Hi,

I am currently using an iPhone XS Max. I like it even if I find it a bit too big. So I was thinking of switching to the 12 Pro, which has a a perfect size to me. Considering that the 12 Pro Max is even bigger than the Xs Max, I thought I did my choice.
But then I saw the "extra features" of the 12 Pro Max, sensor shift and a bigger sensor. Photo is a key feature to me. I read a lot of things about those two improvements, and it seems to be massive. So what should we really expect in photo quality ?

Just go ahead with what you will be happy day to day.

I am going back and forth on that sensor shift OIS.

And even after reading leak on iPh13 Pro having sensor shift next year, I will still go ahead with 12 Pro.
Gotta do what a man gotta do.
I cannot keep the phablet in my pocket 😂

There is fairly large difference in size of the main sensor in Iphone 12 pro max and the other Iphones. While still much smaller than the flagship phones from the other brands its a good improvement. It will mainly affect to noise and bokeh.

Below is a chart which does a good job illustrating sensor sizes. Iphone 12 pro max should have the same sensor size with Huawei p30. Rest of the Iphones can be found from the bottom of the chart.

If both cameras were mounted side by side and both took the exact same photograph at the exact same time at the exact same exposure, you might in certain circumstances see a slight difference between the two photos if you studied it very closely.

For image stabilization, the Max will do better than the other phones. Good if you've got shakey hands but it's nothing like what the current GoPro can do.

In real time snapping of pictures and sharing them with friends or social media, the amount of times you’re going to say “dammit if only I went with the Max” will be few to none. Go with the size you want and don’t worry about the camera differences.

The advantage of a larger sensor size in the iPhone 12 pro max is to allow the pixels to be larger, thereby increasing light sensitivity, improving low-light photos. If a different phone has a larger sensor, but more/smaller pixels, that phone will be inferior in low-light situations.

The combination of the sensor shift OIS + larger pixels should result in noticeable better low light/long exposure pics - so if you take a lot of those types of pics, then this becomes an important factor in your choice.

They spent a total of three minutes focusing on the Max-exclusive camera features. That's not insignificant, in my opinion.

We'll know more when reviewers get their hands on both models and do in-depth side-by-side comparisons.

Thank you for your advices.

Do we know when the reviewers will get the device? Any chance to see any hands-on this week ?

They probably already have them. Reviews are usually published the wednesday before launch day. So expect some time next week.

Keep in mind that the reviewers may not be getting the Max until closer to its release.

Go with the one that fits your needs 85-90% of the time rather than 10-15%. Unless you are shooting a lot at night, you won’t really care. That’s how I decided (though I’ll wait for reviews).

Here is my thing. notch, still there. 120 vs 60 screen still not there. USB-c still not there. MagSafe may need to be improved after issues will be found (potentially). So the iPhone 12 versions thought great, and would like to keep for 3 years, probably will get a few of these updates in next years model.

so it’s not the end of the world if you don’t have a slightly better camera for one year. Coming from the X. I’m happy with it. Funny thing is, the only difference I feel so far is the camera itself. Oh and the screen. I have to set it to half or less on brightness because it’s that bright.

Holy ****, the P30 Pro makes insane photos

I’m also starting to have doubts. I already ordered a 12 Pro but the delivery is scheduled for Nov 19 so I don’t know..

That sensor shift OIS sure sounds appealing and maybe worth it since I shoot a lot of video but other than that, having that big of a phone in my pocket might be an inconvenience. I had a 7 Plus in the past and it was okay I guess.

Still, I don’t know if I should cancel my order and wait for the Max or not.

Am going iPhone 12 pro max for the vary 1st time since the max Came out can’t wait to per order mind I have the iPhone 11 right now

Sounds like you should - the delivery is only 2 weeks away, and the preorder just a few days :) I'm getting the max, coming from iPhone 7 that I've used for 5 years

Good, sure, but why settle for less? You can't recreate these memories later in better quality.
You won’t notice a huge difference in quality and for the money Apple charge for the Max you could get a half decent camera if quality is most important. These phones all have decent cameras for phones and all seem to have minor trade offs. The Max’s biggest disadvantage is its cumbersome size and I’d be happy to forego a small camera difference to maintain a pocketable phone personally.

A small camera like?
