So OP breaks phone, Apple replaces and they blame Apple, lol. Best post of the year, 2021 here :)
If your product can't survive a 3 foot drop onto carpeting, with a protective case on it, that's not a good product IMO. Its ridiculous to be honest. I can drop a wine glass onto the same surface from 3 feet and nothing would happen to it. Apple isn't replacing my phone, Verizon is. So that's some good news at least. Maybe I will get one that doesn't have a garbage yellow tint to its screen this time around. Guess that's luck of the draw too...

Probably just a matter of luck. Could have been defective to begin with. I’ve dropped my iPhones onto carpet, asphalt, hardwood, etc and they survived just fine (in a case)
One exception was when I dropped my XS Max while hiking from quite a height. The case prevented the glass from shattering, but the OLED panel still broke. FaceID worked just fine.

Yeah seems so.

I dropped both my Xs Max and current 11 Pro Max on hard floors face first and both still worked fine, incl. FaceID.

Dropped the Xs Max one morning late 2019 while rushing in to work after parking my car, was making my way to the lifts in the underground parking, got a call, as I meant to put my phone in my pocket I mistakenly flung it and it slammed on the floor face first, the tempered glass screen protector broke but the actual screen and phone were fine, along with FaceID, phone was in my Apple Silicone Case.

My 11 Pro Max I dropped while shopping for grocery middle of last year during our first high level lockdown, was looking at my grocery list while browsing the meat section and my phone was in my hand while is grabbing some packets, was doing too many things at once and mistakenly let the phone slip out and it hit the tile floor face first, again, tempered glass screen protector broke, the actual screen was fine and so was the phone along with FaceID, it was in my Apple Leather Case.

Don’t think I have ever had a phone have major internal damage after a that doesn’t damage it’s screen, but I have heard it happens, guess it’s all down to angle and your luck of course.

EDIT:

Interesting, as I exited this thread I see another thread of OPs, his phone seems to have also had a overheating issue. Sounds like it was a lemon of a device.

It happens. But just because it happened to you doesn’t mean the phone is built wrong. I’ve dropped my previous phones countless of times - all were in a case w/a screen protector. Only ONE phone that I’ve dropped caused for screen damage and that was my Galaxy S5. I dropped it in my ex’s room in the ONE spot of the room that didn’t have carpet - just my luck lol was about the same drop as yours, about 3 feet and the internal part of the screen cracked. That was my fault, not Samsung’s. Drops happen. You got it replaced, it’s all good. No need to bash the product. If you don’t like it all that much, get another phone! There are plenty out there for you to choose from.

Lol at this post. My XS couldn’t handle splash of water when the Face ID stopped working. Went to store, got replacement. Simple. Get android then.

Eek. Maybe it's due to my case but my 11 Pro Max has hit the ground a few times from bathroom sink level. No damage luckily.

Dropped my 12 PM from attic opening 10 feet onto carpeted floor. Was in a UAG case so the phone was fine.

Replacement phone on the way. How poorly are these things built? Pathetic.
Poorly built? Come on. You wouldn't have such a great warranty if so. In 13 years of iPhones, have you heard of another case like yours?

Just anecdotally, I've dropped my Mini perhaps 8 times since launch day. No damage, but just as meaningless as your drop. Frankly if you really thought it was so poorly built, Samsung would have a new customer.

Tried that and I cant. Verizon will only replace like for like.

I woke up yesterday morning and grabbed my 12 Pro Max getting out of bed. Stood up and dropped it about 3 feet onto the carpet. Picked it up, all was fine visibly of course but Face ID wouldn't work. Tried 3 times, no Face ID. Shut down the phone, restarted, no Face ID. Erased all settings, phone came back up, no Face ID. Reset the phone to factory, no Face ID. Just kept saying to hold the iPhone closer, move it further away, hold it higher, hold it lower etc...

Spoke with Verizon tech since Im in CA and every Apple store is closed  Tech had me set the front facing camera to portrait mode and see if it worked. Sure enough, it didnt, no matter where I held the phone. One of the little sensors in the front of the phone got damaged, from a 3 foot drop, onto carpet, with a quality TPU case on. Replacement phone on the way. How poorly are these things built? Pathetic.
I see nothing pathetic about the Face ID sensor getting damaged. It is very sensitive hardware meant to provide the best security.

The sensor failed because of you.

I believe it's the luck of the draw so to speak.

My xs max, due to my stupidity, dropped off a window ledge about 5 feet up onto a hard wood floor. The max was in an apple silicon case. I was lucky, no damage whatsoever. Was it the case? The way the phone landed? Who knows, but I definitely got lucky.

Oh my, I wasn't aware it was so sensitive and delicate. Shall I handle my iPhone with gloves and carry it around on a fluffy pillow everywhere just in case?

I didn't suggest that. The blame is on you for dropping the phone. Instead of taking ownership, you have decided to blame Apple for the sensor being broken due to the fall. It seems no matter what, you find a way to complain and blame Apple, even when it isn't their fault. Maybe you should stick to Android.

I've seen drops were you think damn, this thing's ***** toast, and miraculously it's fine. Other times like you said OP, minor fall onto carpet and no bueno. Luck of the draw I suppose...
One of my co-workers dropped her iPhone while getting on the elevator and it slipped through the space between the elevator and the floor and fell fourteen stories. She got Maintenance to retrieve it and brought it up to the office to show us. It was in several pieces. While we stood there talking about it, the damn phone rang!

I begged her to put together a video and send it to Apple, but I don't think she ever did.

I’ve dropped my iPhone 12 about 6 times onto a hard floor since I’ve had it, two of those were on Christmas Day. I use a good case though. I don’t think the phone is overly delicate to protected impacts, you should be fine.

From what I read in this forum in various iPhone, iPad, and Macbook issues, seems that Apple has a serious quality issues on their internal components/cables and connectors, that a single out-of-scenario external force as well as wear and tear can wreak havoc randomly. (Macbook Pro flex cable issues, iPad backlight issues, iPhone 7 issues, etc). I mean it's one thing if Apple immediately help their customers with swift replacements, but often times Apple themselves are in denial.

hopefully OP can get a replacement swiftly.

Apple quality is second to none.

From the thousands of forum users who bought the new devices how many have issues? Less than 5% I’d say, which for a mass produced electronic device that is so packed with technology and available in different sizes, colours and configurations, is pretty low. Wear and tear is one thing, dropping a small electronic device onto any surface from a height is something very different.

Blow that same percentage up to the millions of devices sold... still a very small amount have issues. The phones last for years, literally. No other hardware comes close from experience, and it still holds resale value. That’s the sign of a quality product.

If it were a car, and it had a little crash that damaged sensors etc, it’s still a crash... no one would be surprised. In the same respect, a drop is still a drop. Not meant to happen, sadly it does but that’s not apple’s problem really and they didn’t have to exchange the device.

Did you just compare a phone dropped on a carpet to a car crash?
Okay I'm done. :p

After all your comments about the delay in the iPhone 12 launch and how Samsung managed things better, you still got a 12 and continue to be unhappy about it. Anyone else confused?
He most likely didn't buy an iPhone. Just likes to complain it seems. Cranky dude for sure.

If he DID get an iPhone he sure does have a very dysfunctional relation with Apple though. Kinda like a person who keeps complaining about his/hers SO but still keeps going back after breakups.

Maybe his friends should hold an intervention and get him an Android phone, so his nightmare relationship can finally be over.

That's why his iPhone broke from such a small fall. It's called karma.
