USB3 would take off if Steve would support it.

Have to agree with this, I seem to remember that it was a similar case with usb1 appearing on the original imacs.
I think its a real shame that because Mr Jobs doesn't see it, us Mac user get stuck paying a pretty penny for almost outdated machines.
Lots of other MB makers are including usb3, and also sata6 I might add.

Apple will support it when Intel chipset's support it. That's my guess.

That said, Steve Jobs is a moron. They could be installing USB 3.0 right now with a 3rd party chip. They didn't have a problem with that in the PPC Macs.

You do realize that third party chips aren’t always a good thing right? The first generation third party USB 3.0 host adopters or some may say “hacks" have a lot of issues as expected with the first gen everything: like drivers, speed performance and so on. Many of them aren’t even using the full speed because they can only work in PCIe x1 slot.

USB 3.0 isn’t taking off at the moment, the spec has been around for a year or so but not a lot of USB 3.0 devices on the market. It’s a chicken and egg race. Apple chose not to waste money on something that’ll come by default in Intel’s chipsets by next year.

How do you know that this is what he is talking about? Do we really care if USB3.0 controller in our computer was made by Intel or NEC or someone else?

He just said Intel isn’t supporting it, therefore USB 3.0 isn’t taking off. Believe it or not, Intel has the largest share of the market when it comes to motherboard and PCs.

Yes, we do care. We do not want a crappy controller that barely perform faster than USB 2.0. Stable 2nd gen controller is better to have in a laptop that cost $2K then a first gen controller.

Imagine if Steve had said in 1999 that he doesn't see wireless networking taking off at this time.

Maybe not a fair comparison, but still worth thinking about?!

On the one hand this sounds like the sort of thing a purely reactive company would say, but on the other Apple are probably right that USB 3 would make no difference to 95% of purchasers.

Like Firewire?

Though I'm glad my Mac has Firewire, USB2.0 is too slow for external hard disk.

--

USB 3.0 will take off:
* there's already quite a few hard disk enabled USB3 devices out there.
* USB3.0 will take off for (windows ) PC because there's nothing else faster that is mainstream than USB 2.0

Shame Apple aren't being proactive, but its not in their interest to support USB3...

So, no USB 3.0 until 2012 (Intel will, hopefully, adopt them then).

But, my guess it that Apple will shove a couple of lightpeak ports in the next gen iMac and Mac Pro's, so that, in theory, mac users will be more "accustomed" to the lightpeak ports which have with faster speeds and if lightpeak hard drive's (ssd's) start going on sale in spring 2011, then some mac users may purchase lightpeak external hard drives and when USB 3.0 is finally adopted then everyone will have lightpeak devices which will make USB 3.0 DOA.

And, imagine how fast a sync will be through lightpeak (theoretically 2x faster than a sync through USB 3.0)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

I wonder if he's banking on a bigger leap forward with 1 optical connection for everything. Skip USB 3. The future is all about minimalism, not options.

Just a wild guess : Apple is not investing into technology that doesn't benefit the iGadgets first and foremost .

FW 800 is how old ?

If you are a Mac user, you'll just have to wait till something trickles down from the iPad .

Doesn't make sense for computer users, but there you go ...

I've said this time and again.

When Intel make a chipset with USB 3 macs will get USB 3.

Simple as that.

So much fuss over nothing

I have too many ports already!

If I need another different cable port I am fine with waiting 20 more years because is a pain in the a** every time I have to connect equipment and hunting for the right cable for teh computer I am using.

I am into multimedia stuff and not having Mac Pros with Firewire 400 is a pain, now they want to change the USB por again.

Use your brain and make it fit into the same old USB port!!!!

The standard plug looks pretty much identical to the current one. Both plugs pictured are USB 3.

The other plug that doesn't look like the current is so ugly. That couldn't even fit in a MacBook. At least the older flat and skinny is USB 3 as well.

That would be the device end. You're going to find the normal, smaller rectangular version on the back or side of your computer.

TERRIBLE. That's the *only* thing I was waiting for, to get an iMac. I guess I'll keep on using my PC with USB3. Can't go back to USB2.... NO WAY.

USB 3 is not taking off? I have been shopping for an external hard drive and there are only a few Firewire models on the market (that I have seen), the rest are either USB 2.0 or USB 3.

Too different.

I think Steve Jobs tries a little too hard to be different from the competitors.

No Flash player, Bluray, USB 3, SATA 3??? These technologies will continue to be important whether Apple likes it or not.

USB 3 and SATA 3 in my i7 hackintosh, but Apple doesn't support them. No drivers. Hopefully someone will make a kext.

The lack of this tech in the Mac Pro proves how overpriced it is.

I spent a $1000 on parts for a now working hackintosh that would've cost me $3500 from Apple.

Maybe it's because Intel is working on Lightpeak with Apple?

That's a mis-perception. Intel is working on Lightpeak on its own. It's Intel's own design. Apple might be providing some input just like all other computer manufacturers.

from Engadget

"Remember how Intel showed off its new, advanced optical standard -- Light Peak -- this past week on a Hackintosh? Well it turns out there's more to that story than you probably know, and it all leads back to some revealing facts about the connection... literally and figuratively. Engadget has learned -- thanks to an extremely reliable source -- that not only is Apple complicit in the development of Light Peak, but the company actually brought the concept to Intel and asked them to create it. More to the point, the new standard will play a hugely important role in upcoming products from Cupertino.
According to documents we've seen and conversations we've had, Apple had reached out to Intel as early as 2007 with plans for an interoperable standard which could handle massive amounts of data and "replace the multitudinous connector types with a single connector (FireWire, USB, Display interface)." From what we've learned, the initial conversations (and apparent disagreements) were had directly between Steve Jobs and Paul Otellini. "

I think he reaction will be exactly the same when that comes out, at least usb3 is backwards compatible, ( and available now) light peak will be a complete change for everyone, forget about all you current peripherals.

And it would be a change well worth it!
One port for EVERYTHING and speed beyond anything!
