Just wanted to update my status to anyone that cares. Today I went into the Apple Store and checked their display units to see if any of them had the new LCDs. Only one of them did and I immediately noticed a difference. Having used an Air daily for more than a year I definitely noticed the improvement. So I set up a Genius appointment to see what I could do. The guy was really nice and and understood my issue but said he couldn't do anything. He got his manager though and I talked to her about my options.

She basically said she could give me a replacement and would waive the restock fee but made it clear that she had no way of knowing if I'd get the new LCD and really didn't want to do this more than once. I totally understood and took the replacement unit in the hopes that I got lucky. I noticed the serial number was from week 20 (May '09) so I had high hopes. I took it home and sure enough it's the new 9CA5. Nice!

In closing I'm totally satisfied with the new unit and everyone at Apple was both understanding and helpful in all my analness. Guess that's why I stick with them:)

How long ago did you purchase your Macbook? Did you exchange it within the 30 day mark?

That's a great story.:)

Did they acknowledge the less than panels, even on the display models? How does it compare to the Air side by side? I may be offing my MBP if they're as described by others.

I tried to show the guy on the floor the differences and it was a tough sell, but he admitted that he doesn't have an eye for those details. However he did say he heard rumblings online about the new LCDs. Nothing official though. Which is probably why the Genius Bar guy and manager didn't know what I was talking about. They humored me though:)

I haven't put the Air and MB next to each other yet, I'll do that tonight. It is noticeable better though. Not at all cloudy like my last unit. Again I'm very pleased and happy Apple could accommodate.

I am sorry but this is nonsense. By logic, there is no way that Apple will make the MB screen as good as the MBA. By experience, there are many pictures in the computerworld article and they all show degraded quality compared to the MBA screen that we all know.

The blacks are better on the new screens, but they are NOT as good as the MBA ones.

Nonsense? Why would MBA screens logically be better - usually smaller, thinner products are both LESS FUNCTIONAL and MORE EXPENSIVE. Just as one would expect a desktop computer to provide greater performance, and a desktop display to provide greater performance for less price. The MBA takes small form factor to the EXTREME...

The MacBook is NOT a cheap piece of kit, even though it is the least expensive of the Unibody Macintoshes. The price discrepancy between a MB and MBA is minimal. By your "logic" the MBA should come with faster processor and larger capacity hard drive options...

If you've ever looked at a MBA screen and a MBu screen, the MBA wins hands down. Just because it's the norm doesn't mean it's always true.

Why would a laptop that's $600 cheaper somehow have a nicer screen than a luxury product?

This is one of the things that makes me not like Apple, in real powerful way. Not for upgrading the screens, that's a good thing. The bad part is they're doing it too late, silently and in hindsight.

I made some friends make a first time switch to Mac, a couple of them to uMB's. All of them remarked on the crappy screen, figuring 'more money - better parts'. Now, after reading about Apple 'admitting' they replaced the screens in newer models...

Wonder what "#1 customer experience"-company would say to them, should they call? 'Sorry for screwing you over, but we're Apple - we do no wrong'?

Now, raise of hands, who here thinks they'll buy Apple again?

Me, I just remember the golden days when Apple really were all about 'premium quality', and not flashy crap...

I returned my Macbook within the 14 days - and just received the new Macbook Pro 13. Cheaper and more features then the one I got before. The screen on this new baby is labeled 00009CBD.
