Threw my iPhone 4 on my bed and it bounced up at my 11.6" MBA's screen and left a nice little crack. How much is this very stupid mistake going to cost me?

Probably around $200-$400 for a new screen (total guess based off older replacements I've had to do on older apple stuff).

Take it in, tell them your a freaking IDIOT, and bed for forgiveness... not their place to fix it, but they might show kindness in this case.

Silly question, but as long as you have an AMEX is the purchase protection included? I have an AMEX card but I'm unfamiliar with the process...

I use Amex for all gadget purchases just for this feature. (never done the claiming process though)

You'll get 90 days of protection against accidental damage and theft. Regular manufacture warranty will be extended by one year. When 90 day protection runs out, I usually consider buying insurance plan with SafeWare or Worth Ave Group to cover theft/damage depending on the item/usage.

Not sure if the condition is different if you have super-duper AMEX cards, but the features I mentioned above are included in any Amex cards, and you don't have to do anything to enroll or add at the time of gadget purchase. Just buy with the card, and the protection is fully automatic.

I'd really like to hear form someone who used AmEx's claim process for replacing expensive electronics like a laptop. How difficult is it to do? Will they make you repair it or can you just replace it with a new one? How many hoops do you have to jump through? Thanks in advance.

Going through the process right now. I have to send them a signed claim submission form, a copy of the receipt for my MacBook Air, the American Express monthly statement on which it was charged, and a picture of the damage. It takes them up to 30 days to review the claim but they said they may or may not ask for a repair estimate once they receive the claim. If they deem it to be a valid claim, they will tell me to go ahead and fix the damages and they will reimburse the cost. If they deem it to be too costly, they will reimburse the whole cost of the laptop. I will let everyone know what happens.

Thank you for the details. Good luck.

Ahh, so sad. If it was my MBA I'd really prefer a replacement of course, but that looks repairable. I assume Apple would need to replace the entire lid unit. Hope it works out quickly.

Sorry again about your trouble, but please keep us posted how the Amex claim goes. I've heard they won't give much of hustle, but we all know how all insurance programs are. I hope you'll get it fixed in no time.

OUCH. That makes me cringe because I've nearly done the same thing before. Sorry. Hope it all works out with Amex.

Went to the Apple Store today to get an estimate on how much it would cost to repair. AMEX hasn't asked for a this yet and even said they may or may not need it all but I did it anyways. The cost broke down as follows:

Display Module $521.59
HARDWARE REPAIR-LEVEL 1 $39.00
Total: $560.59

Just in case anyone wanted to know how much it would cost to fix a cracked screen. I'm guessing if I had a base model, AMEX would just refund me the cost of the laptop since repairing it would cost more than 50% of a new one but I have an "ultimate" so I think they will pay for the repair instead.

560.59? Are they on crack....

Ur screen is cracked, but I don't see how display can cost 500 dollars. Obviously, stupid move by apple.

I thought it would cost that much....mainly bec. this is Apple doing the repair.:apple:

Could have been worse, the back and front of the iPhone 4 could have cracked as well.

Try taking your MBA somewhere else for repair. Oh, that's right, no one else supplies the parts for them.

As long as Amex covering the repair bill, I'd stick with Apple repair. I mean, why not? Of course it's a different story if you can wait till Amex reimburse or even approve the claim though. I wonder how long it will actually take for amex to give a go for the repair work.

Ouch bro.
Thats probably going to cost you a bit. I think Apple quoted me $400 for my Macbook Pro screen?
Whops just saw the post about you going to the APple Store.

So what are you going to do?

On the older machines it was possible to swap the screen for about $250-300 all by yourself by purchasing the upper part on eBay. Sadly since this has only been out for less than 2 months it's very unlikely there will be any on eBay. That implies that most likely parts will have to be bought from Apple directly which means major $$$ even if you were able to swap it yourself.

Go in on Christmas day and maybe they'll be more generous ;)

LOL, yeah, excellent idea, go the Apple store on Christmas day. I'm sure they'll be waiting at the front door. Or maybe they'll be at home opening up xmas gifts like most other retailer's employees are doing. :p

Apple charging what they do for a replacement screen is not an indication they are on crack or stupid. However, others who think they are, are incorrect.
