I also heard that Apple is making an 8" MBP. This would clip onto a backpack or fannypack with a lanyard for easy access and portability. Similar to the iPad but for professional use. Also from a very reputable source.

I have heard nothing of an 8" MacBook Pro. It's nonsense until I can dig up at least something more on it. As far as I know the only sizes floating around besides the 11" are the 9", the 7", and the 5" MacBook Pro.

I never claimed that I had a source on the 11", but only that they are out there. I was referring to the digitimes story the mentioned a new iMac screensize, and some followup articles claiming that there was soon to be a fourth MacBook Pro size.. They were speculating 11.6" because of the new Air, and people still missing the 12" Powerbook. I mentioned that there are always prototypes floating around the Apple campus. I did not mean an 11" Pro prototype had been spotted, but only prototypes in general.

Why would you want a 11" MBP.

It defeats the purpose no? I mean a MBP is a "pro" because you "NEED" the little bit extra. Most of the time it's for video editing, music compilation, gaming, or something of that nature. Why in the world would you "need" that little bit extra with only an 11" screen? The 13" MBP is pushing it's limits already.

The MBA's are airs for a reason, they are small, portable. They do their job perfectly well. I feel folks are getting the idea of the two machines to mixed up. It seems people want the portability of the air with the power of the pro... it doesn't exist quite yet... it's coming though.
What about the alienware m11x? it's a machine made for heavy gaming (which means it can be used for professional usage like video editing etc), and it's only 11 inches.
If they make a MBP (or a white macbook) at 11 inches, it can have the same specs as the 13 but without optical drive. doesn't sound bad at all, exept if you don't like that small of a screen, which really is a matter of preference.
People say 13 is too small, but in the other hand it's apple best-selling product, which means people like it. What if people like the 11 inch too? Maybe with a high resolution display it can get really good.

An 11" computer is by any definition an ultraportable. Apple has an excellent one already in MBA. I (very) strongly doubt that we would see an 11" MBP.

This.
An 11" MBP would mainly be competing with the 11" Air.
Any machine lacking Ethernet/Firewire and which relies on on-board graphics can hardly be called "Pro".
The 13" Pro barely deserves the title as it is, being essentially a "posh" Macbook.

I`ll now await the 13" owners flaming me to death but I stand by my point, the 13" is Pro in name only so an 11" version with even less power/connectivity would be a joke to me.
What next, iPad Pro?

No No, its definitely the above mentioned 8" MBP, with a massive 800*600 screen you 2 can go back to the ages of not having a Dock fit on correctly. With a keyboard thats 35% of the size, you too can enjoy attempting to push the 'e' key and typing "qwqweqq". I also heard its going to have 1 USB port, 1 FW800 port so its a Pro, up to a 1Ghz Core Duo, 2GB RAM and a 32GB SSD - should be enough for anything anyone wants to do ever) ;)

I agree with the poster above you (orfeas0). If they pulled the optical drive from the 13" MacBook Pro then it could become a lot more "Pro." The same innards could make it down to an 11" machine.

The 13" and 11" MacBook Pro sans optical drive would have discrete graphics and longer battery life than the 13" and 11" MacBook Air.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

If it comforts you, there's already one out - the 11" MBA!

Without an optical drive, it cannot be called a MacBook Pro, Im sorry, but some of us need the optical drive, and carrying an external one around - no thankyou. They managed to get a full-featured (Including the drive) down to 12". The 13" would be a lot more Pro if Intel werent so far up their own ass about how fantastic their dreadful integrated graphics are. If Apple has any sense, theyll leave the optical drive in, its a feature enough people still use. (If they remove it, I shall just plough on regardless with my 13" MacBook from 2008 instead of replacing it)

So, you are basically saying pull the optical drive out of the 13" MBP, take it down to 11" and give it discrete graphics and lo and behold you have an 11" MBP.

Wait, What... NO.

I say again, No Ethernet, No Firewire, No Optical drive Not a Pro. Not even slightly.
My 15" i5 MBP barely deserves the Pro title but this?

Anyhow, the chances of Apple actually doing this are slim to nonexistant.
I can`t see them dropping the 13" MBP anytime soon either, it`s not what I want but it`s their best selling model so I suspect they will wait to see if the Air takes sales off it first before dropping their smallest Macbook Pro.

They really need to keep the next MacBook Pro under 4.5" if it is going to be portable enough for me to put in my pocket.

yea, but think of this:
The macbook pro needs the optical drive because it's "pro".
The white one doesn't, so they dump the optical drive from it and bump up its battery life, maybe put an ssd or discrete graphics or both.
Which one will be the pro then? The white or the mbp? ;)

Srly people.. wake up, all you want for the MBP 2011 is to be the air.. (thinner, no optical drive, flash storage, 11"?)

-Thinner?.. we need power, if you want thinner, get the air.
-No optical drive?.. Even tho most people doesn't use it but we're not ready to get rid of the optical drive yet, wait till 2012
-Flash storage? the thing is the flast storage isn't big enough, 64gb? that's not enough, the good size of it costs loads of money.
-11"? CMON PEOPLE, this is called pro not ultraportable netbook..

So my point is.. If you want that THEN GO BUY THE MACBOOK AIR..

All of you guys saying that a MacBook Pro without an optical drive would not be a "pro" machine are in for a rude awakening. The optical drive is on it's way out. This year? Next year? The year after? That I don't claim to know, but it will happen within the decade. I would not be surprised if it happened within the year on the 13" Pro.

What a genius response.

Let's see an Air with Sandy Bridge + discrete graphics and a battery big enough to power it. Hopefully by the time Haswell arrives in a couple years the IGP will be powerful enough to eliminate the need for discrete graphics, but until then?

Unfortunately, the odds are we will not get a 13" MacBook Pro sans optical drive, but we won't know until new machines are announced.
