Apple will expand ProMotion to the standard iPhone models in two years, according to Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants. ProMotion was first introduced on the iPhone 13 Pro models in 2021 and remains exclusive to Pro models for now.

In a tweet today, Young provided a roadmap outlining various display-related technologies coming to future iPhones. Notably, the roadmap indicates that low-power LTPO display technology will be expanded to the standard iPhones in 2025, which Young said will enable ProMotion on these devices, allowing the display to ramp up to a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and video content when necessary.

ProMotion would also allow the display to ramp down to a more power-efficient refresh rate. iPhone 13 Pro models can ramp down to 10Hz, while iPhone 14 Pro models can go as low as 1Hz, allowing for an always-on display that can show the Lock Screen's clock, widgets, notifications, and wallpaper even when the device is locked.

The roadmap starts in 2021 and ends in 2027

All in all, the roadmap suggests that the so-called "iPhone 17" and "iPhone 17 Plus" will feature ProMotion, and likely an always-on display too. Apple has routinely expanded Pro-only features to standard models over time, such as OLED technology, and the Dynamic Island is also expected to expand to all four iPhone 15 models later this year.

Young also outlined when Apple will adopt under-screen Face ID and cameras in future iPhones, which we discuss in more detail in a separate story. Over the past few years, the analyst has accurately leaked many display-related details about future Apple products, including ProMotion coming to the iPhone 13 Pro and MacBook Pro, the sixth-generation iPad mini featuring a larger 8.3-inch display, and much more.

Are they just going to call it "Motion", then?

It'll be interesting to see what the next "Pro-only" features are.
The Pro in Pro-Motion may not mean ‘Professional’ but rather Pro as in Positive (like Pros/cons). Anyway they will then add some new tech to the Pro models to differentiate further like solid state batteries, Mini LED screens etc.

Good news i suppose, but Apple should have released faster refresh screens of some kind to the regular iPhones 2 years ago.

We need 1Hz and always-on display on regular iPhones ASAP, think about the possibilities iOS-wise.

One example: the ringer switch (and its glanceable red thingy) could be replaced with a glanceable always-on red “slashed bell” symbol on the display. Maybe that’s what they’ll do on the 15 Pro.

The extremely slow pace with which some very basic features trickle down makes it really hard to get excited about the standard iPhones (which no doubt is by design).

Say about Samsung what you will, but even the entry level S23 has the whole camera spiel and a high refresh rate display. For all intents and purposes, there's a clear difference between the standard model and the Ultra that is not just cameras and better display.

Either on purpose or not, Apple seems to be running out of ideas to really set their Pro line apart, so they just hold back the standard model.

Remember when Apple use to make fun of Microsoft because of the all Windows SKU's. Now they have become that company.
Seriously bring it back to only two iphones 3 colours max. A big one and a small one. Sell down the previous years models that were already produced at a discount till they sell out. Seems so much better for controlling inventory overages and e waste as well.

Why does it seem like this is a very slow transition? 120Hz Pro Motion has been around for so long now.
Probably cost issues, availability issues, but more importantly, Apple wants to differentiate the Non-pro vs Pro models as it wants people to pay a premium for the Pro Motion screen.
Apple will always find ways for people to pay the Apple Tax for features.

Of course features move downstream and that is true of nearly everything made and regularly improved.

There is no Apple Tax if you are satisfied with your purchase. Nice things cost more than crappy things. Desirable things cost more than undesirable or unremarkable things. True across the board. As for the validity of the tax take a look at phone and computer resale prices versus Apple product resale prices. The supposed tax is gone at the end.
