I didn't suggest that. The blame is on you for dropping the phone. Instead of taking ownership, you have decided to blame Apple for the sensor being broken due to the fall. It seems no matter what, you find a way to complain and blame Apple, even when it isn't their fault. Maybe you should stick to Android.
Companies have a responsibility to their consumers who pay their bills to make devices that won't break on a 3 foot drop onto carpeting. Especially at the absurdly high prices Apple sells their iPhones at. Ive had cheap crap $30 Chinese phones from Walmart take a ton more abuse. Saying that its my fault their poorly built phone couldn't handle a drop onto carpeting is also absurd. At least Verizon stepped up and sent me out a new one.

Yes. Ive dropped previous iPhones on asphalt, concrete and hardwood, even without a case and never had any issues with the cameras or sensors. The 12s dont seem built nearly as well judging by this.

That’s it - as others have indicated - you can’t judge by this. Or you can, but with such a small sample size and uncontrolled conditions, it’s purely anecdotal.

There are so many variables here you literally can’t draw any conclusions about the build quality of the iPhone 12. It could be worse than before, it could be better, it could be the same - this tells you nothing.

And yes, it sucks. I get it.

It could fall from 1 feet onto a kitten-shaped cloud and break if certain conditions were met. I’ve also seen numerous videos where people drop it from 3 meters onto concrete and the phone is fine. It’s luck. There are so many things to consider here - it could’ve fallen with a very specific angle with very specific combination of outside factors, it could’ve been faulty in some way and this just accelerated the process, etc. My advice would be to try and get Apple to fix it - if there is no outside damage (since, as you say it fell on the carpet) - you can probably get it fixed under warranty (just say it stopped working).

But I wouldn’t go in with this “you have a responsibility towards bill-paying customers” **** if I were you. Be polite and take it in for service.

Edit: I see you have a replacement phone on the way - and you’re still unhappy? You don’t get it’s bad luck and it could happen to anything? Things like this can happen to literally any product. My advice: be more realistic about things and you’ll be happier. The iPhones are built great. Some of the most reliable phones on the market. These things happen.

While not onto carpet, last night when getting out of the car, my iPhone 12 fell about a foot, maybe foot and a half onto the ground. It landed flat on the back which subsequently broke the back glass and the wide angle lens.

I guess that’s the chance you take when you go without a case - I have the clear one from Apple but had taken it off. Luckily I have AC+ and will get it replaced tomorrow.

Really?
I’ve never had my Xbox Controller break from a 3 foot drop onto carpeting.
I’ve never had my PS 4 controller break from a 3 foot drop onto carpeting.
I’ve never had my Apple TV remote break from a 3 foot drop onto carpeting.
I‘ve never had my TV remote break from a 3 foot drop onto carpeting.
I’ve never had my Roku remote break from a 3 foot drop onto carpeting.
I’ve never had any Canon, Sony, Nikon etc..camera or lens I’ve owned break from a 3 foot drop onto carpeting
‘I’ve never had any other phone I’ve owned break from a 3 foot drop onto carpeting.

I’ve dropped most of these thing onto much harder surfaces and some from higher up. Hell. I’ve had a Canon camera and lens take a 60 foot tumble down a mountain side in the desert and it still functioned properly.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max is poorly built

I dropped my 12 Pro max 4 feet onto a hardwood floor and it didn't break. Really.

Like has been pointed out, if the right conditions are met anything could break from a drop from even 1 foot. It’s not an indication of how well built something is.

Dropped my phone from chest height onto a hard wood floor just last week. Both my wife and I had a good 2 second stare of amazement that I'd actually do something like that (rare for me). Phone is fine. lol.

OP's threads are always fun to read. Far more exciting life than I have. :)

Yeah, it's just a matter of luck. My heavy 12.9 Pro has fallen about 3 feet twice on the same hardwood floor without a problem.

I used to work with large panes of tempered glass. We would show its strength by pounding on a pane with a rubber mallet. But every now and then, a pane would literally explode in your hands while just carrying it. And chip an edge or corner - boom.

Replacement phone on the way. How poorly are these things built? Pathetic.

Yup. And all of them could break from a 3 foot drop onto carpeting if you had bad luck, like you did with your iPhone.

Seriously, how do you explain all those videos where people drop their iPhone 12s on concrete and nothing happens? I mean, if it regularly breaks from dropping on carpeting?

For the love of God just give it up. Stop with this crap that they are all poorly built. You have had a bad experience. Many have posted here including me saying we’ve dropped ours and they were absolutely fine.

For someone who was so vehemently against even buying one in the first place, I’m surprised you are still here.

And yes, really.

I dropped a lot of iPhones and never broke any of them. Meanwhile a friend of mine had his iPhone for a day and it slipped out of his pocket as he was kneeling down and it broke around the Home Screen. Poor soul. It’s really about luck.

Agree, it all depends on where it hits the ground. I’ve had iPhones fall off tables onto cement and sustain hardly any damage. It’s all the luck of the draw.

The one you had. Any of the other products above could have been a lemon. You never know until you find one.

Why did you buy it in the first place? We endured weeks and weeks of you saying how underwhelming the leaks were and how you thought the 12 Pro Max was delayed until at least December. You’ve criticised it constantly and yet you paid over £1100 for a device you hated!? You don’t make very informed decisions by your own admission and now you’re complaining because you’ve dropped and broken your very expensive device that you didn’t like anyway lol.

I wish I cared to be honest and had some sympathy, but I don’t. Get rid of it, get an Android and live happily ever after. Whether you like iPhones or not is totally irrelevant to nearly everybody here.

Data Point:
I dropped my 12 PM twice today. 1st time was reaching for it on night stand and it fell about 2 ft onto hardwood floor. No damage.

2nd time 12 PM fell about 3ft, hit glass corner table and landed on hardwood. Screen protector shattered on bottom right corner. I took off the protector and ESR case, and the iPhone was intact and fully functional.

Guess I am getting used to the increased weight coming from a XS Max. Lesson learned to be more vigilant handling it.

Have you ever considered upgrading to a more plush carpeting?... maybe a nice shag?

But that is completely impossible as Apple have MASSIVE build quality issue according to the OP. You are obviously lying and that your phone is now in a million pieces because none of them will withstand a drop onto the floor from any height.

The OP has used an enormous pool of data to reach his factually driven observations (n=1) so therefore, you must be mistaken and that your phone is now irreparably damaged.

Jason

To be fair.. the people who used to build iPhones are no longer building your iPhones. There is a whole new fresh crew, in a fresh factory. Your new phone is being assembled by a bunch of noobs. I drop my XS Max daily and she’s good. Love my phone. Don’t know how much I would love it if I didn’t have it in a case though.
