I'm praying this is already a new MacBook (not Air). I know it's unlikely, but it'd be awesome if it were true. My ex just bought a MB and I would love for it to be "old technology" already :D

i would consider getting one of these if:
1. 10+ battery
2. decent CPU (NO ARM PLEASE - i dont want iOS)
3. +4GB RAM supported.
4. <$1500 price tag.

i think thats reasonable to ask.

If it had a good balance between price and spec, I'd consider it. My sister and a friend both have an old 12" Mac that they still use from time to time. Fills a gap for sure.

Just as long as it doesn't run on an A4 my interest is peaked.

Just a side note - they could run into a touch price point situation here. $1000 for the 13", and $800 odd for the higher spec'd iPad.

Wonder what they will sell it for? Unless they kill the 13" MacBook so that the 13" MBP is a 'Pro' model now.

Good little whack of rumors out today.

Ok, Now I Understand

A few years ago Steve and Jonny went on a trip to Africa. They encountered a witch doctor and asked her "for a little head". Both of them walked out with slightly shrunken heads. Look carefully the next time you see them and look at the head to body ratio....

This explains their never-ending quest to make everything else around them "shrunken"....;)

I have to wonder if this will be the first iOS notebook -- kind of an iPad with a keyboard and slightly larger screen. The App Store model is working very well for many users who prefer to have a single location to go to find pre-screened, "safe," stable, usable apps. Far too many notebook users simply never install anything that doesn't come in shrink-wrap from a store shelf, believing that installing apps that they download is the computing analog to having unprotected sex with a south African prostitute.

Before we get too excited - digitimes has a variable track record with rumours.

Besides Steve Jobs has been quite down on netbook sized computers in the past - this would fall into that category.

I would find this product extremely interesting if it ran an A4 and had a keyboard. But I mean if they are calling it a Macbook, it is unlikely to be an A4 or any ARM processor.

Please oh please

The iPad took a nice chunk out of the netbook market, and Id love to see Apple do so even further with an 11 inch MBA. I coudnt see it getting any "thinner", while holding a much needed spec bump. For heavens sake, give it a 720p screen (great PPI at that size), ULV i3 varient (most likely C2D though), 2 USB ports (this time), nVidia graphics of base MBP, and a standard SSD (128 GB)...drum role please: all starting at 899.99.

Sorry folks, I should learn to not do acid and write comments at the same time...of course its gonna cost an arm and a leg.

Powerbook

I still have a 12" Powerbook in excellent condition. Just pulled it out and played with it this past weekend. Still an amazing little computer. However, I still like my 15" MBP better and if I really wanted something small I would get an iPad.

If they can give me an 11.6" laptop that has the same (or better) resolution than the current 13" I'd consider getting one

how much is this going to cost compared to a similar spec'd netbook?

Ok, similarly spec'd netbook: MacOS X alone costs about $2,500 for DMCA infringement if you get caught. MacBook is a lot, lot cheaper.

You should realise that ARM doesn't mean iOS. Apple would have no problem at all to recompile MacOS X for ARM and ship an ARM based MacOS X with full MacOS X on it. The apps that I create run on PowerPC, Intel x86 and Intel x86-64; adding ARM to it would be no problem at all (and ARM is more compatible with Intel than with PowerPC anyway). And with ARM the ten hours with a small (light weight) battery wouldn't be a problem either. ARM would also help Apple keep the price down and stop it from cannibalising Intel MacBook sales.

If the price and specs were just right, I'd definitly get one! I've been in the market for a light weight ultra portable laptop for a while. I've already got an i7 iMac at home, so I dont need a powerful laptop. I just need something small and light for travel and school. I take online classes and something like this would be ideal. I would have already got a new laptop, but I cant justify spending $1200-$1500 on the current 13" MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. I refuse to pay that much for aging Core 2 Duo technology. I would simply get a cheaper windows laptop, but I really enjoy using OSX, the build quality, and battery life. I'll definitly buy this new smaller laptop as long as it runs OSX, has great battery life, at least an i3 processor, ability to support 4GB of RAM, and under $1200. Maybe that's too much to ask for... at least from Apple. :D

I hope resolution is at a minimum of 1280 by 800 native. 1152 by 720 is just getting to small for a 11-12".

I would say prices will start at $799

I am specifically looking for the follow-up to my current used-daily iBook, however none of their current offerings really spur me to say "Hey, that's perfect!" I'm confident that a sub 12" notebook would be just the perfect little compact size I'd like.

I just wish the Air had an ethernet port for the times I'm out of Wifi, other than that, I don't use any other feature that the Air leaves out. It's like Apple is tempting me. Personally.

Unless this has a full keyboard, intel processors, multitouch glass trackpad, and costs less than $1000, it will fail just as much as the current MBA. Good luck getting all that done at 11.6". There was nothing wrong with 13.3".

The current MBA is a nice machine, but the price is all wrong. By pricing it above both 13" MB and MBP, Apple gives very little reason to pay for the MBA. Yes, it is lighter, but a lot of things had to be sacrificed to achieve that form factor. And that is simply not reflected in the price. I shouldn't have to pay more for fewer ports, cheaper processors, less RAM, slower hard drives, limited upgradeability, and no DVD drive.
