It makes sense that store would deplete their stock of old screens before starting with the new ones.

Where are the sources that most definitely have the new screens. Do you think they are everywhere by now? I think that the Apple online store is a pretty safe bet?

EDIT: Also, here is a link to the forum of our own macrumors users figuring out that the screen had changed :D

When I was looking for a new lappy, I loved the portability of the MacBook but the screen was horrid. I checked them out recently and not much has changed. Most will tolerate the poor quality because of their love affair with apple.

I still cannot bring myself to pay for subpar quality and struggle to believe that a premium manufacturer could release a notebook with a screen worse than a HP Mini.

Ok - I have tried capturing the screen on my brand new Macbook - recording it using my Canon Ixus 80 camera, but the result is not so good... the light plays in the screen so its hard to see how beautiful and good the new screen really is. It's the LG 9CA5 btw... I had a unibody in december which I returned because of the poorly screen, and I've seen the Pro unibody which were way better then the "old" Macbook Unibody.

But the one I got today is perfect!

Your video is good man but the only way to truly show the quality of the contrast is to pivot the screen back and forth using those dark backgrounds that you were showing. Moving the camera around doesn't do much. Could you post another video, and one without the window casting light from the background?

It certainly looks better from the vid. but would have to see it in person. The blacks on the bottom on mine never were black. Your vid looks like the bars are clearly black-black. Hopeful. Now, throw in FW and call it a 13" MBPro.;)

Wow what an honor to have my username mentioned in the front page of MacRumors :).

Yea I posted the comparison pic and that "computerworld" post was based on information from our very own MacRumors forums and that same thread you referenced so the credit goes to MacRumor Forums, thanks (he used my pic to lol)!

Anyways, like others have mentioned this may be considered a "Stealth upgrade", or simply the fact that Apple decided to switch LCD panel providers when their current stock was used up. The fact remains though that the "pool" of known LCD panel IDs in "older" unibody Macbooks and the current 'Pool/crop" of unibody Macbooks being sold are different:

"Old" Display Pool
9C89
9C8A
9C8C

"New" Display Pool
9CA5 - LG-Philips
9CA6 - Samsung
9CA7 - Chi Mei
9CA8 - AUO

Now whether the reasoning why Apple made this LCD provider change was due to customer complains on poort LCD panel quality on earlier unibody Macbooks or simply because the "new" provider gave them a better price (lol) is anybodies guess, but the fact remains that recent unibody Macbooks are being sold with 9CA_ LCD panels.

I personally feel that at least the black levels are way better on the newer 9CA5 (I dont have the A6,A7,A8 etc.) screen is better than the 9C89 I have on my other 2.0GHZ unibody Macbook I bought in November 08. Its especially noticeable when I watch movies with many "dark/black" scenes I have trouble finding the edge between the screen and the black border in the dark :).

Again, as mentioned even individual panels from the same model (9C89 LCD unit A and 9C89 LCD unit B) vary in quality due to manufacturing process so maybe my particular 9C89 unit just stinks while others who are saying they love their 9C89 got a better batch. I can only provide comparison pics of my personal 9CA5 and 9C89. However, some members have stated that the colors in the 9C89 are better than the 9CA5 (the 9C89 is on the right in all my comparison pics) so perhaps not all is lost for you "older" LCD owners? ;).

I will take more comparison pics between the 2 with viewing angles etc. if you guys want. Any suggestions on what backgrounds to use etc.? I'm in no way an expert in "color accuracy". Thanks.

^^ Vid looks like the screen is much better than the one I had. For reference, I bought one of the first MB's end of October. Here's a couple of pic's from back then with comparison of my MB vs. MBA:

Um, that's quite a difference. What's the model ID on the MBA's screen?

All the comparison pictures tell the story. Words are not needed. The old screen really blows compared to the new one. I'm just glad Apple anteed up and fixed the screen issue.

The macbook pro screen is the entire reason that I switched over to Apple in the first place. Now that I know that the Dell latitude e6500 uses the same screen, and I got one for $650, I will use that.

That said, I am thinking about getting into a macbook for a small, thin and light computer.

I feel like the macs are a great computer. But I noticed that the screen quality stunk on the macbook unibody. Anyone who says that they can't notice a difference b/w a macbook air screen and a macbook unibody screen is just plain not paying attention. They're like night and day. The macbook air screen could be the finest screen in a laptop today. To get that in the entry level macbook unibody now makes the air obsolete in my opinion. I was looking into getting an air, but now I just might get a macbook with the new screen. It changes the entire value proposition of the apple laptop for me. Hate the glossy glass, though.

You're telling me that some of you guys can't see the difference between the screens in these pictures? These are the exact differences that I saw in the apple stores between an older unibody macbook and the macbook air.

If the new unibody macbooks have the air's screens, this is such a smart move by Apple. They probably don't even cost more and it will uphold their tradition of being a premium brand.

Jesus, thats a major difference. When viewing apple stores the Air's screen does look better but not to the extent your photos show. Amazing, thanks for posting.

From straight on, the MB screen doesn't look all that bad, a little washed out, kind of milky looking compared to either the Air or MBP, but not terrible. From some angles it looks much worse than you would see in real world use. But I am glad Apple addressed this issue. I noticed it right away and canceled my MB order. I ended up getting a MBP.

Keep in mind those are the old screens.

Anyone on here have both an MBA and a new MB? :p

I know this is in the original thread as well but here's a picture of my 9CA5 in the dark:-

Even if there aren't comparison shots of new MBA/MB side by side, the MB screen still looks much better than what I had. I could never get a true black bar across both bottom and top simultaneously.

Thats great news for when I finally buy my macbook.:) Thanks
