10 and 20 gig Toshiba Drives

I don't think iPod is overpriced.

But I do think it is expensive.

I would love one and would pay for one if I could afford it.

But food and rent come first.

I also won't be a person to buy one when they increase in size or when they get larger caches, etc. I have to save every penny just to be able to buy a new machine every 4-5 years. (I hope my 2 year old G4 400 can hang on 2-3 more years.)
 
New Hardrives..

You'd think if Toshiba is coming out with new HD's of the same size that the 5gb drive would go down in price. I honestly see the new HD's (at least 10gb) getting put into new iPods by the end of this year.
 
Bigger drives in Ipod, for sure.

Thanks to the iPod, Apple is now probably the largest seller of 1.8" drives and Toshiba's largest customer. In this case, Apple can get a very good deal for all the 1.8 drives, which would probably mean in a few months: iPod budget(*) with 5Gb at a lower price, iPod standard with 10Gb at current price, and iPod Special edition with 20 Gb at a
price closer to a corporate jet 🙂.

of Apple and budget in the same sentence 🙂

I doubt apple would ever get into that. Those type of products have very little appeal to the digital lifestyle target audience. besides, why would they support AVI?

I heard that the new drives are 3mm thicker than the 5 gb version. I dont have one yet but i would assume its pretty tight inside and an additional 3mm would mean a thicker case is required....
 
A 20gig iPod is not neccessary, but neither is a 5gig iPod really. (I still want one)
A 20gig iPod would be more useful than a 5gig iPod for other files and thus as the most amazing portable HD ever created. The only people who would buy one if it were upped to 20gig that wouldn't buy the 5gig are either the "I never buy rev A stuff" people or the people who really have a lot of other files to tote around and don't want to just work on a laptop, ie graphics people who sometimes work at home.
iTunes for Wintel? IMHO not a good idea. The whole draw of buying a mac is that it comes with all these great FREE apps that make it so much more useful than a PC can be even if you buy all the available apps. Why buy a mac if you can get itunes, iphoto, idvd, and imovie software on your cheaper PC?
Apple really needs to market the fact that all the stuff BillGates claims you can do on Windows you can actually do right out of the box with a new iMac.

Has anyone noticed that in the full length XP ad there is one guy who tries to fly but can't the first three times they show him?
 
Does anyone know about the pricing of the 10 and 20 gig hard drives? If Apple could in any way (an act of God is a perfectly reasonable way) sell maybe even just the 10 gig for the current $400 price and then offer the 5 gig version for even less, the increase in sales should more than make up for any decrease in profit margin, and then maybe offer the 20 gig for more than $400 🙁 wow, that's a lot of money.

Just my $.02 as my first post here. One of my pc using friends has one and he loves it, I don't have the $$$ to get one yet, and the 30 gig and growing MP3 collection on my HD is making me hesitant to by an MP3 player with only 5 gig of space on it.
 
20 Gig iPod @ MacWorld NYC

I think it's only logical that we will see a 20 gig iPod in July. If Apple intends to support this new porduct, they'll have to hit 20 to compete with the ever-growing storage capabilities of the competition.

...perhaps with Firewire2? - depending on how much USB2 is a factor in 6 months*. If more people adopt USB2, then iPod looses the 'speed-appeal' that it now has over standard USB players.
 
I believe I read somewhere that the 10 & 20 GB drives cost 70,000 and 90,000 Yen a piece. That's about $700 or $900 USD.

That's not cheap.

also since we are talking about possible revisions to the ipod does anyone here remember the rumors about the extra port on the ipod. there was some sort of panel that covered up what looked to be a remote control port. also there was supposed to be an empty slot in the packaging for what people were ***uming was a remote control. any speculations along this line?
 
DigiCam Storage

Hey everyone...

Is it possible to download the contents of a digital camera to an iPod? That would be extraordinarily convenient when out on shoots, and if so would be a deciding factor for making a purchase (to me).

Cannon's new EOS 1D is a pretty amazing pro digital SLR that can shoot 4megapixel sequences at 8fps...that could definitely use a better storage medium than compact flash. How about iPod download after shooting? If there was a way to do that it would be a truly useful application for the iPod.
The only other good/economical alternative would be the new plastic based storage that Intel (I think it's Intel) is developing to replace silicon cards at a tiny fraction of the price.
If it's too hard to engineer a direct camera to iPod connection, then how about a comact flash reader that plugs into the iPod? That seems feasible and much cheaper to produce not to mention much more convenient since it would be way more compatible with a variety of devices.
 
Don't worry about USB 2 on iPod..

USB2 on iPod.. isn't gonna happen any time soon! Two reasons:

1. Apple won't introduce USB 2.0 onto any their desktops or laptops until FireWire 2.0 is introduced (or afterwards even) because they don't want to undercut their FireWire marketing.

2. FireWire is Apple's baby. Read number 1 again.

3. Mac users are the market targetted by Apple for iPod and all iPods have FireWire. Read number 1 again.

4. Apple is trying to enforce hardware standards not embrace hardware diversity. Read number 1 again.. lol

OK, so there were 4 reasons..

i hear you, if there was no such thing as paying for food and rent, i would be a mac-only technician and leave the pc clients to someone else

your 2 year old g4 may start to see signs of age now that there are these dual 1 ghz machines out, but to try and stretch it for two more years, though economical, might bury you in an axiety attack of processor-envy

three years is pushing it in the year of 2002, but four or five years is what people kept their machines for in the 1980s

but the reality of paying bills is more important and since that is a reality, i am still in business

the day people keep their machines for 12 months on average is the day the techies and engineers lose their jobs...only good coders will have steady work and the "AI" people are seeing to it that even programmers will become obsolete

...but don't worry, my friend with his PhD in "AI" says we are at least 200 years away from that and even if he is half right, none of us will be around to see self-coding smart machines
 
3mm difference in drives...

The 5 and 10 gig HD's are the same size. The 20 gig is 3mm larger. No word on whether or not the 20 gig will fit, unmodified, into an ipod case.
 
It probably won't without modifying the iPod. I read about the construction of them...the drives as such aren't actually screwed in, the pressure from the back plate holds them in place. So it's pretty tight in there. Maybe we'll only see a 10 gig. That'd still be great.
