First time MAC user...Urgent help required!!!PLZ

hi guys,
I just bought a 13" mbp base model...
I m a frst time mac user and m facing quite a lot of issues...

1.how do u CUT files in mac?Does mac support only copy paste?
2.How do u install applications.I downloaded vlc and mozilla and for both of them there was a disk created on desktop..Whats that for?
3.I have a collection of over 100 movies.I want all of them to be played by default using VLC.But I realized I have to do it one by one for each and every movie..How to select VLC as a default player for EVERY media file?
4.I had some files in my external disk (media files) but they r not showing up on MAC.its really pissing me off.I tried changing the location of the folder on pc,also dragging all files in root out of any folder but mac is not reading them although it shows memory utilized but just ignore thoz files...
5.For some of my installed application the icon doesnt appear on the dock folder for application but it appears when I open the same applications folder in finder..

I would keep posting more issues as and when I guess...It should take me hardly 3-4 days to get used to it.Plz keep replying for that much time..

Welcome and congratulations on your purchase.

1. How to cut/paste files & folders in OS X via MRoogle and "cut paste". It will be there in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, which will be released in Summer 2011.

5. How did you install those applications, as you asked how to do it in your second question?

There is no cut in finder

Open the disk and run the installer application inside these - if they have now gone, the disk image (.dmg) will be in the downloads folder probably

Select 1 movie and then with a right click select get info from the drop down menu and then set open with to the correct application, and then select the change all button

If you want cut and paste, I recommend using path finder I use that and it provides a file explorer closer to windows making it more useful in my opinion.

As for bypassing the trash, no everything goes there first and then you empty.

Wow.

What is the format of the external HDD? Check via Finder: right click on the HDD icon (Desktop or Sidebar), select GET INFO and look what it says behind "Format":

And take a look at the guide on how to install applications, it should be very easy to understand.

And there is no "shift+delete" in Mac OS X, unless you use Terminal.

Not without third party software in Snow Leopard.

You might just want to consider a Finder replacement like Path Finder. http://www.cocoatech.com/ that adds some of the features you expect from Explorer. (EDIT: maflynn beat me to it).

BTW It's a Mac or Macintosh, a MAC is something other than a computer made by Apple Inc. Otherwise we'll have to figure out what is wrong with your network card or ATM terminal or cosmetics... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac

A couple of more queries:

1.Whats the difference between hiding/minimizing an application from dock or clicking the red cross/closing the app?lets say I open mail app,what difference does it make if I click the red cross or minimize the app?
 
It may sound odd but I would just like to ask you guys how sturdy is this laptop.I plan to use this laptop for next 4-5 years and i m really scared that it might get a dent or something.I m using a backpack and I even while slipping it in the backpack I make sure I dont hold it too hard.
This model has been around for past 3 years so I would just like to enquire how had been the experience of you guys using this model for past 2-3 years.
Can I just forget to keep that extra care and start using it normally...

X closes the window, minimise sends the window to the dock.

X behaves just like windows, for apps that go to the system tray (next to the clock in bottom left), but instead of clicking the item in the system tray to open a window in that application, you click the dock icon.
 
Also let me know if there a better option available for "preview" app.My purpose it just to view pics,no editting.Three finger swipe doesnt seem to be working with preview and neither pinch to zoom.dunno why?plz suggest

So practically whats the difference?
I gave reference to mail app.In both the cases mail app would be in dock,running and fetching mails at predefined intervals.Then whats the diff.?

The window is no longer loaded into memory if you close it. But it is if you hide it.
 
As far as the sturdiness of the computer goes, I find my unibody to be pretty sturdy. I mean, I haven't dropped it or thrown it off a cliff, but I haven't had any problems or issues yet.

You mentioned that the three finger swipe in preview isn't working for you. Make sure that under system preferences ->trackpad -> that 3 finger swipe is checked and set to "swipe to navigate". Also, I am a fan of using the space bar to preview pictures. if you click once on a photo or a document and then press the space bar, then it will show you a preview of the item. You can use the arrow keys to navigate from picture to picture.

As far as the trash goes, there isn't a way (that I know of ) to bypass the trash but you can secure empty the trash by clicking the trash can, going to finder on the top of your menu and selecting secure empty trash. This permanently deletes the file from your drive.

Bonus Round: I find it useful, when wanting to throw something away, to use the keyboard shortcut command+delete. This way you aren't dragging down to the trash all the time. Also command +shift+delete empties the trash for you.

But in both the cases I can see that silver dot at the bottom of icon on dock.And will it check for mails at specified times in Both the cases?
That means,either an app is totally closed,or it is minimized where it is consuming the memory(like windows minimize)or is closed where its not consuming memory but running...
I cant figure out functional change between the last 2
 
If an application is running (indicated by the dot in the Dock) and has a window open and visible, it consumes memory.
If an application is running and has a window hidden, it consumes memory.
If an application is running and has a window minimised, it consumes memory.
If an application is running and has no window open or visible or minimised or hidden, it consumes memory.
If another application needs the memory of an inactive or even active application, the data storing the information about that application will be copied from the RAM to the HDD (Page Outs, swapping) and will be deleted from the RAM, thus the memory hungry application can consume more memory.

Take a look at Activity Monitor and select ALL PROCESSES in the toolbar and then sort by "Real Memory" to see the actual consumption of RAM.
 
A lot of the questions you are asking are every day use questions, my advise is to either book into your local apple store and get them to run through everything in person or jump on the apple site and there is HEAPS of tutorials on there for you to do. It is how i learnt.

What is normal usage? It's not going to get magically dented or marked just from sitting on a desk. But yes, if you drop something on the case, it's probably going to dent it. If you are going to be transporting it frequently I would recommend a decent padded bag/case at least.

They can take quite a beating but a dropped computer is a dropped computer (read largely ****ed, especially with a HDD).
