Other 12 Pro Max : BIG difference in photo quality over 12 Pro ?

Size of the pro max is an issue in your post and you also mentioned a half decent camera should take better pictures than the pro max so on that basis I figure you meant the camera would also be small.
Maybe the question I should have asked was which half decent camera would you suggest?

I wasn’t relating camera to size when I made that statement. I carry my phone every day and the phone I have now is an excellent point and shoot camera. When I want to take photos on a family day out I take my Canon EOS 5D MKIV. In that instance my camera is better than any smartphone on the market and I’ve got the quality I need. The camera is massive, but thankfully I don’t have to carry it everywhere I go. It costs a similar price to a 12 Pro Max too, hence my comment on cost. I could get a decent bridge camera which would be much smaller and under £1K which would probably answer your question better if you’re someone who wants a small, half decent camera that is similarly cumbersome to the Max.
I often see comments on here that say: ‘people who like photography and need the best camera, buy the 12 Pro Max’. They really don’t as the cameras on all the iPhone 12’s are great for what they are.
Thanks. I have a couple dslrs for better than cellphone quality picture taking. However I find them more cumbersome than even a max would ever be. I’m contemplating a 12 max for that same reason as I believe there will be too many moments where I’m simply not able to carry even a smaller mirrorless dslr.
The quality of cellphone pictures seems to be improving faster than the size of dslrs becoming smaller. I think that’s why many are saying the 12 pro max if you’re into photography as you’re most likely to have that camera on you and the quality should be better than the pro.
I highly doubt there will be a huge difference to most people. Until phones get drastically bigger sensors, improvements won't be dramatic. Just plain physics folks.

The 12 Pro Max will undoubtedly be a fantastic phone and I wouldn’t try and put anyone off getting it. It’s about weighing up what is more important in the package you want. I’m into photography but don’t want a huge phone so the Max isn’t appealing. Others may want the biggest screen available and the trade off is acceptable. I don’t think there is a huge difference between a Pro and non-Pro iPhone this year and it’s all about personal preference more than huge technological leaps. It’s nice to finally have a choice and not be worried you’re missing out.
