So I’ve had the phone since Friday, and I noticed yesterday in certain lighting that there are water stains all over the screen... almost like the dried water spots you would see on a glass shower door. I tried wiping them off but they’re not coming out. I’ve never noticed this on any iPhone I’ve had, and I’ve had every model since 2011.

Does anyone what I could use to get rid of these, or is this some kind of defect?

Not easy to see in the pic, but you can especially see the spots at the top of the phone. I was also thinking it could be faulty oleophobic coating.

Indeed looks like some of the oleophobic coating's parts have been worn off. I think the warranty should cover a replacement.

Yeeeesh. Return it and buy a new one and don't utilize warranty / exchange / genius bar within 14 days of purchase if at all possible.

Looks so bad, almost as if the protective film had not been removed yet.

That would drive me insane. Like everyone else has said, I would go into a store and request a warranty replacement. That looks trashy.

I do not have a screen protector installed. how should I handle this? Still haven’t transferred my AC+ from my previous phone.

This is an out of the box issue, so it would be covered by warranty protection and would not need Apple Care AFAIK. You're also within the return period.

I did not clean the phone with any liquids. I’ve only wiped it with a dry cloth. The only thing I could think of that would cause this coating to come off would be using the phone after having liquor spilled on my hands, but is that really something that should cause this?

DONT ask for warranty replacement. Just return the thing and wait for another one. If you plan to sell in a year or 2, it makes a difference. But then again, it may be too soon for apple to even have warranty replacements with the different serial identifiers and that come in the small blank white box atm. If they bring you out a brand new box like when you purchased, take it and run. If not, return it.

Yep, OP read this before you go. This is great advice.

Idk what to do cause I already sent back my XS Max that I traded this in for, so I’ll be phone less if I return it. I’m hoping they can just reserve a replacement for me once they are available, but I’m not sure if that’ll be an option. Worst case scenario I’ll have to use my Apple Care + to replace the screen for $29 in the near future.

you won’t have to use apple care + for a screen replacement under warranty unless it was damage you caused. So you’re good. Either way, don’t take the warranty replacement. Go buy a $10 burner and keep an eye on istocknow for ur new one

Other option is buy the cheapest one available, return your pro max. Once the store receives stock, return the cheap on you purchased and buy the pro max. Now this might sound crazy but even at Apple Store near me, for those who are getting their phone sent for repair and don't have a phone (they no longer do a loaner phone), they suggest buy a new phone, while their other one is being sent for repair and once they receive it, then they return it. This is coming from the Apple Store manager themselves. Whether this is right thing to do or not us up to the individual.

Alcohol pretty much destroys the oleophobic coating.

Update - was in the Apple store for 3 hours yesterday and they basically told me I was **** out of luck unless I just returned the phone. They couldn’t give me a replacement any time soon, even though they agreed it looked to be a manufacturer defect.

This morning I called Verizon and told them my situation. They’re sending me a brand new phone in a few weeks and they’ll send me a return kit so I can send this one back when I receive the new one.

I had the exact same thing on a replacement 8+. I took it back and they exchanged it, no problem.
