I woke up yesterday morning and grabbed my 12 Pro Max getting out of bed. Stood up and dropped it about 3 feet onto the carpet. Picked it up, all was fine visibly of course but Face ID wouldn't work. Tried 3 times, no Face ID. Shut down the phone, restarted, no Face ID. Erased all settings, phone came back up, no Face ID. Reset the phone to factory, no Face ID. Just kept saying to hold the iPhone closer, move it further away, hold it higher, hold it lower etc...

Spoke with Verizon tech since Im in CA and every Apple store is closed  Tech had me set the front facing camera to portrait mode and see if it worked. Sure enough, it didnt, no matter where I held the phone. One of the little sensors in the front of the phone got damaged, from a 3 foot drop, onto carpet, with a quality TPU case on. Replacement phone on the way. How poorly are these things built? Pathetic.

Probably just a matter of luck. Could have been defective to begin with. I’ve dropped my iPhones onto carpet, asphalt, hardwood, etc and they survived just fine (in a case)
One exception was when I dropped my XS Max while hiking from quite a height. The case prevented the glass from shattering, but the OLED panel still broke. FaceID worked just fine.

Sometimes we’re just out of luck with our stuff. Good luck with the next one!

Take it back to Apple and deny all knowledge lol.

Yes. Ive dropped previous iPhones on asphalt, concrete and hardwood, even without a case and never had any issues with the cameras or sensors. The 12s dont seem built nearly as well judging by this.

How many iPhone 12 units have you dropped? Like I mentioned, perhaps you received a defective phone with a part that was flirting with failure and the drop did it in. i feel that if the new phones were all built with a poor quality FaceID camera, we would be seeing more reports out there.

I don’t have a iPhone 12 so I can’t comment on build quality.

It’s a defect. Bring it to Apple and have them service or replace it. You don’t have to admit to a small drop.

This is why I have AppleCare and Otterbox. I’ve dropped phones from ten feet without a scratch and I’ve had a phone inside of an Otterbox fall off a toilet paper holder and crack. It was maybe two feet off the ground! It’s about luck.

Almost forgot I had a Samsung Galaxy S5 fall off the bed onto carpet and shattered bad. No case though.

These types of faults are covered under warranty since there‘s not technically damage so there should really be no fuss over it. But yes, this generation being more drop-proof is overhyped. It takes a long while for the screen to get cracked with the Ceramic Shield, but other issues can still pop up from a light drop.

It's not your fault. It's the asphalt.

Sometimes you drop them just the right (or wrong) way and they break. It’s kind of a luck of the draw. Plenty of people have dropped their phones from higher heights on harder surfaces and barely get a scratch.

Dropped mine from about 2.5’ onto hardwood floor a few times. No case. Not even a scuff. Face ID works. Everything works. Sorry about your luck. But you shouldn’t assume the overall quality of something based off just your one experience when there are millions out there, most of which have no issues and wouldn’t have the issue your having. That’s what’s pathetic.

Yes exactly a defect and you unluckily got it. I'd drop my phones many times and its fine even with a concrete drop. Any time you mass produce items there's always a few that are defective, just the way of things.
