When compared to the macbook air 13" for 2012. There is absolutely no reason to buy the 13" MBP over the MBA. Resolution is worse, HDD speed is worse, portability is worse, ram upgrades won't be utilized due to the max 1280x800 resolution.

Why would you upgrade a 13" MBP if you wouldn't see any of the benefits from the upgrade? The only thing worth upgrading would be the HDD to a SSD and by the time you factor in the cost of an SSD you would still have been better off buying the higher end 13" MBA.

Apparently you're smarter than Apple and those of us who value:

  • user upgradeable RAM
  • user upgradeable HD
  • optical drive swappable for second drive
  • Firewire port
and if you can't tote a <6 pound laptop, I feel for ya

Why would Apple want to "phase out" one of their best-sellers?

Obviously the original poster has no idea about how businesses are run -- to produce items that sell well and generate profits....

Do you realize that the MacBook White used to be Apple's best selling, and they had no problem whatsoever phasing it out? Same thing for the iPod Classic, same with the old P4, etc.

If Apple feels that the MBP 13" has reached its plateau (and I believe it did with the 2011 refresh), they'll have no problem in phasing it out no matter how well it sells. Again, look at what happened to the Macbook White 3 years ago.

The point is, the 13" Macbook Pro is still a very powerful machine. It is more powerful than the 13" Air... In fact, in a couple years when i upgrade from 4GB to 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD it will be significantly faster than the Macbook Air. AND... I'll be able to remove the disk drive and put in another SSD. And it will still only be a pound heavier than the almighty air.

What if the apps that i'm running are CPU bound rather than storage bound? If that's the case then I'm giving up performance with the ULV slower versions if Intel Processors.

I'm also giving up the ability to easily upgrade to larger SSD drives and RAM.

If your apps are CPU bound, then you shouldn't be considering dual core mobile CPU equipped laptops in the first place.

True but all things being considered I see the MBP and the MBA sticking around. Next year with Haswell Apple will be able to differentiate the two better.

MBP- discrete GPU and Quad Core
MBA - Integrated GPU and Dual Core ULV procs.
