Thanks for emphasizing this point. Technology moves fast and it may not be long before everyone upgrades to these new drives.
Heck, I'm already tempted by this deal. The x-25m is only $314 with free shipping and no taxes.

And its this that people have the most difficulty comprehending. A lot of people here that don't seem to understand the dilemma just don't have a shred of thought about tomorrow, knowing full well that technology evolves.

Well said

Even if they don't fix it I'm probably going to buy one anyways because I desperately need a new computer and I really want the 13" unibody.

Now I'm just going to wait for someone to call me out because I said earlier that I'd stick with PC.

If/when they do fix the SATA with an update; great. If they don't, I'll just buy the next gen when USB 3.0 comes out and sell this one.

Heh, thanks. Yea, I wish people could realize that yes, SSDs will actually BE important soon.

Actually, thats the same route I'm taking too. I'll just sell this model and get the new MBP with SATA II 3.0 if they don't end up fixing this model. I'd also love USB 3.0 myself

im running 3gb, mbp 2.8ghz bought back in october. im surprised how much apple has fiddled about with this range of laptops in such a small period of time, particularly the amount of cost cutting measures they have decided to take.

About 2 or 3 weeks ago New Egg had them advertised for $284 with free shipping. I picked one up in anticipation of upgrading a mac unibody - of course the Macbook Pro 13 was released so I held off.

I posted my benchmarks in an earlier post. They were almost half of what I expected based on how the drive performed in a machine with a SATA II.

Heck, I'm already tempted by this deal. The x-25m is only $314 with free shipping and no taxes.

That's not a deal, it's basically the same price everywhere else. :p

I bet you there will be a price cut by the end of July - probably another $50-$60, so just be patient.

The SATA was downgraded from the II standard (3.0 Gb/s) to the old standard I (1.5 Gb/s). Previous generation White Macbooks have SATA II 3.0 Gb/s. The 17" macbook pro (new generation) has SATA II. Therefore, the 13" and 15" (which have SATA I) where specifically limited and downgraded.

They didn't chose to limit the SATA bus. Nobody knows why it's limited or if there's a fix.

The OCZ drives might not be able to handle it, but the Intel X-25Ms sure as hell can.

I mean... This has no relevance at all.

Oh, and P.S.

My Intel X-25 read speads have been almost cut in half from my 13" unibody mac (SATA II) to the MBP 13" (SATA I).

Intel X-25 is one of the fastest (read not write) and reliable drives on the market today.

Thanks for making the room a little warmer....

It's the exact same chipset as before. We know it's being limited, but we don't know why. You're making it sound like Apple intentionally did this.

I understand reading comprehension might not be your thing, but you need to stop before you make yourself look any more foolish.

Questions?

So did we take a step closer to finding something out with this article?

1:Not a hardware issue but software issue
2:Snow leapord won't fix
3:Thus one can assume...

The article leads me to believe that they've known about it since soon after the first unibodies were released and were just unable to get the fix out in time for the June release.

Did we ever get confirmation that 1.5 Sata interfaces were being used on the new 13/15 MBP's or is it still a 3.0 interface that's just being limited by it's firmware?

Pretty safe to assume that the more press that finds its way back to Apple the more pressure they will have to make an official statement. Front page of MacRumors is deserves, it would be nice if Engadget also would picked it up.

If it sounds like I don't know what I'm saying it's because I don't, but I've got a 13" MBP that's still sitting in it's box that I would like to open one of these days knowing that I will be able to drop a SSD a year or two from now.

I just stumbled across this. Sheds some interesting light into why they chose to limit the SATA Bus Speed with the new Pro's.

this thread is failing.
come on someone bust out 20 grand and tear apart a 17 in., 15 in. and 13 in. and just concoct something terminatorish.

i mean come on, i need some pics here, at least of people getting pissed off :D, so sick of reading this ranting nonsense.

and lets not let this thread just start being a flaming hole.

EDIT: Wow, minimenber posted right before me, my wishes came true, pics of something.

Apple's going to lay low and just hope this whole thing blows over. Everyone's going to get stuck with the 1.5 sata bus, unfortunately.

In other news, my new 17" is coming in this week. 5 bucks says it has the SATA 300 interface. I look forward to adding an awesome X-25 SSD in a few months and enjoying its full potential :D

On a serious note, I'm really curious as to why this affects the 13" and 15" only...Apple did drop the 17" price significantly as well, yet the SATA bus remains uncrippled. Hm..

Yes, your SATA will be 3.0Gb. The 17" is what is was when it was released back in june '08 (except for the screen?). Apple only had to tinker with the 13" and 15" Leopard versions to support the new configuration. And sometimes tinkering can domino.
As I see it this bug can't be related to price - the hardware differences between the new uMBP 13" and the old uMB 13" have no connection to the SATA controller.

Anyways - I wrote Phil Schiller and got a reply same day - with the same answer as everyone else: They're investigating the matter and we should "stay tuned".

Enjoy your 17"+SSD. Full speed ahead! :)

Take a moment and tell Apple to fix the gimped MPBs here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html

I've done both, the feedback was posted a few days ago with no reply until now, and the mail to P. Schiller was sent some minutes ago.

Actually I want to buy a 13" MacBook, but not with a limited sata speed.
That's what I've told Apple in both messages.
Surely, 1300 € left bucks because one customer won't buy a MacBookPro under that circumstances dont' execute some pressure, but if everybody who is disappointed does that....

I can only encourage everybody to do those two steps. It costs some minutes of time, but hopefully it's worth it.

So lets recap so far after.. 1,544 posts and 145K views..

All 13" & 15" MBPs are 1.5 SATA
Only the 17"s are 3.0 SATA

And  are saying watch this space for an update to their "investigations"

Anything else?

When the iPhone 3G had the issue with the yellow tinted screens, Apple said "Stay tuned we are investigating the issue" and did nothing about it...

When the first generation MacBook Air's had the issues with the hinges breaking, Apple said "Stay tuned we are investigating the issue" and did nothing about it...

When the second and third generation MacBook Air's had the issues with the display lines, Apple said "Stay tuned we are investigating the issue" and did nothing about it...

And now with the MBP 13" and 15" SATA 1.5 Gbps issue, Apple is saying "Stay tuned we are investigating the issue"....

You do the math... I hope I am wrong...

Iphone screen and Macbook Air hinge and screen are all hardware flaw. To fix that Apple have to recall all the hardware and those issues are not block the usage. If the hinge is broken , apple will fix it for sure.
This SATA we talking here is 90% a firmware issue as the hardware is the same as before. Apple only add a damn SD slot and FW port(I hope they didn't) which unlikely will break the SATA since they are nothing to do with SATA.

So let's push apple harder and make sure they release the new firmware!Or least tell us this can or can't be fixed.

I just wonder what can be done to further this... Surely by now they must have hundreds if not thousands of inquiries and the amount of disclosed info remains the same.
Maybe some of the previous posters are right and we will never see a reply from Apple about this problem.

Yes, everyone should follow applefixsatambp at http://twitter.com/applefixsatambp. This is a more publicly visible petition than sending feedback to Apple, but by all means please do both.
