the reason apple did not use the i3 is because they would be limited to intel integrated graphics. And people would have complained about that too. Apple should have just used the i5 with integrated graphics, now they are stuck looking for discrete graphics in the future updates as intel will continue to integrate the chipset in the processor.

No they are not going to, intel had claimed that they would release igfx free cpus, and they didn't, and now they are claiming they will in the future. As soon as the anti competitiveness authorities order them to, they ll have an extra incentive, and they are on their case big time.

In other news: "Dell has launched its upgraded version of Studio 15 series laptop which is powered by new 2010 Intel Core i3-330M processor and it features 15.6 inch WXGA Widescreen display powered by ATI Mobility Radeon HD discrete graphics hardware."

Well, at least the waiting is over. These forums were driving me crazy and I didn't get a wink of sleep Monday nights for the past month!
I told myself unless the new 13" MBP GPU provided a 4x increase over the 9400M I wouldn't upgrade. The 330M on the 15" does just that, and I was hoping to see it in the 13" as well.
At least those of us with the mid 2009 models can be happy with what we have. But does anyone know how we can get our hands on the recovery DVD that comes with the new 13" models? I'd love to get a copy, assuming there'll be Mac OS X 10.6.3 v1.1 preinstalled, as well as an updated and integrated Boot Camp installer (V3.1+ or 3.2)? Can we order a recovery disc from Apple support even if we didn't purchase the accompanying model? Of course I'd be more than willing to pay a fee for it.

Edit: OK, I just noted that the current Snow Leopard disc available at the Apple Store is Version 10.6.3 Guess I could just order one of those...

What is this suppose to mean? I just bought a new laptop last September, see signature. I am not even worried about the update, other than its interesting. Also this thread is clearly about 13" models not 15" and not Dells.

If your point was Dell has an i3 and a discrete video card, that is irrelevant, because Apple clearly cannot put a discrete video card in their 13" macbook pros or otherwise they would have by now. And therefore they would be limited to integrated graphics. This would mean either using intel graphics with the i3, i5, and i7(like the 15" and 17") or staying with the core 2 duos like they did on the 13"

In other news: "ASUS has today announced a new notebook that is available on Newegg and other online sellers for under $900. The machine is called the ASUS U30Jc and sports a 13.3-inch screen. The machine has NVIDIA Optimus tech inside and uses an Intel Core i3-350M processor.

Graphics include an NVIDIA discrete GPU matched with Intel integrated GPU that change depending on the user workload and needs of the machine at the time. The NVIDIA discrete GPU is the GeForce GT310M. "

You really do not see the relevance?

Apple is already doing this with the 15" and 17" models, but they do not want to put discrete graphics in the 13". So no, it is not relevant.
Optimus uses both integrated and DISCRETE graphics, meaning you need both.

Apple elected to offer a great igfx by invidia and take the 10% hit of the c2ds against the i series. Wise choice.

Is the update lackluster? Depends on your perspective. The iCore processors have a limited increase in performance over the Core 2 Duo's. Given the issues with incorporating the relatively new (released January) mobile iCore processors, I think it is understandable that the lower end MacBooks Pro wouldn't get the upgrade. Keep in mind, the processing speed of the entry and upgrade 13" has been bumped up. I could have gotten a $1500 13" MacBook Pro with a 2.5Ghz processor last week. Now I can have essentially the same spec laptop (okay 2.4 Ghz) for $1100. But, it now has a GPU with close to twice the performance, which would more than make up for the 4% slower processor. I was ready to pull the trigger before, I'm happy it just got better and less expensive.

The 13" is and always has been a trade off of performance and portability. Arguably all laptops are. Portability suffers when trying to cram in more power, hence 17 and 19" laptops, which are a lot less portable.
