Well I have about $1200 and I just want to go somewhere different, I live on the outskirts of Los Angeles and I just want to get out of here for 2 or 3 days, I want to just go somewhere by myself my laptop and my DSLR.

Just a few days going around taking pictures and forgetting about life back home.

I was thinking about saving a bit more and going to japan but I don't have a passport so im just going to pass on any foreign trips.

What do you guys think, either flying or driving? Something scenic.

England! come visit me!

Where are you finding $399 flights for, the cheapest I can get is like $750?

I signed up on United Airlines' mailing list. They generally put out their weekly fare specials every Tuesday. Frontier, US Airways, Southwest, and a couple others do the same.

Last month they had Denver to Heathrow for $455USD roundtrip for a week's stay.

Yes you know the catch there don't you? Try staying in london for a week. You'll have blown thousands of dollars easy.

Too bad the OP didn't ask about this last June. $1200 would have gotten him to Melbourne or Sydney and back 4 times:

On top of that, each trip would have been on Qantas' new A380s, the first of which just completed its first flight from Melbourne to LAX.

I would not recommend going overseas. $1200 barely covers the cost of a ticket to Asia, and actual day-to-day spending in Europe would offset any inexpensive flight you could find.

As others suggested, San Francisco is a good choice, whether you fly or drive up there. The surrounding areas have some great drives, too, from Monterrey in the south to Marin, Bodega Bay, Sonoma, and Mendocino to the north.

Someone also suggested going to Santa Fe, which would be a great drive for you going through central/northern Arizona. Santa Fe is a gorgeous and charming town with plenty of history and culture.

If you do want to fly somewhere, you can always find low fares to Mexico. Costa Rica is also a hot, up-and-coming destination with many low fare nonstops to the States. For more flights, I suggest keeping an eye on the Kayak Buzz site.

Have fun.

Get a passport (I think you should have one anyway), which is around $100 plus a recent photograph (and a copy) @ your local post office. You might need to save up a bit more, not sure, but I vote New Zealand! :D

Go big!
