Apple began accepting orders for the new 13-inch MacBook Pro last Friday, with some custom configurations with upgraded specs already facing August delivery estimates.

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro features the same design as the previous model, including the Touch Bar. The only notable change is the addition of the M2 chip with an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU. Apple said the M2 chip has up to an 18% faster CPU, up to a 35% faster GPU, and up to a 40% faster Neural Engine compared to the M1 chip.

With the M2 chip, the 13-inch MacBook Pro can be configured with up to 24GB of unified memory, compared to a max of 16GB for the M1 chip. In line with the previous model, the notebook also supports up to 2TB of SSD storage.

Pricing for the 13-inch MacBook Pro continues to start at $1,299 in the United States, with silver and space gray color options available.

Apple has yet to announce an order date for the new MacBook Air with the M2 chip.

Why should I choose 13" MB Pro:
Battery life of MB Air is worse, MB Air has no touch bar, MB Air has thermal throttle problems, the "bigger" screen of MB Air is only beside the notch and has no practical advantage. In my preferred configuration MB Air is even more expensive than MB Pro.

Except the bigger screen does have an advantage, just like it does on the 14"/16" MBP - the menu bar is now not a part of the main resolution, so you have an actual 1440x900 area to work with the menu residing above the 900 pixel height.

No. Same number of pixels in width. Only very few 64 pixels more at MB Air in height. But MB Air needs the 64 pixels for the notch.

The touchbar is an advantage for the MBP? Really? That's a first.

I have a MBP with the touch bar. IMHO it's a gimmick. Totally pointless.

I don't dislike it, but I won't mourn it's departure. Like when my old boss retired and left in the dark of night.

I didn't celebrate his departure, but I didn't cry over it either. I didn't dislike him, just the way he treated people and it was interesting to see what would come next.

I can certainly live without the touch bar....

the notch causes more problems than is worth any "advantage" from the few extra pixels that it comes with. not only does it ruin the aesthetics of the display area, it also ruins the menubar itself.

normally the menubar scales along with the display resolution, so that it appears proportional. but with a notch, the menubar is now always the same size, regardless of resolution (in fact, it's bigger than ever which looks rather unappealing). so at higher resolutions (especially for me, since i run my 13" display at its native 2560x1600 resolution), this notched menubar would look just downright gigantic & ridiculous.

also, some of us actually use the real estate in the menubar (ie - lotsa status indicators, menulets, etc.) which the notch interferes with.

small bezels are far superior & preserve the screen's 4 straight edges (it's not like the M2 MBA truly gained any real estate - the extra 0.3" is only due to the notch+menubar row, so anything fullscreen is the same anyway). the notch just isn't worth all the problems it causes & it can't die soon enough (plus it just looks like total crap).

This model feels like a money grab. Old design, huge bezels, no MagSafe, outdated camera, ... It’s a bit sad Apple has the audacity to release this model.
Yup. but hey... you can now use your iPhone's camera 🤣

But it will solve the issue with all current MacBooks... the 1080p camera is still garbage.
Yeah I am unimpressed with the 1080 cameras on the redesigned MBP and Studio displays. In some cases, the camera on my Thunderbolt display produces better picture. I'm very hopeful that the imagery coming from my phone's camera will better than what's getting included in any of these machines that have 1080 hw on them.

Battery life of MB Air is worse

Yeah it technically is, but only by a couple hours. It's not that far behind the 13in Macbook "Pro." Both laptops have absurdly phenomenal battery life, the 13 inch "Pro" is just a few hours longer.

MB Air has no touch bar

You make that sound like a bad thing lmao. No touchbar but in turn it has a fullsized keyboard with a fullsized function key row.

MB Air has thermal throttle problems

Well yeah it has no fans which is a fair reason, but to be honest if you needed fans to prevent thermal throttling for high level performance, why are you getting the 13 inch Macbook "Pro" over the more powerful 14/16 inch? Yeah the 14/16 inch cost more but are more powerful, have more features, and have a better cooling system than the 13 inch. You'd get a lot more mileage out of those laptops and those laptops are actually worth being called Pro.

the "bigger" screen of MB Air is only beside the notch and has no practical advantage. In my preferred configuration MB Air is even more expensive than MB Pro.
Here we go again...The space below the notch is the same 1080p 13 inch screen the MBAs have had before. Nothing is being taken away from having a notch, while there's added screen space to move the menu bar there so it's not cutting into your content, and allows you to have fullscreen menu bar on at all times. Plus a notch is necessary in order to have a 1080p webcam, something the 13 inch Macbook "Pro" does not have, that's still 720p despite being called pro.

It's why I have no idea what purpose the laptop serves other than Apple had so many 13 inch MBP bodies leftover so they recycled the laptop design so they'd have a new M2 laptop out ASAP. If you absolutely need the 13 inch Memebook Pro because you need a school laptop absolutely immediately...I guess sure? I'd recommend the M1 Macbook Air more because of it's price and value proposition but hey that's on you. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend bothering with the 13 inch MBP unless you're meming, or if you really really love the touchbar for some reason.
