12.9-Inch 'iPad Pro' Again Rumored to Have Oxide LCD Display

Can someone clarify if Sharp's IGZO has actually ever been used in any of the previous iPads? As far as I know, it has been shown that the iPad Air and Air 2 use LG and Samsung panels, none of which are IGZO.

My theory is the iPad Pro and 12" MacBook Air are not two different products, but are in fact one Surface Pro 3 style product.

Can we get some real Surface Pro 3 competition from Apple? Not that I don't love the iPad, I just find that MS hit be nail on the head with the SP3 and giving users the best (and some times worst) of both worlds.

Not saying we need tablet optimized OSX or desktop optimized iOS, just a tablet that can really, REALLY replace my MBP.

Oxide LCD display while other tablets are getting more efficient and better quality OLED displays? Seriously?

I'm more interested in the resolution, 12.9" would surely best be widescreen preferably 16:9 so would be bigger and wider than current 2048 x 1536 res. I believe what Kuo is saying, so we will have bigger ipad and hopefully software than can take full advantage of that bigger display *hint2* split screen multitasking...

Yuck!
No. Never. Never, ever.
Please.... Apple, keep giving us 4:3 tablets.
I am ridiculously excited for an iPad Pro.
The only thing that could dissuade me would be 16:9.

A more energy efficient screen seems a given if they are going with a ultra-high resolution display. What I'm more interested in is the possibility of USB type-C ports.

  • A stylus.
  • An Apple designed physical keyboard.
  • USB ports for more than charging.
Three things that when put together could truly change the way the consumer sees the iPad, and the way they use the iPad.

All I'm looking for is a precise Wacom-style stylus (not one of those stubby capacitive pens). I want to replace an engineering notepad and pen so I can draw technical diagrams and write formulas on the fly. You just can't do that right any other way. Hopefully Tim Cook is reading the Mac Rumors forums right now and I've suitably inspired him :-/...

One of my hobbies is artwork for some other forums that I use. I've often thought the iPad could be the ideal device given a precise stylus. If it wasn't for the iPad Pro rumors I would have already brought myself an Air 2 and a Wacom Intuos Creative Stylus 2.

I don't get 13" iPad unless it capable of doing both IOS and OS X.

I won't buy another iPad just because it's 13" with the same apps.

I must be missing something.

It doesn't make much sense unless the "12.9" iPad Pro" is the display portion of the 12" MacBook Air in Apple's interpretation of a Yoga / Transformer style device.

I was longing for a 7" tablet not long after I bought my regular sized iPad and have very little use or interest in anything bigger now short of my MBA. A "bigger" iPad is the last thing I need (or want), but that seems to be Apple's MO nowadays in their quest to relive the good ol' days and prove that they inherited the SJ Magic.

We get you. MS paid you to keep plugging their stuff. Go away troll.

Actually they have a point. Look at the post I quoted below. All the rumours we've seen for both the 12" MBA and iPad Pro seem like they're hitting at very similar points. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it turned out they were one product and everyone was assuming it would be two different ones.

So let me get all these rumors straight. I've been saying for the past year that the iPad Pro and MacBook Air Retina are likely the same device. Or at least they will merge at some point in the next few years. So again, let me get this straight…

Redesigned MacBook
12" retina display
Very energy efficient fanless design
Reduced ports, perhaps new smaller reversible USB
No magsafe
Comes in silver, space gray and gold color options
Will have multitasking

iPad Pro
12" retina display
Very energy efficient fanless design
Single USB port
No magsafe
Comes in silver, space gray and gold color options
"Rumors of multitasking"

People believe an iPad Pro will be a thing? All those iSheep analysts.
Where's the hard evidence for this?

And there's zero need for an even larger iPad. It just creates superfluous SKUs and makes choosing an iPad even harder. And more screen sizes for developers to deal with.

In that case MS paid MR too.

Exactly.

What will make the iPad Pro, well, "pro", as opposed to the regular old iPad (which is already used in some "pro" settings?

Here's the deal. Apple could make two separate product lines and merge them at some point in the future. But Apple's M.O. is usually to only put out products that they feel are ready and stick with that vision for them. What is the point of putting out two different products that are fairly similar, only to combine them later? Usually Apple will decide to not release something, or to release it when they feel they can do something different with it. Could Apple have released a Surface type device? Sure. But Apple waits until they feel they can make the experience incredible.

Well, Steve's no longer there, so anything can happen.

This is a new Apple, and as such, I take assumptions based on historical data with a grain of salt.

As always, we'll see, but so far "Post-Steve Apple" has left me both unimpressed and fearful (I won't like what they do).

What's the problem?

Apple has clearly been pouring R&D into getting OLED up to snuff for their own requirements, but obviously they still don't have something that outweighs their decision to use Oxide.

I don't get how you can claim OLED vs Oxide is better when these aren't two solid categories.

There are many variants of OLED screens just as there are LCD variants (TN, IPS, IGZO, etc).

Honestly, if the iPad Pro doesn't some kind of split-screen multitasking kind of thing (whatever implementation Apple comes up with) then I don't see the point.

Other than size, 3 most obvious distinguishing features would be:
1) split screen multitasking (though why they couldn't add this to the regular iPads I have no idea)
2) digitizer/stylus support
3) ports

The number of times I've been using my iPad and wished I could have two apps on screen at once? Zero. I don't see the need for additional ports either.

A great stylus experience (with Apple's full support) would be a selling point for me though.

MR, you should really start calling it the iPad Plus. If this product does indeed exist, I can't imagine it'd be called anything else.

yes,, USB 3.0 on a tablet... Thank you Apple... But u know they'll limit the port... So,, ok,, I may take this back. :p

(Disclaimer: Please do the right thing)

I guarantee that you're missing something. It's probably not OS X though. My guess would be pressure sensitivity, side by side apps (but still just iOS), and the ability to act as a second monitor and touch input for a Mac. All iPads would get the last feature, but I think it's no coincidence that the rumored iPad Pro and Macbook Air have identically sized screens.

Apple is the last of the line to get split screen ... as in proper side by side.

This could be maybe, THEY think screen relate may have not been big enough on the smaller iPad, but it's perfect for the 12.9 inch.

Even though,, this will come to previous iPad's too.... Everything else did.

At the moment, we kind of have a middle ground way of split screen, but u know Apple...

Once, its done to one, they'll expand it to all...

I thinks It's time for the Ipad to start having OS X on it. I love my IPad but I kinda like the Idea of the surface where you have a fully functional Computer and a tablet in one device
