If Steve Jobs' latest customer email is to believed, it seems Mac users will have to continue to wait for USB 3, According to an email response inquiring about USB3 for Mac, Steve Jobs reportedly wrote:
We don’t see USB 3 taking off at this time. No support from Intel, for example.
USB 3 has been previously rumored to be coming to the Mac Pro and iMac lines, though the latest email casts some doubt on how quickly Apple will adopt the new standard. USB 3 promises higher speeds for external devices.

On the one hand this sounds like the sort of thing a purely reactive company would say, but on the other Apple are probably right that USB 3 would make no difference to 95% of purchasers.

Steve Jobs - visionary

SJ: USB2.0 is better than USB3.0. Enjoy our crippled Macs.

He said the same thing about bluray, mac users wont see it until it becomes an industry standard.

Apple will support it when Intel chipset's support it. That's my guess.

That said, Steve Jobs is a moron. They could be installing USB 3.0 right now with a 3rd party chip. They didn't have a problem with that in the PPC Macs.

Why is this new type of technology not being embraced? It would be fantastic to get the fast data transfer rate that is possible with USB 3.

Same Thing with BluRay

SO, in typical fashion Apple remains behind the curse in certain technologies, but . . . . in typical fashion those that actually need such technology aren't going to wait around for Apple to deliver.

It sucks that the 15" MBP doesn't have Express Card, but the 17" MBP and Mac Pro can get USB 3.0 so some of us don't care that Apple isn't going to adopt it anytime soon.

I feel bad for the rest, but those that need it to make that bacon and eggs money have gotten already, or are going to be getting it soon.

And yes, this is old news, along with the BR issue.

He's talking about the fact that Intel (the one-"L" Intel) still isn't building USB 3.0 support into their chipsets. Try to keep up.

How do you know that this is what he is talking about? Do we really care if USB3.0 controller in our computer was made by Intel or NEC or someone else?

Times are different. It seems they try to play good-boy to all of their component suppliers, especially Intel.

Stupid =/. USB 3.0 is faster and backwards compatible, so I don't know where steves head is :p.. Maybe it has to do with keeping costs down or something?

Steve is being an idiot.

USB 3.0 is simply better and should be implemented purely on that basis. A USB 3.0 port is also backwards compatible, so the whole "will my old stuff work" is irrelevant.

USB 3 not taking off at this time? Well if Steve says so,it must be true. :) I bet he'll see it taking off at the exact moment that new Macs are shipping with it...
