Don't buy the pro max with 2TB storage then. Cheaper options exist.

Either I am holding onto my 16 pro max 512gb black, or I am just going to get the 17 Pro Max or Air, in prep of price increase for the 18 Pro

Honestly, I'd just hold onto it. But then I'm still holding on to my 12 Pro. It does the things I need. Aside from battery it's still perfectly fine, but I can get that replaced, and I honestly couldn't care less about all the AI crap.

We hang on to phones for a long time. My 13 Pro is still great, but it's getting a little long in the tooth performance-wise w/iOS 26.5, has no Siri AI possibility, and I have a young teen daughter waiting for a hand-me-down. I guess I'll get an 18 Pro when it pops in September? Or maybe I should just get a slightly cheaper 17 Pro when the 18 arrives? Ooooh, maybe then I can afford a 17 Pro Max! #deepthoughtshahaha

None of those reasons are compelling enough. It just sounds like more micro-improvements.

If the A20 SoC comes with 16GB of RAM, that would be compelling, as it would future-proof the device and put it on par with what laptops can do today.

I am riding that same horse and if the price jumps too much I might as well ride it to the 20th anniversary one. I don't *need* a new phone, but the camera is getting long in the tooth and a touch of FOMO that there are so many software features that didn't trickle down to my model in iOS 26 and now 27.

Not a compelling set of features to be fair. Probably still has 12GB too which might be fine now but will likely result in some gimping in a couple of years when 16 is the base due to ever hungrier local AI.

The weight gain is most unwelcome too.

The smarter move is a 17 Pro if the discount is reasonable. You won't miss much if anything. Or wait and see what the regular 18 offers.

I always thought that the goal of more power effcient 2nm chips was to have a smaller battery and a slimmer device that has the same battery life as the previous generation. Change my mind.

I guess I am that person this year, but I have been a yearly upgrader for quite some time and this is the least differentiating feature list from the previous year’s model as any I can remember.

Agreed. If photography is your thing I can see it for the upgraded camera. If you’re not, I’m not seeing a good reason, but rest assured there will be some features in iOS 27 or 28 that will require the 18 or higher to work. That’s the Apple way.

Apple's influence over potential buyers is legendary.

The masters of smoke and mirrors marketing creating FOMO and charging a premium, price increase or not plenty of devices will be sold. Even when upgrades and new features are minimal, the company prevails.

Any list of reasons to upgrade is nearly irrelevant, it's good to be Apple.

Can't tell if you're joking or not, but if you really are using an XR as your daily driver, please for the love of all things Holy, upgrade to at least a used iPhone Pro 14. 😂 (Or a 15 Pro, just to be on USB-C moving forward)

You can get them for not too much, and just the camera and battery life improvements alone will be 100% worth it.

Still using my 13 Pro Max. If you have a supported iPhone with an OLED 120hz screen, there is very little reason to upgrade.
