I am quite interested in a 12" MBA with Retina Display, I wouldn't wanna be an early adopter for an ARM solution though - there are just too many variables.
I'm not really sure about a fanless Design either since I wanna have the option to "work" with it rather than just browse the web and listen to music. If they feature an all new revolutionary Invention in terms of cooling I would probably wait a weak or two for the internet to put those new machines through their paces before pulling the trigger.

Intel is the one making the fanless Broadwell processor, and they've already shown off fanless models. It has a lower thermal output because it's based on the 14nm process.

Please don't tell me the only way to get things done is with inefficient hardware.

As I said, if that's the case for you I suggest more time exercising and less on the web.

Apple has to cater to a population that includes a very high proportion of obese and unfit customers (potentially elderly as well, as the median population in many countries is aging). These people are not going to buy a computer that requires them to exercise more.

But it's not the weight that bothers me. I just like to carry the smallest possible bag because I think big laptop bags are ugly. I can force an MBA 11 into some iPad bags.

Then use a fan control app? Or try resetting the SMC as it's probably an issue with that?

How is your solution to a software/firmware problem the removal of a piece of hardware responsible for cooling?

Back in the day I got into overclocking & finally had a PC with NINE FREAKING HIGH PERFORMANCE fans you really could hear down the street. I am burned out on fans. I never want to ever hear another fan. If fans are so great why don't you attach a few to your phone????

This was kind of an odd reply. But okay...

If you were really into high performance overclocking why didn't you go the liquid cooling route? =/

Was this a Pentium 4 by chance? :p

Maybe Apple will let me trade in my late-2010 13" MBA for $650 toward a new one?
no, but eBay might

Macs have great resale value. Every time I want a new one, I just eBay my current one and recover a pretty large percentage of what I paid for it and end up paying just a few hundred $ more to upgrade. Try that with an Acer or Dell!

Macs used to have great resale value. 10-15 years ago you could get 80-90% of its sticker price 2-3 years after you bought it. Not so much now... more like 50% for one year.

It really is.

Most of those listings are either BIN or have no bids. The ones that do have bids are substantially lower.

Two years ago I bought a one-year-old (literally 365 days) 15" 2.0 GHz Quad MBP w/High-Res antiglare screen and a few extra features for my now-ex that would have cost about $2,200 new... for $1,125.

Late last year I bought myself a mid-2012 Quad 2.7 GHz MBP with the same HR Antiglare screen and a few extra features etc. that would have cost nearly $3,000 new for $1,600.

It really is that bad.

I think 50% depreciation in 1 year is definitely exaggerating. Perhaps if you have a last gen model and try to sell it right after a new gen – such as during the transition to retina.

I just checked what I could get for my late-2010 4GB 13" 128GB MBA on ebay per octothorpe8's suggestion (I have sold MBP's there before). Looks like I could pull $550 reliably for those numbers. Surprising really since it is now a nearly 4 year old machine. Thing is I just upgraded it with a 480GB Transcend SSD to see just how long this thing will last (it's not my only mac).

Despite only having 4GB of RAM and a 1.86Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo it still runs Aperture reasonably fine. My biggest complaint is the screen and upgrading to a current gen. won't help that.

If only the Macbook Pro/Retina was 5mm like the iMac.

However, the only way that would happen if ports were gone...

It's a nice dream though ...)

Did you see the post I just made above this one? :p

50% might be a bit of an exaggeration (and it *is* model-dependent-- higher-end I suppose will depreciate faster, and I imagine Mac Pros probably don't fall quite as quick), but not by much.

I did and the 2013 MBA's aren't 50% off their new prices in the link you provided! I'm looking at the sold prices, not BIN's (buy-it-nows) FYI. Your personal examples, buying cMBP's when the rMBP's had came out is precisely the point I was making — that when models switch form factors their value falls more precipitously. Watch what happens to the current MBP model prices when they switch designs.

Hum? I didn't provide a link! Someone else did, but notice they'd not selling... look for actual sale prices, not BINs or unbid-on items.

I'm not sure that's entirely true about the new models thing. When I bought the Early 2011 MBP, retina had *just* been introduced, and it was only an option.... they were still selling Classic MBPs.

I bought a cMBP because it's upgradeable, repairable, and I didn't need a 2880x1800 display- 1680x1050 is fine. I also wanted a DVD-RW just in case. And the cMBPs are a bit faster due to lesser thermal constraints =P

From what I've seen, the rMBPs aren't *that* much more expensive than the classics spec-for-spec.

Wow bro u work out???

No, seriously. If you think an iPad mini replaces a fully-functional MacBook, you are missing the concept. If you're so unconcerned with weight, why don't you replace your 2007 MacBook with a new iMac you can tote around and plug in wherever you go? I mean, that's fair, right? Same thing?

I've forgotten what the other arrogant fellow was even arguing (other than for better physical fitness, which I support anyway). Frankly, less mass and smaller dimensions in devices are almost always welcome. And if they aren't - well, Apple's going to go down that road regardless. I seriously doubt their ulterior motive is to keep us soft and weak.

This conversation is getting way to silly. I mean the difference is over 10 pounds, that's not even what would bother me it's the size not weight! For hat I would just carry around a Mac mini. That being said I just going to wait for the
iwatch and get a two liter
