products.

I also believe the March keynote will be held in March. ;)

Or... the march event could be on May Day :D

Well, it makes me feel better about picking up an apple refurb pro 12.9. I love it and I'll use it for longer.

But if they upgrade these beasts and make screen and pen improvements, I'm totally on board for a new model. My brother is waiting in the wings to pick up mine at a discount.

The one thing I want to see is improvements to the display. It's gorgeous so far, but sometimes I notice ghosting. It's not terrible, and it's not noticeable everywhere. A site where I see ghosting is DaringFireball.com - grey site with white text. There is a pretty long trail on that text when I scroll that site.

It's a tad annoying but not a deal breaker. Make that screen better, make it lighter, and I'm so sold on it!

I wonder how thin it will be.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab S2 is only 5.6 mm and it was released in 2015.

It's about time that Apple makes a really thin tablet, like 3 mm.

I get Apple build bigger sized iOS device, just like every other product, then backtracks and fills in the missing pieces with slightly smaller screens. but 3 months sounds right....

At least someone up there is being honest,, and not stating "2 weeks" and then comming out with "delays" ...

The 10.5 inch iPad Pro doesn't seem like much of an upgrade over the 9.7 inch, besides having an edge to edge screen and being less than an inch bigger.

As discussed by Juli Clover (https://www.macrumors.com/2017/01/12/10-5-inch-ipad-pro-mathematical-argument/). Mathematically the new 10.5" iPad may have the same resolution as the 12.9" iPad Pro with the same PPI as the iPad Mini and, non Plus, iPhones.

This would give a much clearer image and, since this would be driven by a A10+ CPU, it hints at a 326PPI 12.9" iPad Pro within a few years.

If the ipads truly will be announced in March, why no part leaks yet. Seems odd. Me thinks rumors about delays are true. Apple hasn't even announced an event for March yet. So I'm not going to hold my breath.

Like with the retina trend that came in all devices, now the improved speakers and P3 display that came almost in all devices, i think the shrink in bezels started with the MBP, next is the ipad, probably the imac (with also improved speakers and bezels) and in sept with the new iphone 8

I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has pointed out that some people will always need a truck. You guys crack me up! BTW, saw an RX2 Ford F150 SPORT TRUCK today. Yeah, baby!!!

I want a thinner iPad Pro 12.9 and a smaller iPhone. Perhaps I'm in the minority on both of these, but I think the iPhone SE has sold well. I would sacrifice battery life for a lighter iPad Pro 12.9. I suspect many would not.
