This is most probably overkill and definitely a waste of money but I’d like to buy a 10G adapter. I have 7G ISP speed. I use a Mac mini M1 16GB/2TB. My use case is only Usenet (Eweka & NZBGeek). I reach 110MB/s currently on Wifi.

I found this adapter, would you recommend it?

My mini is not too old / enough to reach max speed?

That is almost like the old dial up connection speeds. Even DSL is from 1- 25 Mbits per second down and 1-5 Mbits per second up on average. At least that is what it use to be here in the US. Most companies don't even offer DSL anymore as they are all getting away from maintaining the copper lines.

Our choices are 5G internet, other forms of wireless internet, satellite, cable, and fiber.

It's interesting to know that Germany wants to shut down the old copper mesh by 2030. Consumes too much energy.

330 Mbits/s is a lot better.

AT&T which provides home phone service in my area has abandoned all of the copper wires that were used for phone and DSL. You have to use Voice Over IP for your home phone and AT&T only offers 5G Internet in my town.

I have Spectrum cel internet and if I wan't to have a home phone, it too would be VOIP and go through my cable modem.

It’s not energy, it’s the value of the copper.
 
I’ve got this in wifi on my iPhone but the Mac mini M1 on wifi is limited at 1 Gbps, is this normal?View attachment 2654089


Different devices have different wifi capabilities. The M1 doesn't support Wifi 6, 6E, or 7, for example. You don't say which wifi you have or which iPhone, but most likely it's just a reduction in capabilities of the older M1 Mini vs your (I assume) newer Wifi and iPhone.

You're right, it is wifi 6, but only 80Mhz channel width it seems. Although I have seen Apple update this on some devices to 160MHz.

This article is not complete but shows that the iPhone 15 supports 6E and even on 6 supports 160Mhz. So potentially has twice the throughput.



If you option click the wifi on each it will show you a screen that will tell you the protocols and configuration.

Where I am now I have Wifi 5 (802.11ac) and 80Mhz. You should check and see what your Mac is seeing.

Channel 36 (5 GHz, unknown MHz)
Tx / Rx Rate: 1729/1921

ok that makes sense. We can't see the MHz on the phone but you can check the channel width on the router to see if it has the 160MHz option active. If it does, the iPhone should be using that, and that could probably explain the difference in speed.

I'm guessing that you're using both devices in the same immediate vicinity as each other too. 😀 But if you're not, distance will be a factor.

And yes. The mini is like 2 meter from the router, so is the phone (triangle).

So the likely answer is that the phone is connecting at 160Mhz channel width and the Mac mini at 80Mhz.

For whatever reason, IIRC, my M4 MacBook Air was limited to 80Mhz when I first got it and then they allowed 160Mhz later through a macOS update. I'm not sure what the rationale there was. Shame they didn't do that with the M1 Mini.
