Today I placed my order for 13" Air with i7, 512 gb ssd and 8 gb ram version. I like retina display for sure but Macbook Air is something different and i find it much more special than a Pro. I hope to write my best programs on air.

To compare apples to apples, you should be comparing 4GB/128GB configurations for both, so the difference is only $200 not $400 ($1099 base MBA vs $1299 base rMBP). I think for $200, the rMBP is the winner hands-down. 2.4 GHz i5 vs. 1.3 GHz i5. Intel Iris Graphics vs. Intel HD 5000 Graphics. Retina display. PCIe-based flash storage. It's only 0.5 lbs heavier and still 0.71" vs. 0.11-0.68" thin. The footprint is actually smaller on the rMBP - 12.35" x 8.62" vs. 12.8" x 8.94". And finally, Dual Thunderbolt 2 ports + HDMI on the rMBP.

I think you get better results by setting the price and comparing what you get for the money, that is compare two $1099 configurations, or two $1299 configurations. I'd also check out refurbished units, again at the same price.

I ordered a 13" yesterday with 8gb and 516 gb sad i had a 15 mbp before but sold it for $500 its from 2009 and got the education discount so it was easy for me mostly school work no crazy video editing or anything so it will work for me I like the portability.

I went into the store hoping to get the base model 13" Air and upgrade the RAM to 8gb for future proofing. Unfortunately the local store here didn't have the Air with the 8gb RAM, and they had the Haswell rMBP 13" 8gb RAM/256gb on SALE at 10%, so I bit the bullet and got the rMBP instead.

I'm loving it actually. It is very very LIGHT from what I was used to (I was using a 15" HP notebook before). The Air is lighter for sure, but I think this is plenty light for me. The footprint is smaller than the Air also which I like. I think in terms of portability, it is right up there with the Air.

Plus it has the gorgeous retina display... I think I would have been disappointed to not have gotten the rMBP...

Yeah, the stores seem to only carry the standard config models - meaning the ones that you see listed on the site. If you need to make any adjustments to the standard config, unfortunately it will need to be BTO.

With that said, congrats on the purchase! It's definitely an awesome machine. :apple:

Just noticed that you got the exact same machine - liking it so far???

I absolutely adore it. :D

I giggle like a little school girl at just how fast the system boots with the PCIE SSD drive. It even beats out my 2012 Mac Mini with a Toshiba SATA SSD drive (albeit by less than 10 seconds, but still...). The best part is when closing the lid, which puts the laptop to sleep, only to open the lid again and see that the system instantly wakes itself up! We're talking like shut-iPhone-screen-off/wake-iPhone-back-up fast!

.......

The rMBP also has more ports, particularly two USB 3.0 ports, which to me is quite valuable as I do tend to use a lot of peripherals.

========================

Just fyi.....the MBA also has two USB 3.0 ports. One on each side of the machine.

Haha, thanks. Someone else pointed out that mistake of mine before. :p

I have recently come across Thunderbolt docks, which can be of great benefit to both MBA and MBP users alike, especially when working with a multitude of peripherals (at a premium cost of course).

So, I just read through most of this thread (sorry to resurrect a thread from October of 2013) and I'd just like to ask: even though the HD 5000 (or the Iris 5100 for that matter) isn't ==GREAT== at video rendering (be it in Adobe Premiere Pro or HandBrake etc) does it get the job done? I go to Japanese pop culture conventions several times a year and I make video compilations of my experiences. Would a maxed out MBA 13" (of either the current generation or the rumored refreshes next week) work for me? I do value battery life, as I travel to these cons for sometimes 8-10 hours on a bus or train, so it'd be nice to stay entertained. Sure the buses and trains have AC outlets, but I'd rather not use them if I have the option of 10-12h+ battery life in the MBA. As for Retina display vs the MBA's 1440x900 non-Retina display? That's a deciding factor as well...

I have an i7 3770k Ivy Bridge custom system running Funtoo Linux (writing this post using it) that I can boot into Windows for any intensive tasks like gaming or more advanced video splicing/editing, but for an on the go machine I am torn between (when I can afford it) getting a nicely spec'd rMBP: http://store.apple.com/us/product/G...-26ghz-quad-core-intel-i7-with-retina-display or a maxed out (i7 CPU, 512 GB SSD, 8GB RAM etc) 13" MBA.

Thanks.

Despite having owned a 2013 MBA, if you're sticking with Apple hardware, I'd go with the rMBP purely because of the screen. Obviously you get the extra kick, too.

In a world of high PPI displays from phones to tablets to notebooks, the 2013 MBA's screen now looks plain bad. My wife still has one but I just can't go back to using it's blurry pixelated display (I switched to a Yoga2Pro because I still needed something lightweight compared to the rMBP).

I hope Apple comes up with a rMBA soon but it sounds like the next updates will be incremental and late 2014 is the best we can hope for. Hopefully the rumours are wrong.
