I am an ex windows fanboy, and word has spread around my work and friends that I'm switching to a Mac. Long story short im getting a lot of hate for doing so and my friends keep pounding me with jokes and fact on windows and tryingnto get me to not buy a Mac. Any arguments you can give me to counter their shenanigans? I need some stuff to back me up because I'm definitely not going back to a windows only computer. (bootcamp doesn't count)

Just buy it. There's nothing they can do about that. Trying to fight it will just make it worse.
x2. Nothing you say is really going to change their opinion, so I wouldn't even entertain them trying to play their game...

If you feel the need to watercool your modded box to get a couple more FPS then OSX isn't for you

People who hate on Macs are usually A) people who cant afford them or B) are jealous that you have one. Just my experience with that battle.

The answer that you can give them is that they hold resale value about 1000 times better then any freaking PC.

I like Macs because of the aesthetics of their products and the OS is much nicer. A nice equipped PC is nothing bad, just not my taste.

I absolutely hate this argument. Sure a $2000 mac will still be worth $1200 in a year or two, but a comparable PC will cost $1000, and if it's worth $300 in a year or two, you've still managed to come out ahead with the PC (lost $800 on the mac vs $700 with the PC)

/End rant

I'm going to be the 3rd choice, option c. I happen to like macs, but Windows 7 is truly "good enough" that I can't imagine spending 2x as much for a mac.

Of course I'm that guy who would buy a ford over a BMW since they both get me from point A to point B just as well, I guess my lifestyle choices extend to my computer purchases as well ;)

OP: Hater's gonna hate. There's no much you can do about it. Generally the arguments are valid, too. You just need to decide if the arguments against buying a mac outweigh the benifits of a mac. For some people, they don't, for others, they do.

Howerver, it sounds like you want one. Go buy it, and if you really hate it, return it. I believe best buy doesn't have restocking fees for laptops anymore, and I'm sure the Apple Store is the same if you ask nicely.

I'm talking long haul man, not 2 years. I recently sold my 7 year old Macbook for 400 bucks, lost about 1200 but still... you wont get nothing for a 7 year old pc (if its still running) no matter top end or not. Yeah, you might balance out the overall savings, but its nice to know you can still get some cash for a Mac many years later and they tend to run smoothly all through out unlike many PC's.

I'm not hating on PC's either, I run windows 7 with parallels and find nothing wrong with it. To each his own when it comes to this.

I completely agree - people say this all the time, citing the sale price x numbers of years in while forgetting that it cost twice the price to start with. They also over-exaggerate the PC's value. I've sold plenty of used Windows laptops for very good prices.

OP - if you want a Mac, the best reasons are the ones you truly have. If you need others to come up with reasons that justify your purchase, then you shouldn't buy it. A Mac isn't simply better than a Windows machine - there are pros and cons to each that you have to weigh.

I recently sold a 7 year old Dell Inspiron 6000 for $350. It's a mistake to think that a well working laptop "won't get nothing".

I'm not surprised you got $400 for a 7 year old MacBook. They were only released in 2006 so yours must have been extremely rare. ;)

What what what? Win7 is still miles away of being par with mac os. Just yesterday I thought I install win7 again on my bootvamp partition and I can't believe people still use this rubbish OS. It took me more than 2h30 to install with all updates. While doing so I had to restart perhaps 5-6 times? I had to download over 80 updates. Insane! I haven't worked with windows for a while and just realised how MS doesn't understand what 'user friendly' means. To be clear here, I've been using windows since 3.11. I just switched to mac a year ago. The thing that you can simply drag your apps to the application folder without going through a terribly long installation procedure followed by a restart alone makes mac os for me a no brainer. expose + trackpad is a thing I can't live without. time machine is a great feature as well. I hated to backup my files under windows. I basically just dragged all my files to an external drive to backup. Took ages to finish and I would only do it every couple of weeks. Of course you could sit down hours with your win7 and download all software you need but that's a) quite expensive b) extremely tine consuming. I don't want to spent more time with my cOmputer than necessary. I could give 100 more reasons but typing this on an iPhone isn't really fun :)

You are correct, felt like its been longer and had 7 in my head for some reason.

To dude who sold the Dell for $350, I need to learn your sales tactics cause someone was really ripped off.

Just buy one and compare your macbook VS their windows (laptop or desktop) in these aspects:
Boot speed
trackpad! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
programms running in the background taking all the ram (antivirus, antispyware, [insert_manufacturer's_name] 10 preinstalled programs).
photo booth
spotlight (search option)
DESIGN, weight.
material (if you get one of the aluminum models - pro/air).

They will all buy a mac sooner or later if you show them all those :)

don't worry about them, they can't afford it or are too scared to try it out. When they come to you because they got a virus or something doesn't work, you'll have your opportunity to get back at them

Just get one. Stroll into work, sit at you desk, get out your new MacBook Pro and fire it up whilst lighting a cigar and putting your feet up on the desk.

You just entered another level of coolness.

You're not going to convince anyone that OSX/Macs are better. They have their mind made up and no amount of arguing will change that fact.

The machine that best fits your needs and be happy and contend. Don't mind what others say.

People gave me crap when I switched and it didn't matter to me... I just ignored them.

Then I laughed when we went to play SC2 and my computer loaded everything more than twice as fast as everyone else.

Allow me to quote myself:

Need OS X? Buy a Mac.
Need the trackpad *regulary* (instead of a mouse)? Buy a Mac.
Need keyboard backlight? Buy a computer with keyboard backlight.
Need Windows in combination with the above? Buy a Mac.
Need Windows without the above? Buy a PC and get your lady something nice for the money saved.

do they sound like this:

"lmao you overpaid for same hardware i could get for $500"
"lmao hipster"
"lmao a mac pro is $7000 compared to my $1500 gaming rig"
"lmao mac doesn't even have more than 10% of the market share"
"lmao you bought into steve jobs' bs"
"lmao you've paid extra $500 for a picture of an apple"
"lmao you can't even play any games on it"

Just smile and nod.....when they see its not bothering you they will stop. Psycology 101

The same class hardware with similar specs from Windows PC manufacturers costs roughly equivalent to Macs.

HP EliteBook (not Sandy Bridge) = $1200 (originally $1950)

Operating system: Genuine Windows® 7 Professional 64
Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-560M Processor (2.66 GHz, 3 MB L3 cache)
Memory: 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 SDRAM
Memory slots: 2 SODIMM
Internal drive: 320 GB 5400 rpm 2.5-inch SATA II
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics

This has comparable spec and pricing (albeit the price of the HP has been reduced to match) as the least expensive 13" MacBook Pro.

Here are some reasons to get a Mac. https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/12830926/

Also, another reason to get a Mac. http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-20075725-17/tdl-4-the-indestructible-botnet/

When I was younger I cared about this sort of thing. Now, not so much....
I had a Mac Classic from 1991, maybe 1990, and I thought that everyone should use a Mac. Then I got a PC in 1995 and thought the PC was the best thing since sliced bread and that all my Mac friends should switch with me. I've been a PC user since then mostly because I couldn't afford a Mac. I still really can't afford one but I'm buying it anyway because, well, I need a new laptop and I WANT a Mac! My PC friends will rag on me for buying a Mac but such is life. I won't let it bother me, but I will also never again be one of those people. Buy what you want, what you need, and what you can afford. Those other people can just get over themselves! :apple:
